Chapter 11 - The Secret Daniel Sold

The recording began.
Isabella sat in a plain room.
She looked tired.
Alive.
“Sophia, Elena, if you ever see this, I need you to know I chose what happened next.”
Sophia gripped the table.
Her mother continued.
“I discovered something worse than Vittorio’s accounts.”
Documents appeared beside the video.
Corporate records.
Names.
Officials.
Bankers.
Judges.
Vittorio had built protection through bribery.
Isabella had copied everything.
Then she said the sentence that changed the room.
“Daniel is not responsible for his father’s crimes.”
Daniel looked away.
“I knew Vittorio would eventually try to use him. Carlo knew too. That is why Carlo raised Daniel as his own.”
Alessandro stared at the screen.
His father had known.
Fully.
“He loved Daniel,” Isabella continued. “Even when he struggled to show it.”
Daniel sat down.
Tears filled his eyes.
Sophia watched him break.
Not dramatically.
Quietly.
A son discovering too late that the father he resented had chosen him every day.
The recording continued.
“The shares belong to Sophia because she was the only person outside both families whom Vittorio could not legally control.”
Sophia frowned.
She had been a child.
Then Isabella smiled sadly.
“My daughter, if you are watching this as a grown woman, do not let dead people decide your life.”
Sophia’s eyes filled.
“Do not inherit our fear.”
The recording ended.
Silence.
Daniel wiped his face.
“I spent my whole life thinking Carlo hated me.”
Alessandro sat beside him.
“He didn’t.”
“You knew?”
“No.”
Daniel laughed through tears.
“I hated you.”
“I know.”
“I tried to take everything from you.”
“I know.”
Daniel looked at him.
“And you still came for me.”
Alessandro’s expression softened.
“You’re my brother.”
Daniel bowed his head.
Sophia stepped away.
Elena followed.
Outside, morning light spread across the lake.
For several minutes, neither sister spoke.
Then Elena said, “I’m sorry.”
Sophia closed her eyes.
“I know.”
“That doesn’t fix it.”
“No.”
“I don’t expect you to forgive me.”
“Good.”
Elena nodded.
Sophia looked at her.
“I loved him.”
“I know.”
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“And you still—”
“I know.”
Elena cried.
Sophia did not comfort her immediately.
Some pain deserved space.
Finally she said, “Why?”
Elena wiped her face.
“Because for once I wanted someone to choose me instead of you.”
Sophia stared.
“I never knew we were competing.”
“That was the problem.”
The answer hurt.
Elena had spent her life competing in a race Sophia had never entered.
“Daniel chose you,” Sophia said.
Elena looked down.
“Yes.”
“Then make sure next time he chooses you honestly.”
Elena looked surprised.
“You think there’s a next time?”
“I think that’s between you and Daniel.”
Sophia walked away.
She found Alessandro alone in the garden.
“You disappeared.”
“I walked fifty feet.”
“Progress.”
He smiled.
She stopped beside him.
“What happens now?”
“To Vittorio?”
“To us.”
His smile vanished.
“I don’t know.”
Sophia appreciated the answer.
“I don’t want to become the woman who runs from one engagement into another relationship because the second man feels safer.”
“You shouldn’t.”
“I need time.”
“You have it.”
“I might take months.”
“Take months.”
“A year.”
“Take a year.”
She narrowed her eyes.
“That’s annoyingly reasonable.”
“I can become difficult if it helps.”
She laughed.
Then he became serious.
“I have wanted you for seven years. Waiting is not new.”
Her heart stumbled.
“You really mean that.”
“Yes.”
Sophia looked at his mouth.
Then his eyes.
She stepped forward.
This time, she chose.
Their first kiss was gentle.
No desperate grabbing.
No claim.
Alessandro touched her face as though asking a question.
Sophia answered by kissing him again.
When they separated, his forehead rested against hers.
Then his phone rang.
He ignored it.
It rang again.
Sophia smiled.
“You should answer.”
“I strongly disagree.”
“Alessandro.”
He sighed and looked.
The warmth vanished from his face.
“What?”
He turned the screen toward her.
An email had arrived from Moretti Holdings’ board.
Emergency meeting.
