Chapter 9 - The Night Sophia Disappeared

Sophia did not go alone.

She also did not tell Alessandro.

That distinction mattered less than she hoped.

Valentina’s note included an address handwritten on the reverse.

Sophia recognized it.

The Grand Aurelia Hotel.

Her canceled wedding venue.

At 2:10 a.m., while Alessandro coordinated the search for Vittorio, Sophia left through the service entrance.

She hated deceiving him.

But Vittorio had built every move around men deciding what Sophia was allowed to know.

She was finished waiting.

The hotel was nearly empty.

The gold sign from her wedding had finally been removed.

Only faint marks remained on the wall.

Sophia entered the ballroom.

A single light illuminated the center.

Valentina sat in a chair.

Alone.

“Sophia.”

Sophia rushed toward her.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“Where is Vittorio?”

“Watching.”

Sophia stopped.

Valentina looked toward the ceiling cameras.

“He wants the shares.”

“He can’t have them.”

“He doesn’t expect you to give them voluntarily.”

“Then why bring me here?”

Valentina’s face tightened.

“Because Daniel made one more mistake.”

Sophia’s stomach sank.

“What?”

“He signed a transfer agreement.”

“To Vittorio?”

“Yes.”

“He doesn’t own my shares.”

“No. But he forged your signature.”

Sophia almost laughed.

“Again?”

“This one predates your canceled wedding.”

Valentina handed her a copy.

Sophia studied the signature.

Perfect.

Then she noticed the date.

The day Daniel proposed.

“He planned everything.”

“At first.”

Sophia looked up.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

“Because people are complicated.”

Valentina stood.

“Daniel intended to use you. Then he fell in love with you. Then he resented himself for needing you. Then he chose Elena because betraying you was easier than admitting what he had done.”

“That doesn’t make it better.”

“No.”

Valentina’s eyes softened.

“Understanding is not forgiveness.”

Sophia folded the document.

“Why did you bring me here?”

“To destroy Vittorio’s leverage.”

“How?”

“Publicly announce the forgery and transfer the voting rights into an independent trust.”

Sophia frowned.

“Why not tell Alessandro?”

“Because Vittorio believes Alessandro controls you.”

“He doesn’t.”

“I know.”

Valentina smiled faintly.

“That’s why this can work.”

A sound came from behind them.

Daniel entered.

Sophia stiffened.

“You.”

He raised both hands.

“I’m not here to hurt you.”

“You forged my signature.”

His face collapsed.

“Yes.”

“Was anything real?”

“Yes.”

“That answer means nothing anymore.”

“I know.”

Daniel approached slowly.

“I signed the document before I proposed. I told myself it was temporary.”

“You built our engagement on fraud.”

“Yes.”

“And Elena?”

His eyes lowered.

“That was real too.”

Sophia expected pain.

Instead, there was relief.

Daniel loved Elena.

Perhaps badly.

Perhaps selfishly.

But Sophia no longer wanted him to regret choosing her sister.

She wanted him to become someone capable of choosing honestly.

“Then stop using her.”

He looked up.

“I did.”

“Where is she?”

“Safe with your father.”

Sophia nodded.

“Good.”

Daniel pulled a document from his coat.

“The original forged transfer.”

He tore it in half.

Then again.

“It’s also digitally registered,” Sophia said.

“I know.”

He handed her a flash drive.

“Everything is here. Emails. Messages. Vittorio’s instructions. My accounts.”

Sophia stared.

“You’re giving me evidence against yourself.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Daniel looked toward the empty ballroom.

“Because Alessandro was right.”

“About?”

“Consequences.”

Before Sophia could answer, the ballroom doors opened.

Alessandro entered.

His face was terrifying.

Not because he shouted.

Because he did not.

His eyes found Sophia.

Relief came first.

Then anger.

He walked toward her.

“You left.”

“Yes.”

“Without security.”

“Yes.”

“After a man threatened you.”

“Yes.”

He stopped.

Sophia waited for the lecture.

Instead he closed his eyes.

When he opened them, the anger was gone.

Only fear remained.

“Don’t do that to me again.”

The vulnerability in his voice hurt.

Sophia stepped closer.

“I’m sorry.”

“I’m not asking you to obey me.”

“I know.”

“I’m asking you to let me know you’re alive.”

Her throat tightened.

“I can do that.”

Daniel watched them.

Something like acceptance crossed his face.

Then applause sounded from the balcony.

Slow.

Mocking.

Vittorio.

“Beautiful.”

Alessandro turned.

Security moved.

Vittorio held up a phone.

“Careful.”

On the screen was Elena.

Tied to a chair.

Daniel went white.

“You said she was with Antonio.”

“She was.”

Vittorio smiled.

“Family is so easy to predict.”

Daniel lunged toward the stairs.

Alessandro caught him.

“Think.”

“That’s Elena!”

“And running into a trap won’t save her.”

Sophia looked at Vittorio.

“What do you want?”

“The drive.”

“No.”

“Then your sister suffers for your principles.”

Sophia stared at him.

“No.”

Vittorio frowned.

“No?”

“You want me to panic.”

She lifted Daniel’s drive.

“You need this more than you need Elena.”

His eyes changed.

Sophia knew she was right.

“Let her go.”

Vittorio smiled.

“You’re more like your mother than I expected.”

“And you’re less frightening than everyone promised.”

Alessandro glanced at her.

Daniel almost smiled despite himself.

Vittorio’s expression hardened.

Then every light in the ballroom went dark.

Sophia heard Alessandro shout her name.

A hand covered her mouth.

An arm wrapped around her waist.

She fought.

Someone whispered against her ear.

May you like

“Your mother told me you would be difficult.”

Then Sophia was dragged through a door she had never seen before.
