Chapter 12 - The Witness
A man stood outside.
Julian's father.
No.
That was impossible.
The man was older.
His face was thinner.
But the resemblance was unmistakable.
Julian stared.
“Dad?”
The man stepped inside.
“I should have come sooner.”
Victoria collapsed into a chair.
Claire looked at Elena.
Elena covered her mouth.
“You're alive.”
Julian's father nodded.
“Barely.”
Julian moved toward him.
“You let me believe you were dead.”
“I had to.”
“You let me believe my mother was dead.”
“I had to.”
“You let me believe Andrew disappeared.”
“I had to.”
Julian's voice cracked.
“What didn't you have to do?”
His father lowered his head.
“Nothing.”
Silence.
“I failed you.”
Julian stared at him.
“Why?”
“Because I trusted Marcus.”
His father explained everything.
Marcus had built the medical foundation as a legitimate charity.
Then he began stealing money.
When Julian discovered the fraud, Marcus arranged the bridge accident.
His father tried to stop him.
Marcus retaliated.
He ordered Reed to damage Julian's spinal cord.
Then he threatened everyone who knew the truth.
Julian's father faked his death to continue gathering evidence.
“But why didn't you tell me?”
“Because Marcus had people watching you.”
Julian looked down.
“And Claire?”
His father looked at her.
“Your brother found the final evidence.”
Andrew nodded.
“The evidence is in the original foundation archive.”
“Where?”
His father pointed toward the lake.
“Under the terrace.”
Claire remembered the wheelchair.
The recording device.
The cut strap.
“The wheelchair.”
Julian looked at her.
“What?”
“The device wasn't attached to monitor you.”
She understood.
“It was attached to find the archive.”
They returned to the terrace.
The lake was calm.
The celebration was gone.
Julian's father led them to a stone marker.
Beneath it was a waterproof container.
Inside were documents, recordings, and photographs.
Everything Marcus had tried to destroy.
Gabriel called federal investigators.
Within hours, the foundation's records were secured.
Marcus was arrested.
Victoria agreed to testify.
Reed survived his gunshot wound.
Claire's mother entered witness protection.
And Julian finally received the medical care he should have received years earlier.
But one question remained.
Julian's father handed Claire a final envelope.
“This belongs to you.”
Inside was a letter from Andrew.
It explained why Claire had been hired.
Julian had asked for her specifically.
Not because she was the best candidate.
Because Andrew had told him:
“She is the one person who will jump.”
Claire looked at Julian.
“You knew?”
“I hoped.”
She smiled.
“You're lucky.”
“I know.”
Julian looked toward the lake.
Then down at his feet.
He moved one toe.
Claire saw it.
“You did it.”
He smiled.
“Not alone.”
For the first time since the accident, Julian looked peaceful.
Then a federal agent approached.
“We found something else in Marcus's records.”
Julian frowned.
“What?”
The agent handed him a file.
Inside was a photograph from the night of the bridge accident.
Julian looked at it.
Then his expression changed.
“That's not possible.”
Claire stepped closer.
“What?”
Julian pointed at the photograph.
