Chapter 5 - The Binder

Cade stood outside the guarded apartment without a weapon in his hands.
That made him more frightening.
Marcus positioned two men beside the door.
Detective Perez, who had arrived minutes earlier, raised her pistol.
“Cade Branick,” she called through the intercom. “Hands visible.”
Cade smiled toward the camera.
“They are.”
“Step away from the door.”
“No.”
“Do it now.”
“I came to trade.”
Emma stepped toward the monitor.
Adrian blocked her path.
“Stay back.”
Cade’s voice came through the speaker.
“Emma can hear me, can’t she?”
Emma hated how easily he said her name.
“I know you’re there.”
Adrian pressed the intercom.
“You have ten seconds.”
Cade laughed.
“You’re still doing the intimidation thing?”
“Nine.”
“Cute.”
“Eight.”
Cade lifted the blue binder.
“This what you want?”
Emma’s heart jumped.
Adrian stopped counting.
“Where is Elizabeth?”
Cade’s smile disappeared.
“I don’t have her.”
“Then who does?”
“That’s why I’m here.”
Perez looked suspicious.
“You expect us to believe you switched sides?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
Cade looked at the camera.
“I expect you to believe I don’t want to die.”
Silence.
Emma thought of the man’s confidence in the lobby.
Gone.
Cade Branick was afraid.
Adrian ordered him searched.
No weapons.
No tracker found.
They brought him inside in handcuffs.
Emma stayed across the room.
Cade noticed the bruise on her wrist.
For one second, something resembling discomfort passed across his face.
It vanished.
“Sorry about that.”
Emma stared at him.
“You covered my mouth and dragged me across a lobby.”
“I was under orders.”
“That makes it better?”
“No.”
“Good answer.”
Adrian took the binder.
“Who gave the order?”
Cade sat down.
“Arthur.”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“Arthur is dead.”
Cade looked at him.
“You keep saying that.”
Daniel fell silent.
Adrian opened the binder.
Nothing.
Blank visitor pages.
He flipped through.
No ledger.
Cade said, “Wrong section.”
Adrian looked at him.
“Spine.”
Marcus cut the leather binding.
Inside was a thin flash drive.
Emma stared.
Adrian removed it.
Cade said, “That’s what everyone has been killing for.”
“Where did you get the binder?”
“Elizabeth.”
Emma stepped forward.
“You saw my mother?”
“She found me.”
“When?”
“Two hours ago.”
“Where is she?”
“I don’t know now.”
Emma’s hands clenched.
Cade looked at her.
“She wanted me to bring that to you.”
“Why would she trust you?”
“She didn’t.”
“Then?”
“She trusted Vale.”
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
Cade leaned back.
“That surprised me too.”
They loaded the hidden drive onto an isolated computer.
One file.
A video.
Dated seventeen years earlier.
Adrian’s father appeared on-screen.
Vittorio Vale.
Younger.
Standing beside Elizabeth Cole.
Her hair darker.
Her face terrified.
Vittorio looked into the camera.
“If this recording survives, Arthur will have already broken the agreement.”
Adrian stopped breathing.
Vittorio continued.
“Elizabeth and her daughter must be left alone.”
Emma looked at her mother.
Daughter.
Not Emma.
She hadn’t been born seventeen years ago.
Who?
Vittorio said, “The Committee will never recruit another child.”
Elizabeth spoke.
“He already tried with Adrian.”
Adrian stared at the screen.
Vittorio put a hand on Elizabeth’s shoulder.
“I’m taking my son out of New York.”
The recording jumped.
Different date.
Arthur Calderon appeared.
Older man.
Silver hair.
Cold expression.
Very much alive.
Emma had never met him.
Yet something about his eyes resembled her mother.
Arthur said, “Families are businesses. Businesses require succession.”
Another jump.
Lists of names appeared.
Children.
Teenagers.
Young adults.
Psychological profiles.
Adrian’s name.
Daniel’s daughter.
Susan’s daughter.
Then—
Emma Cole.
Her profile dated three months earlier.
Education.
Work history.
Financial information.
Private messages.
Photographs.
Emma stepped back.
“They watched me.”
Cade nodded.
“That’s why I came after you.”
Adrian looked at him.
“You knew?”
“I knew she had been flagged.”
“For what?”
“Succession.”
Emma felt sick.
Cade continued.
“Arthur is old. If he’s alive, he needs someone to inherit the network.”
“And he chose Emma?” Adrian asked.
“Maybe.”
“Why?”
“Blood.”
Emma shook her head.
“No.”
Cade leaned forward.
“You think I wanted this? I joined corporate security ten years ago. Then one day they showed me pictures of my brother dealing drugs. Next day, I belonged to them.”
“You still chose to hurt people,” Emma said.
“Yes.”
He did not defend himself.
That surprised her more than an excuse would have.
Daniel said, “Where is Arthur?”
Cade laughed.
“You really don’t know?”
“No.”
“That means he never trusted you.”
Daniel stood.
Police stopped him.
“Tell us.”
Cade looked at Emma.
“Connecticut.”
The closed nursing facility.
Emma remembered her mother’s call.
Arthur’s voice.
Lizzie.
Adrian asked, “What is the facility?”
“Not a nursing home.”
“What then?”
“Archive.”
Susan whispered, “Physical records?”
“People.”
Emma stared.
“What?”
Cade looked ashamed.
“Witnesses. Former members. Anyone too useful to kill and too dangerous to release.”
Perez stepped closer.
“You are describing unlawful imprisonment.”
“Yes.”
“How many?”
“I don’t know.”
Daniel whispered, “Elizabeth went there intentionally.”
Cade nodded.
“She wanted Arthur to think she had the drive.”
“But you brought it here.”
“That was the plan.”
Emma stood.
“We’re going.”
Adrian said, “Police are going.”
“My mother is there.”
“You’re staying.”
She turned on him.
“Stop telling me that.”
“Stop walking toward armed criminals.”
“I sat behind a reception desk yesterday.”
“And?”
“And every person in this room knew more about my life than I did.”
Her voice cracked.
“They watched me. They followed my mother. They turned my workplace into some kind of recruitment test. I’m done sitting somewhere safe while other people decide what I’m allowed to know.”
Adrian stared at her.
Perez said, “I can put her in the command vehicle.”
Adrian looked annoyed.
Emma said, “That’s the closest thing to agreement I’m going to get.”
He finally nodded.
Before leaving, Adrian examined the video files again.
Something bothered him.
Emma noticed.
“What?”
“Timestamp.”
The final recording had been created three months ago.
Arthur Calderon appeared in frame.
Alive.
Sitting in a wheelchair.
He looked directly at the camera.
Then said:
“If Emma refuses, bring me Adrian.”
Emma stared.
Adrian’s face remained unreadable.
Cade said quietly, “That’s why he wanted you to buy the company.”
Adrian turned.
“What?”
“The sale was bait.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Adrian looked at him.
“You knew.”
Daniel remained silent.
“You knew.”
“I suspected.”
“You let me sign.”
“I needed someone powerful enough to destroy them.”
“You used me.”
“Yes.”
Adrian stepped toward him.
Emma intervened.
“Later.”
Adrian looked at her.
She held his gaze.
“Mom first.”
He nodded.
They drove north before sunrise.
The facility stood behind iron gates surrounded by bare trees.
Police tactical teams moved through the grounds.
No guards visible.
No lights except one upstairs window.
Emma watched from the command SUV.
Adrian wore a police communications earpiece but remained technically civilian.
Perez hated that.
Marcus stayed with him.
Cade had been brought in custody because he knew the building layout.
Daniel remained behind.
Teams entered.
First floor clear.
Second floor clear.
Then they found locked rooms.
People.
Six of them.
Three former Calderon employees.
A retired judge.
An accountant missing since 2019.
And Susan’s former supervisor, officially believed dead.
Emma’s stomach turned.
But no Elizabeth.
No Arthur.
Then a message appeared on Emma’s phone.
UNKNOWN.
YOU CAME.
She showed Adrian.
Another message.
EAST WING.
ALONE, OR YOUR MOTHER LEAVES IN A BAG.
Adrian swore.
Police moved toward the east wing.
Emma watched body-camera feeds.
Hallways.
Empty rooms.
A stairwell.
Then every feed cut out.
Static.
Perez shouted commands.
No response.
The lights across the property went dark.
Emma stared through the windshield.
One upstairs window remained lit.
A shadow appeared behind the glass.
A woman.
Her mother.
Emma opened the SUV door.
Adrian caught it.
“Don’t.”
“She’s there.”
“It’s bait.”
“I know.”
“Then don’t take it.”
Emma looked at him.
“What would you do if it were your father?”
Adrian said nothing.
She stepped out.
He followed.
They approached the east wing with Marcus and Perez.
The door stood open.
Inside, candles lined the hallway.
Someone wanted them to see the path.
At the far end waited an elevator.
Old brass doors.
They opened automatically.
Inside was one button.
B.
Basement.
Emma pressed it.
The elevator descended.
Adrian stood beside her.
Perez and Marcus behind.
The doors opened.
A long underground corridor stretched ahead.
At the end sat a wheelchair.
Empty.
On its seat rested a photograph.
Emma picked it up.
It showed her as a baby.
Her mother held her.
Behind them stood Vittorio Vale.
Adrian’s father.
On the back, written in black ink:
SHE WAS NEVER YOUR ONLY CHILD.
Emma turned toward Adrian.
“What does that mean?”
He looked equally stunned.
Then speakers crackled overhead.
Arthur Calderon’s voice filled the corridor.
“Emma.”
She froze.
“Grandfather?” she whispered.
A door at the end of the hall slowly opened.
Elizabeth Cole stood inside.
Behind her was an elderly man in a wheelchair.
And beside him stood a young woman Emma had never seen.
May you like
The woman looked directly at Emma and whispered:
“Hello, sister.”
