Chapter 2 - The Man Behind The Door

The diner door opened slowly.
Lily stopped breathing.
Daniel Whitmore turned toward the entrance and saw a tall man standing beneath the flickering yellow light above the doorway.
He was wearing a dark jacket covered with melting snow.
His eyes moved across the room quickly.
Searching.
Looking for someone.
And then they stopped on Lily.
The little girl's hand immediately grabbed Daniel's sleeve.
"Please don't let him see me."
Daniel looked down at her.
The fear in her eyes was different from a child being afraid of a stranger.
It was the fear of someone who already knew what that person was capable of doing.
Daniel slowly moved between Lily and the entrance.
"Who is he?"
Lily didn't answer.
The man stepped inside.
The bell above the door rang.
Everyone in the diner looked over for a moment before returning to their conversations.
But Daniel kept watching.
The man didn't look like someone searching for a table.
He looked like someone searching for a person.
The waitress, Karen, suddenly became nervous.
Her hand stopped moving.
She looked at the man.
Then at Lily.
Then quickly looked away.
Daniel noticed.
That was when he knew this wasn't just about a hungry child.
Something was wrong.
The man walked closer.
"Lily."
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
The little girl moved closer to Daniel.
The millionaire looked down at her.
"You know him?"
Lily whispered.
"He came to the hospital."
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
"What did he do?"
Lily looked toward the floor.
"He told my mom she couldn't tell anyone."
"Tell anyone what?"
The little girl opened her mouth.
But before she could answer, the man reached their table.
"There you are."
Daniel stood.
"Can I help you?"
The man looked at Daniel.
His expression changed slightly.
A stranger standing between him and Lily was not something he expected.
"I'm here for the girl."
Daniel didn't move.
"Who are you?"
The man smiled faintly.
"Someone who knows her family."
Lily shook her head.
"No."
Everyone nearby noticed.
The little girl had finally spoken louder.
"No, you're not."
The man's smile disappeared.
Daniel saw it.
A small reaction.
A flash of anger.
Then it was gone.
"You should come with me, Lily."
The girl held onto Daniel's sleeve tighter.
"I don't want to."
The diner became silent.
Karen stepped forward.
"Maybe we should call someone."
The man looked at her.
"Karen."
The waitress froze.
"You don't want to do that."
Daniel looked between them.
He knew immediately.
Karen knew this man.
And she was afraid of him.
Daniel reached into his pocket and quietly pulled out his phone.
The man noticed.
"You don't know what you're getting involved in."
Daniel looked at him.
"I hear that a lot."
The man leaned closer.
"You think money fixes everything?"
Daniel's face remained calm.
"No."
He glanced at Lily.
"But sometimes it helps protect people who have no one."
The man's jaw tightened.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then Lily whispered:
"My mom didn't disappear."
Daniel looked down.
"What?"
The girl looked terrified.
"My mom didn't leave me."
The man suddenly stepped forward.
"Lily."
Daniel raised his hand.
"Stay where you are."
The man stopped.
But his eyes stayed on the girl.
Daniel sat back down beside Lily.
"Tell me what happened."
Lily looked around the diner.
She was scared someone else might hear.
"My mom found something."
"What?"
"A paper."
Daniel waited.
"What kind of paper?"
Lily's fingers played with the edge of her coat.
"She said it proved someone was lying."
The millionaire felt a cold feeling move through him.
"What happened after she found it?"
Lily looked toward the hospital parking lot outside.
"That night, someone came to our apartment."
Her voice became smaller.
"My mom told me to hide."
Daniel leaned closer.
"Where?"
"Inside the closet."
"And then?"
Lily wiped her eyes.
"I heard them arguing."
"Who?"
The little girl shook her head.
"I don't know."
A pause.
"Then I heard my mom scream."
Daniel's expression changed.
"And when you came out?"
Lily looked at him.
"She was gone."
The diner stayed silent.
Even the people in the background had stopped pretending not to listen.
Daniel looked at the man standing across from him.
"You were there."
The man's face hardened.
"I think you've misunderstood."
"No."
Daniel stood.
"I think you've explained nothing."
The man looked toward Karen.
"Tell him."
Karen looked uncomfortable.
"Tell me what?"
The waitress looked down.
"I..."
She couldn't finish.
The man interrupted.
"This girl is not your responsibility."
Daniel turned.
"Maybe not."
He looked back at Lily.
"But right now, she's sitting here scared of you."
The man stepped closer.
"You have no idea what you're protecting."
Daniel's phone suddenly vibrated.
He looked down.
A message had appeared from an unknown number.
One sentence.
"Don't trust the girl."
Daniel stared at the screen.
His eyes narrowed.
Because beneath the message was a photo.
A photo of Lily.
Taken inside the diner.
Taken only seconds ago.
Daniel slowly lifted his eyes.
The man in front of him was not holding a phone.
Karen was behind the counter.
The customers were sitting too far away.
Then who had taken it?
Daniel looked around the room.
The little girl noticed his expression.
"Mr. Whitmore?"
He didn't answer.
Because another message appeared.
This time, it contained only four words.
"She's not who you think."
Daniel looked back at Lily.
The little girl was still holding his sleeve.
Still terrified.
But now he saw something else.
A small silver necklace around her neck.
A necklace with a symbol he had seen before.
A symbol connected to the company he had spent ten years building.
Daniel reached toward the necklace.
And then the little girl whispered:
"My mother told me never to show this to anyone..."
The necklace opened.
May you like
Inside was a tiny photograph.
And on the back was a name Daniel never expected to see again.
