Chapter 14 - What Was Beneath the Wheelchair

The wheelchair was retrieved the next morning.
Gabriel had divers search the lake.
They found it twenty feet below the terrace.
Something was attached beneath the seat.
A metal box.
Julian stared at it.
“Open it.”
Gabriel did.
Inside was a memory card.
And a photograph.
The photograph showed Julian before his accident.
Standing.
Walking.
Smiling.
Beside him was Andrew.
And behind them stood Marcus.
But that wasn't the shocking part.
A fourth person was visible in the reflection of a window.
Claire's mother.
Julian looked at Claire.
“She knew.”
Claire nodded.
“My mother knew everything.”
They played the memory card.
A video appeared.
Marcus spoke directly to the camera.
“If Julian discovers this, he will understand why I needed him alive.”
Julian stared.
Marcus continued.
“Julian wasn't the problem.”
The video changed.
It showed Julian entering the foundation office before the accident.
He was holding a folder.
Then he turned toward the camera.
And said:
“I know what you've been doing.”
Marcus appeared behind him.
The recording ended.
Julian sat silently.
He finally understood.
The accident wasn't revenge.
Marcus needed Julian alive because Julian had the only proof linking the foundation to the illegal experiments.
The wheelchair had been modified to conceal the evidence.
The lake incident was an attempt to retrieve it.
Claire looked at Julian.
“You were carrying the proof all along.”
He nodded.
“I didn't know.”
“You survived because you didn't know.”
He looked at her.
“And because you jumped.”
They sat quietly.
Then Julian stood.
Not with the wheelchair.
He pushed himself upright against the railing.
His legs shook.
Claire reached for him.
“I've got you.”
He took one step.
Then another.
Tears filled his eyes.
He laughed.
“I thought I would never do this.”
Claire smiled.
“You're doing it now.”
He took another step.
Then stopped.
“I need you.”
“I know.”
He turned toward her.
“I don't mean because I need help walking.”
She waited.
“I need you because you're the first person who saw me as a man before you saw the wheelchair.”
Claire's eyes filled.
“I didn't save a wheelchair.”
He smiled.
“You saved me.”
Behind them, Julian's father watched.
Victoria stood beside him.
For once, nobody was hiding.
The investigation ended weeks later.
Marcus was formally charged.
The foundation was dismantled.
The victims received compensation.
Victoria testified.
Reed cooperated.
Julian's father publicly admitted his mistakes.
Andrew returned home.
Claire's mother finally told her the truth about the years she had spent hiding.
The family began rebuilding.
But Julian wasn't finished.
He wanted to reopen the foundation under a new name.
A place where disabled patients would receive treatment without being used or exploited.
Claire helped him.
Months passed.
Julian walked farther every day.
Then one afternoon, he asked Claire to meet him beside Lake Bellweather.
The same terrace.
The same water.
The same place where everything had changed.
He held out his hand.
Claire took it.
Julian smiled.
“I have one more question.”
“What?”
He reached into his pocket.
Claire looked at the small box.
Her breath caught.
Julian opened it.
Inside was a ring.
He began to speak.
May you like
Then he stopped.
Because from the far end of the terrace, Andrew suddenly shouted Claire's name...
