Chapter 6 - The Daughter Who Was Never Supposed To Know

The name appeared on the screen.

My mother.

For several seconds, I couldn’t move.

I stared at the document.

The signature.

The altered records.

The evidence that my entire identity had been changed before I was old enough to understand what was happening.

My mother had done it.

The woman who raised me.

The woman who held me when I cried.

The woman who told me my father was gone.

She had been hiding something from me my entire life.

Daniel looked at me.

"Emily..."

I turned toward him.

"How long?"

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

I felt something break inside.

Not anger.

Not sadness.

Something worse.

The feeling of realizing that everyone you trusted knew a version of the truth that you were never allowed to see.

The police officer closed the document.

"We need to secure all of this."

Sarah nodded.

"I agree."

Victoria suddenly moved.

"None of you understand what you’re looking at."

The officer looked at her.

"Then explain."

Victoria laughed quietly.

"You think this is about Emily?"

She looked at me.

"You still think you’re the victim."

I stared at her.

"Then tell me what I am."

She didn’t answer immediately.

And that scared me.

Because Victoria was not the type of person who stayed silent unless the truth was dangerous.

"You were never supposed to find your father’s files."

The officer stepped closer.

"Why?"

Victoria looked at Daniel.

Then at Sarah.

Then back at me.

"Because your father didn’t leave those files for you."

I felt my chest tighten.

"What?"

"He left them because he knew someone would eventually come looking."

"Who?"

Victoria’s expression changed.

"People who wanted what he discovered."

I looked at the laptop.

The documents.

The recordings.

The years of secrets.

My father had known.

He had known someone would continue the fight after he was gone.

But why me?

Why hide everything from me?

The officer asked:

"Mrs. Carter, why were Emily’s birth records changed?"

Victoria looked away.

"I don’t know."

Nobody believed her.

Not even Daniel.

Because he finally understood something.

His mother wasn’t protecting him anymore.

She was protecting herself.

I opened the birth record file again.

The document showed my original name.

My original information.

But one section had been deleted.

A section marked:

"Biological Parent Information."

My hand moved toward the screen.

"Why was this removed?"

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel whispered:

"Because they didn’t want you to know."

I looked at him.

"Know what?"

Daniel looked like he wanted to disappear.

"Emily..."

"Say it."

He closed his eyes.

"Your father wasn't your biological father."

The room became silent.

I felt like the air disappeared.

I laughed once.

A quiet, empty sound.

"That’s impossible."

Daniel shook his head.

"I thought so too."

I looked at him.

"You knew?"

"I found out when I helped your father."

The words hurt.

Because once again, he knew.

Everyone knew.

Except me.

"Who is my biological father?"

Daniel looked at Victoria.

And Victoria’s face changed.

That was the answer.

The officer noticed.

"Mrs. Carter."

Victoria said nothing.

The officer repeated:

"Who is Emily’s biological father?"

Victoria finally spoke.

But her voice was different.

No arrogance.

No control.

Just fear.

"Someone who should have never known she existed."

My heart stopped.

"Why?"

Victoria looked at me.

"Because if he knew you survived, he would come for you."

Nobody moved.

Sarah stepped closer.

"Survived?"

Victoria immediately regretted the word.

But it was too late.

I heard it.

Everyone heard it.

"What do you mean survived?"

Victoria looked down.

"I shouldn't have said that."

I stepped toward her.

"No."

My voice became colder.

"You don’t get to stop now."

The officer stood beside me.

"Answer her."

Victoria looked at the floor.

"When you were born, there was an attempt to erase you."

The room felt smaller.

"Someone wanted your existence hidden."

"Who?"

She looked at Daniel.

Then at me.

"Your biological father."

I stared at her.

That made no sense.

"Why would my own father want me gone?"

Victoria didn't answer.

Because she knew.

And she knew I would hate the answer.

The hidden laptop suddenly made a notification sound.

Everyone turned.

A new file appeared.

No one had touched it.

The folder name was:

"FOR EMILY - FINAL MESSAGE."

Sarah whispered:

"That wasn't there before."

I clicked it.

The video opened.

My father appeared again.

But this time, he looked different.

More serious.

More afraid.

"Emily."

He took a deep breath.

"If you are watching this, then they finally told you about your birth."

I froze.

He knew.

He knew I would find this.

"I’m sorry."

Those two words almost destroyed me.

"Your mother wanted to protect you."

I looked at the screen.

"She changed your records because someone was trying to find you."

My father's voice shook.

"But she made one mistake."

The video paused briefly.

Then continued.

"She trusted the wrong person."

Everyone looked at Victoria.

But my father’s next words made me turn toward Daniel.

"The person closest to Emily was the person who almost destroyed everything."

Daniel went pale.

"No..."

I stared at him.

My father continued.

"Daniel, if Emily is watching this, then you failed the promise you made me."

Nobody spoke.

The officer looked at Daniel.

"You made a promise to her father?"

Daniel sat down.

His hands were shaking.

"Yes."

I looked at him.

"What promise?"

He looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw real regret.

"I promised I would protect you."

I shook my head.

"Then why did you hurt me?"

He had no answer.

The video continued.

"Emily, I need you to understand something."

My father looked directly at the camera.

"The people around you are not all enemies."

A pause.

"But one of them has been lying since the beginning."

The screen went black.

A final line appeared.

"Find the person who changed your birth records."

The file ended.

Nobody moved.

Then Sarah suddenly looked at the document again.

"Wait."

Everyone turned.

She pointed at the altered birth record.

"Emily."

I walked closer.

"What?"

Sarah zoomed in.

"There is a second signature."

I looked at the screen.

The first signature was my mother’s.

But underneath it...

There was another name.

A name hidden beneath a blacked-out section.

The officer enhanced the image.

The letters slowly became visible.

My hands went cold.

Because the second person who changed my identity was not Daniel.

Not Victoria.

Not even my mother.

It was someone I had spent my entire career trusting.

The officer whispered the name.

May you like

And the room went silent.

Because the person who erased my past was... my commanding officer.
