Chapter 3 - The Name Hidden Inside The Necklace

The photograph inside the necklace was smaller than Daniel expected.

But the name written on the back felt heavier than anything he had ever held.

He stared at the handwriting.

His face slowly lost its confidence.

Because he knew that handwriting.

He had seen it years ago.

On contracts.

On personal letters.

On the documents that changed his entire life.

The name written beneath the faded photograph was:

"Emily Whitmore."

Daniel stopped breathing for a moment.

Lily watched his reaction carefully.

"Do you know her?"

Daniel looked at the little girl.

His voice became quieter.

"Where did you get this?"

Lily touched the necklace.

"My mom gave it to me."

"Your mother's name is Emily?"

The girl shook her head.

"No."

Daniel looked confused.

"Then who is Emily?"

Lily didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she looked toward the diner door.

The man who had come searching for her was still standing there.

Watching.

Waiting.

Daniel closed the necklace.

He knew one thing.

Whatever was happening was much bigger than a missing child.

He turned toward the man.

"Leave."

The man smiled.

"You really think you can tell me what to do?"

Daniel stepped closer.

"I don't know who you are."

A pause.

"But I know you are afraid of what's inside that necklace."

The man's expression changed.

Only for a second.

But Daniel saw it.

Fear.

Real fear.

The man looked at Lily.

"You don't understand what your mother started."

Lily's eyes filled with confusion.

"My mom didn't do anything wrong."

The man looked away.

"That's what everyone thought."

Daniel's phone remained in his hand.

The photo message was still there.

Someone had been watching.

Someone knew Lily was in the diner.

Someone knew Daniel was involved.

He needed answers.

But first, he needed to get Lily somewhere safe.

"Come with me."

Lily looked up.

"Where?"

"Somewhere this man can't reach you."

The man laughed quietly.

"You think your house is safer?"

Daniel stopped.

The words bothered him.

Because the man said it with certainty.

Not a threat.

A fact.

Daniel turned back.

"What do you know about me?"

The man smiled.

"More than you know about yourself."

Before Daniel could respond, Karen suddenly dropped a coffee cup behind the counter.

The sound made everyone look over.

She was shaking.

Daniel noticed.

"Karen."

The waitress avoided his eyes.

"What?"

"You know something."

"No."

"You're lying."

Karen looked at Lily.

Then at the man.

Her face showed regret.

"I shouldn't have let her come here."

Daniel looked surprised.

"Why?"

Karen swallowed.

"Because this was the place her mother told her to go."

The room became silent.

Lily looked at her.

"My mom told me Dell's Diner was safe."

Daniel slowly turned toward the waitress.

"When?"

Karen looked down.

"Three weeks ago."

Daniel frowned.

"Three weeks?"

Lily nodded.

"She told me if anything happened, I should wait here."

Daniel felt his stomach tighten.

"Wait for who?"

Lily looked at him.

"For you."

The words hit harder than expected.

Daniel stared at the child.

"Me?"

Lily nodded.

"She said a man named Daniel would come."

Nobody spoke.

The man near the door suddenly moved.

Daniel noticed.

"Don't."

The man stopped.

But his eyes were cold now.

"You have no idea what she left you."

Daniel looked at Lily.

"What did your mother know about me?"

The girl reached inside her coat.

Her fingers touched something hidden in the fabric.

A small envelope.

Daniel hadn't noticed it before.

Lily pulled it out slowly.

"My mom said I could only give this to you if you knew the necklace."

Daniel took the envelope.

His name was written on the front.

Not printed.

Handwritten.

Daniel Whitmore.

His heart raced.

Because the handwriting was the same.

Emily's handwriting.

The woman he had buried eight years ago.

His younger sister.

The woman everyone told him had died in a car accident.

Daniel opened the envelope carefully.

Inside was one piece of paper.

Only a few lines.

Daniel,

If Lily found you, it means they failed to stop her.

Do not trust anyone who says Emily was the problem.

The truth was hidden because I discovered what they were doing with your company.

Protect Lily.

She is the only person who can prove what happened.

Daniel read the words twice.

Then again.

His hands tightened around the paper.

His company.

The company he built.

The company everyone thought he controlled.

Someone had used it for something.

Something Emily had discovered.

Daniel looked at Lily.

"Your mother..."

He couldn't finish.

Lily whispered:

"She told me my real name wasn't Lily Carter."

Daniel froze.

"What?"

The little girl looked afraid.

"She said if anyone asked, I should say I was Lily."

Daniel slowly lowered the paper.

"Then what is your real name?"

The little girl opened her mouth.

Before she could answer, the lights inside the diner flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then the entire diner went dark.

People gasped.

Chairs moved.

Someone screamed near the entrance.

Daniel immediately reached for Lily.

"Stay close."

The darkness lasted only a few seconds.

Then emergency lights turned on.

Red light filled the diner.

The man near the door was gone.

Daniel looked around.

The front door was still closed.

No one had seen him leave.

Karen was standing behind the counter.

But she wasn't looking at Daniel.

She was looking at the empty seat where Lily had been sitting.

Daniel turned.

"Lily?"

The chair was empty.

His heart dropped.

"Lily!"

Then he heard a small sound.

A whisper.

Behind him.

"Mr. Whitmore..."

Daniel turned quickly.

Lily was standing near the back hallway.

But she wasn't alone.

An older woman was holding her hand.

The woman looked terrified.

Not dangerous.

Afraid.

Daniel stepped forward.

"Who are you?"

The woman looked at him.

Her eyes filled with tears.

Then she said something that made Daniel stop.

"I've been trying to find Lily before they do."

Daniel looked at Lily.

Then back at the woman.

"Who are you?"

The woman slowly removed her coat.

Underneath was an old hospital identification badge.

Daniel stared at it.

Because the name on the badge was one he had spent eight years believing was impossible.

The woman whispered:

May you like

"My name is Emily Whitmore..."

And Daniel realized the woman he buried was standing in front of him.
