Chapter 5 - The Message From My Father

The hidden laptop opened.

The file appeared.

PLAY THIS BEFORE THEY FIND YOU.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

For a moment, I forgot about Daniel.

I forgot about Victoria.

I forgot about the police officers standing around me.

Because the words on that screen were impossible.

My father had been dead for seven years.

At least, that was what I had been told.

I was twenty-five when the accident happened.

A military vehicle crash.

A closed investigation.

A funeral with a flag-covered coffin.

A lifetime of believing I would never hear his voice again.

I remembered standing beside my mother, holding her hand while everyone told me to be strong.

I remembered Daniel being there.

Before we were married.

Before everything changed.

He had held me while I cried.

He had told me my father would always be proud of me.

Now I was staring at a file that suggested the biggest loss of my life was built on a lie.

The officer looked at me.

"Colonel Carter, do you want to open it?"

I couldn’t answer immediately.

Sarah stepped closer.

"Emily..."

I looked at her.

"How long have you known about this?"

She shook her head.

"I didn’t know what was inside."

"Then why did you hide it?"

Her eyes became emotional.

"Because I was afraid someone would find it before you did."

I looked back at the screen.

The file had been created three months after my father’s supposed death.

Three months.

Someone had been waiting.

Planning.

Preparing.

The officer carefully moved the laptop onto the table.

"Let’s watch it."

I pressed play.

The screen went black.

Then a video appeared.

The quality was old.

The room was unfamiliar.

A man sat in front of the camera.

For three seconds, I couldn’t breathe.

Because I knew that face.

Older.

Tired.

Different.

But alive.

My hand covered my mouth.

"Dad..."

Nobody spoke.

My father looked directly into the camera.

And then he said my name.

"Emily."

My knees almost gave out.

His voice.

The same voice that used to wake me up before school.

The same voice that taught me how to stand tall.

The same voice I thought I would never hear again.

"If you’re watching this, then they failed to stop you from finding the truth."

The room became colder.

My father continued.

"I don’t know who will show you this message. I don’t know how much they have already taken from you."

He paused.

"But if you found this file, it means they are closer than I thought."

I looked at Daniel.

He looked pale.

Not confused.

Afraid.

My father continued.

"Emily, the accident seven years ago was not an accident."

The words hit me harder than anything before.

The officer looked at me.

Sarah covered her mouth.

Victoria slowly stepped backward.

My father continued.

"I discovered financial crimes connected to people inside a private military network."

I stared at the screen.

"People who used their influence to hide information, manipulate contracts, and control valuable assets."

My breathing became heavier.

"Before I could expose them, they came after me."

The video shook slightly.

Like he had recorded it in a hurry.

"Emily, if they tell you I died because of a mistake, don’t believe them."

I felt tears forming.

Not because I was weak.

Because everything I believed was breaking apart.

"I needed you to stay safe."

My father looked directly into the camera.

"And the only person I trusted to protect you..."

He stopped.

For a moment, he looked uncertain.

Then he said:

"Was Daniel."

Everyone turned.

Slowly.

Toward Daniel.

His face changed.

The officer immediately noticed.

"Mr. Carter?"

Daniel looked at the screen.

"I can explain."

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because I didn’t know what else to do.

"Explain what?"

Daniel looked at me.

"Emily, I didn't know."

My father’s video continued.

"Daniel agreed to watch over Emily. He promised me he would never let anyone use her."

I looked at Daniel.

The man who had once promised to love me.

The man who now stood surrounded by evidence against him.

My father trusted him.

And Daniel failed.

The video continued.

"But if Daniel ever becomes part of the problem..."

My father paused.

The next sentence was quiet.

Almost a whisper.

"Emily, trust your instincts."

Then the screen went black.

Nobody moved.

The message ended.

But somehow, I felt like the real message had just started.

The officer looked at Daniel.

"How much did you know?"

Daniel sat down.

"I knew about her father’s investigation."

My chest tightened.

"How long?"

He closed his eyes.

"Since before we got married."

The silence afterward was painful.

Five years.

Five years of marriage.

Five years of believing I knew this man.

And he had carried a secret from the beginning.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Daniel looked at me.

"Because your father made me promise."

I stared at him.

"That doesn't make sense."

He looked broken.

"He wanted me to wait until the right time."

I stepped closer.

"And was the right time after you destroyed my reputation?"

"No."

His voice cracked.

"I made mistakes."

I looked at the broken mug on the floor.

"No, Daniel."

I shook my head.

"You made choices."

Victoria suddenly spoke.

"Enough."

Everyone looked at her.

She had been silent for too long.

And now I understood why.

She wasn’t shocked.

She was calculating.

The officer turned toward her.

"You knew about this?"

Victoria’s face hardened.

"I knew Emily’s father was hiding something."

"What exactly?"

She didn’t answer.

The officer stepped forward.

"Mrs. Carter."

Victoria sighed.

Then she looked at me.

"You really think your father was a hero?"

I froze.

The room changed.

Because her voice wasn’t defensive anymore.

It was confident.

"You never knew everything about him."

My heart started beating faster.

"What does that mean?"

Victoria smiled.

A cold smile.

"It means your father wasn’t investigating criminals."

She looked at the laptop.

"He was protecting himself."

Nobody spoke.

I wanted to believe she was lying.

I wanted to dismiss everything.

But then she said something that made my blood run cold.

"He left you the truth because he knew you would eventually find out what you really are."

The officer immediately moved between us.

"Stop talking."

But Victoria continued.

"Your father spent years hiding the biggest secret of your life."

I stared at her.

"What secret?"

She didn’t answer.

Instead, she looked at Daniel.

And Daniel looked away.

That was when I knew.

He knew.

There was another secret.

A bigger one.

Sarah walked toward the laptop.

"Emily."

I looked at her.

"There is another file."

"What file?"

She pointed at the screen.

A new folder had appeared.

It wasn’t there before.

Nobody had clicked anything.

Nobody had touched the laptop.

The folder name slowly appeared.

"EMILY CARTER - ORIGINAL RECORDS."

My hands became cold.

The officer looked at the device.

"Nobody open it."

But it was already opening.

Inside was one document.

One page.

One sentence at the top.

"Birth records were altered."

I stared at the words.

My entire body went numb.

Because underneath the document was a signature.

A signature I recognized.

My father’s.

And beside it was another name.

The person who changed my identity.

The person who had been hiding the truth my entire life.

The name appeared on the screen.

And Daniel whispered it before anyone else could read it.

"Emily..."

May you like

He looked terrified.

"Your mother."
