Chapter 2 - The Folder He Never Wanted Me To Find

The laptop screen showed one word.

BLACKMAIL.

I stared at it for several seconds, refusing to believe what I was seeing.

Daniel stood behind me.

For the first time since the police arrived, he wasn’t angry.

He wasn’t confident.

He wasn’t pretending to be the victim.

He looked terrified.

"Emily, close that."

His voice was quiet.

Almost desperate.

That scared me more than his shouting ever had.

Because Daniel never begged.

Not when he insulted me.

Not when he threatened me.

Not when he threw that mug at me.

But now, standing in front of a police officer with his own lies collapsing around him, he was suddenly afraid.

The lead officer looked at him.

"Why?"

Daniel opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

I slowly clicked the folder.

Inside were dozens of files.

Photos.

Documents.

Audio recordings.

Messages.

Dates.

Names.

My heart started beating faster.

Not because I was afraid.

Because I realized Daniel had been hiding something much bigger than money.

The officer looked at me.

"Do you know what this folder is?"

I shook my head.

"No."

Daniel stepped forward.

"She doesn’t need to see that."

The officer immediately raised his hand.

"Stay where you are."

Daniel stopped.

And for the first time in five years of marriage, I saw him lose control.

Not anger.

Fear.

I looked at the screen again.

The first file was labeled:

"Emily Carter - Background Information."

My blood ran cold.

I opened it.

The document contained details about me.

My military career.

My assignments.

My family.

My personal history.

Things Daniel should have never collected.

Things no husband should have been secretly tracking.

The next file was worse.

"Pressure Points."

I clicked.

There were notes.

Private notes.

About my weaknesses.

My responsibilities.

The moments when I would be most vulnerable.

One line caught my attention.

"She protects her reputation. Use that against her."

I felt something inside me change.

For years, I thought Daniel was simply selfish.

I thought he was immature.

I thought he was a man who wanted control.

But this wasn’t just control.

This was planning.

The officer looked at me carefully.

"Colonel, when did you first notice something unusual?"

I closed the folder.

"Not until recently."

That wasn’t completely true.

Because deep down, I had noticed.

The unexplained questions.

The strange phone calls.

The way Daniel always wanted to know where I was.

Who I was meeting.

What projects I was working on.

I had convinced myself it was jealousy.

I had called it insecurity.

I never imagined it was preparation.

The second officer walked toward the front door.

"I’m going to secure the scene."

Daniel immediately reacted.

"No, wait."

Everyone looked at him.

He realized his mistake.

His voice became softer.

"I mean... there’s no reason to make this bigger than it is."

The lead officer stared at him.

"You threw boiling liquid at your wife during a classified work meeting."

Daniel looked away.

"I was angry."

"Anger doesn’t explain hidden files about your wife."

Silence filled the room.

Daniel looked at me.

And for a moment, I saw the man I married.

The man who used to hold my hand.

The man who promised he would always protect me.

Then I remembered the same man standing in my office.

The same man who watched tea burn my skin.

The same man who called the police because he believed I would be blamed.

"Emily," he whispered.

I looked at him.

"What?"

His eyes moved toward the officers.

Then back to me.

"You don’t understand what you found."

I almost smiled.

"That’s the first honest thing you’ve said today."

His face tightened.

"You think this is about me?"

I said nothing.

Because suddenly, I wasn’t sure.

I opened another file.

Inside was a recording.

The date was six months earlier.

I pressed play.

Daniel’s voice came through the speakers.

"She won’t suspect anything. She trusts me."

I froze.

The recording continued.

Another voice answered.

A woman.

Older.

Familiar.

"Good. Keep pushing her. Once she signs the documents, everything belongs to us."

My fingers went cold.

I looked at Daniel.

He looked away.

The officer noticed.

"Who is that woman?"

Daniel didn’t answer.

The recording continued.

"You said the military position makes her valuable."

Daniel’s voice responded.

"She has access. She has connections. She has everything we need."

My stomach turned.

This was no longer about a vacation.

It was never about a vacation.

The officer stopped the recording.

"Colonel Carter, do you recognize the woman’s voice?"

I stared at the screen.

I listened again.

And slowly, a name came to my mind.

A name I never wanted to believe.

"Yes."

The officer waited.

I looked at Daniel.

"My mother-in-law."

The room went completely silent.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Like he knew the truth was finally out.

The woman who had spent years calling me "family" had been part of this.

The woman who always hugged me in public.

The woman who cried when I deployed.

The woman who constantly reminded me how lucky Daniel was to have me.

She had been recording me.

Watching me.

Waiting for something.

I opened another file.

This one contained bank records.

Large transfers.

Money moving between accounts.

My name appeared.

But I had never approved any of them.

I looked at Daniel.

"What did you do?"

He didn’t answer.

"Daniel."

His jaw tightened.

"I was trying to fix things."

"By stealing from me?"

"No."

His voice rose.

"By protecting us."

The officer stepped closer.

"Protecting who?"

Daniel stayed silent.

That silence told me everything.

The money wasn’t for his mother’s vacation.

The vacation was a distraction.

A reason to force me into a fight.

A reason to make me look unstable.

A reason to create a scene.

I looked at the mug on the floor.

The broken pieces were still there.

And suddenly I understood.

The tea wasn’t an accident.

It was supposed to be the moment everything changed.

Daniel thought he had created evidence against me.

But he had created evidence against himself.

The officers continued searching through the files.

Then one of them stopped.

"Officer?"

The lead officer walked over.

"What did you find?"

The second officer pointed at the screen.

"There’s a hidden folder inside the blackmail folder."

I moved closer.

A folder appeared.

No name.

No date.

Only a number.

"07."

The officer clicked it.

The screen went black.

For a few seconds, nothing happened.

Then a video appeared.

A security camera recording.

The timestamp was from three weeks earlier.

The room shown on the screen was my office.

My private military office.

But I wasn’t alone.

Someone had been inside.

Someone who was never supposed to be there.

The camera angle shifted.

A person walked toward my desk.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Then the person turned toward the camera.

And the face appeared.

The officer whispered one name.

"Impossible..."

I looked at the screen.

Because the person in the video was someone I trusted completely.

Someone who had helped me for years.

Someone who should never have betrayed me.

The video paused.

Then a message appeared underneath.

"Ask your husband why he hired me."

I turned toward Daniel.

But he was already looking at the door.

May you like

Because someone was standing outside.

And they were not alone.
