Chapter 6 - The Daughter Who Disappeared

Emma could not move.

The young woman beside Arthur Calderon was perhaps thirty-five.

Same brown eyes.

Same shape of the mouth.

Same small crease between the eyebrows Emma saw whenever she looked in a mirror after a difficult day.

“Who are you?” Emma asked.

The woman’s eyes filled.

“Claire.”

Elizabeth whispered, “Emma, I can explain.”

“No.”

Emma’s voice echoed.

“No more explaining later. No more protecting me. No more deciding what I should know.”

Arthur Calderon watched with amusement.

Old.

Thin.

Blanket across his legs.

But his eyes were sharp.

“You sound like your mother.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“Let Elizabeth go.”

Arthur smiled.

“Vittorio’s boy.”

Adrian’s face hardened.

“You used my father.”

“Your father understood business.”

“My father paid you to stay away from me.”

“He paid for time.”

Emma looked at Claire.

“You’re my sister?”

“Half-sister.”

“Whose daughter?”

Elizabeth answered.

“Mine.”

Emma laughed shakily.

“That part I understood.”

Claire said, “My father was Daniel Winters.”

Emma stared.

Daniel.

The chairman.

The man they rescued.

The man her mother warned her not to trust.

Arthur smiled wider.

“The family reunion improves.”

Perez stepped forward.

“Arthur Calderon, you are being detained pending investigation into kidnapping, conspiracy, extortion—”

Arthur laughed.

“You came into my building with four people.”

“Teams are upstairs.”

“And their communication is disabled.”

Marcus touched his earpiece.

Static.

Arthur continued.

“I built systems before your people were born.”

Adrian looked around.

“No exits behind us.”

The elevator doors had closed.

Locked.

Emma’s fear returned.

But she had learned something since the lobby.

Fear did not have to mean obedience.

She looked at her mother.

“Why did you hide Claire?”

Elizabeth’s face crumpled.

“I didn’t.”

Claire answered.

“Arthur took me.”

Emma went cold.

“When?”

“Seventeen years ago.”

Adrian looked at the photograph.

“The agreement.”

Claire nodded.

“Vittorio found me.”

Emma looked at Adrian.

“Your father knew?”

“He tried to get me out,” Claire said.

“What happened?”

“Arthur caught us.”

Adrian whispered, “My father told me he lost twelve million dollars.”

Claire almost smiled.

“He spent it.”

“On what?”

“Bribing guards. Buying records. Moving witnesses. Trying to dismantle Arthur’s network from the inside.”

Adrian stared at Arthur.

“You destroyed him.”

Arthur shrugged.

“Vittorio became sentimental.”

“He died believing he failed.”

“He did fail.”

“No,” Claire said.

Everyone looked at her.

“He saved Emma.”

Arthur’s smile faded.

Claire continued.

“After I disappeared, Mom changed her name. She moved. Years later, Emma was born. Vittorio made sure Arthur couldn’t find them.”

Emma looked at her mother.

Elizabeth nodded through tears.

“Adrian’s father protected us.”

Adrian looked away.

For the first time, Emma saw grief overwhelm his control.

Arthur interrupted.

“Touching.”

Emma turned toward him.

“Why me?”

“Because blood matters.”

“No.”

“Your mother rejected her duty. Claire proved inconvenient. Adrian inherited Vittorio’s defiance.”

Arthur leaned forward.

“You are adaptable.”

Emma almost laughed.

“You watched Cade attack me.”

“Yes.”

“You ordered it?”

“I ordered him to test you.”

Cade’s violence had been a test.

Her fear became rage.

“You had him choke me to see what I would do?”

“To see who would intervene.”

Arthur looked at Adrian.

“And he did.”

Adrian said, “You planned the lobby.”

“Not precisely. Cade lacks discipline.”

Emma thought of Cade outside the apartment, terrified.

“He turned against you.”

Arthur’s eyes darkened.

“Everyone disappoints eventually.”

Claire shifted subtly.

Emma noticed.

One hand moving toward the underside of the table.

A button?

Arthur didn’t see.

Emma kept talking.

“What happens now?”

“You come with me.”

“No.”

“You don’t understand the offer.”

“I don’t care.”

“You will own everything.”

“I already have a job.”

Arthur laughed.

“A receptionist?”

Emma looked at him.

“Yes.”

Something in her tone wiped the smile from his face.

“I liked my job.”

Arthur’s eyes narrowed.

Adrian almost smiled.

Emma continued.

“I liked knowing who came through the doors. I liked helping people. I liked making the lobby feel like somebody noticed you when you walked in.”

She stepped closer.

“You built an empire by making people afraid nobody would notice when they disappeared.”

Arthur watched her.

“I noticed.”

Claire pressed something beneath the table.

A green light blinked.

Marcus’s earpiece crackled.

Signal restored.

Arthur saw the light.

His face changed.

“Claire.”

Too late.

Perez’s radio erupted.

“MOVE! MOVE! BASEMENT TEAM!”

Arthur reached into his blanket.

Adrian lunged.

A gun appeared.

Emma screamed.

Adrian grabbed Arthur’s wrist.

The weapon fired into the ceiling.

Marcus knocked it away.

Perez restrained Arthur.

Doors burst open.

Police flooded the room.

Elizabeth ran to Emma.

They held each other.

For several seconds, Emma was eight years old again.

Then she remembered Claire.

She turned.

Her sister stood alone.

Unsure.

Emma opened one arm.

Claire broke.

She crossed the room and collapsed into them.

Three women.

Seventeen years of lies between them.

Still family.

Arthur Calderon was arrested.

His hidden facility was searched for two days.

Records connected the Executive Committee to decades of crimes.

Cade Branick surrendered formally and agreed to cooperate in exchange for consideration on charges unrelated to Emma’s assault.

Emma insisted the assault remain part of the prosecution.

Cade accepted it.

“I deserve that,” he said.

Daniel Winters was brought in for questioning.

When he saw Claire, he cried.

Emma watched from behind glass.

Claire did not immediately forgive him.

But she let him speak.

Adrian stood beside Emma.

“Your family is complicated.”

She looked at him.

“Your family is my family.”

He sighed.

“That is unfortunate.”

She laughed.

He did too.

Then Marcus entered.

The smile disappeared.

“We found something.”

“What?” Adrian asked.

“Arthur had a second command center.”

“Where?”

Marcus placed an address on the table.

Calderon Meridian headquarters.

Emma stared.

“Where inside?”

Marcus pointed to the building plans.

“Below the lobby.”

Emma’s heart sank.

“The reception desk?”

“Under it.”

They returned to Manhattan.

Police opened a hidden service hatch behind the reception wall.

A staircase descended beneath the lobby.

Emma followed Adrian.

At the bottom was a small room.

One desk.

One computer.

A live camera feed displayed every entrance to the building.

The reception desk.

The elevators.

Employee parking.

Emma’s apartment.

Her mother’s house.

Adrian’s penthouse.

Arthur had watched everyone.

Then Emma noticed one feed still active.

A hospital room.

A man lay unconscious.

Bandaged.

Adrian stepped closer.

His face changed.

“No.”

Emma looked at him.

“You know him?”

Adrian didn’t answer.

The patient shifted.

A nurse entered frame.

His chart became visible.

Marcus enlarged it.

The name read:

VITTORIO VALE.

Emma stared at Adrian.

“Your father is alive.”

Adrian stood frozen.

Then the hospital-room door opened.

A second man entered.

He leaned toward Vittorio and whispered something.

The camera had no audio.

Marcus enlarged the stranger’s face.

Emma recognized him.

Everyone did.

May you like

Daniel Winters.

And in his hand was a syringe.
