Chapter 14 - The Last Moretti Secret

Sophia stared at the document.

“No.”

Antonio approached.

One look at the paper destroyed his composure.

“Where did you get this?”

“Vittorio’s vault,” Valentina said.

Sophia looked at her father.

“Is it real?”

Antonio’s silence hurt.

“Dad.”

He sat down.

“Yes.”

Sophia felt Alessandro beside her.

He did not touch her.

She reached for him.

He took her hand.

“Who is my father?”

Antonio looked at her.

“I am.”

“The document says Carlo Moretti.”

Alessandro became completely still.

Sophia felt his hand loosen.

Not release.

Loosen.

Everyone understood at once.

If Carlo were Sophia’s biological father—

She and Alessandro—

“No,” Antonio said quickly. “Carlo was not your biological father.”

Sophia nearly collapsed with relief.

“Then why is his name there?”

“Protection.”

Valentina understood.

“Vittorio.”

Antonio nodded.

“When Isabella discovered the pregnancy, Vittorio became convinced the child might be his.”

Sophia stared.

“What?”

“It wasn’t.”

“Whose?”

Antonio’s eyes filled.

“Mine.”

Sophia closed her eyes.

Antonio continued.

“Isabella and I were together. We were already planning to marry. But Vittorio had become obsessed with your mother after Valentina left him.”

Valentina looked sick.

“He thought Isabella belonged to him because she looked like me.”

“Yes.”

Sophia squeezed Alessandro’s hand.

“So Mom put Carlo’s name on a document?”

“Carlo offered. Vittorio would never challenge him openly then.”

“But my legal birth certificate?”

“Corrected later. That document was a decoy.”

Sophia laughed shakily.

“So you are my father.”

Antonio stood.

“I have been every day of your life.”

She hugged him.

He broke.

For months Sophia had watched her father carry guilt.

Now she understood its shape.

When they separated, she looked at Alessandro.

“You thought…”

“For approximately twenty horrible seconds.”

“So did I.”

He rubbed a hand over his face.

Valentina almost smiled.

“I should have led with ‘the document is false.’”

“Yes,” Sophia and Alessandro said together.

For once, the room laughed.

The final secret was not another catastrophe.

It was evidence of how desperately their parents had tried to survive a dangerous past.

Vittorio’s trial began six months later.

Sophia testified.

So did Alessandro.

Daniel testified against his biological father.

Valentina gave the most devastating evidence.

Vittorio watched them from the defense table.

He had spent his life believing fear created loyalty.

One by one, the people he had frightened chose truth instead.

The verdict came after weeks of testimony.

Guilty on multiple counts.

There were appeals ahead.

Legal battles.

Nothing in real life ended as neatly as movies promised.

But Vittorio’s control was finished.

Outside the courthouse, reporters shouted questions.

Sophia ignored them.

Alessandro waited beside the car.

He extended his hand.

She smiled.

“You still do that.”

“What?”

“The hand.”

“You keep taking it.”

“Maybe I like it.”

“Useful information.”

She took his hand.

Two years had passed since the engagement party.

Sophia no longer recognized the woman who had arrived there determined to prove Daniel could not make her disappear.

She had spent so much energy refusing to disappear that she had not understood the larger possibility.

She could become visible to herself.

Her work at the foundation expanded.

She remained on the Moretti board.

She and Alessandro maintained separate offices.

Separate votes.

Occasionally separate opinions loud enough to terrify junior executives.

At home, they were softer.

Alessandro learned risotto.

Eventually.

Sophia learned he secretly watched terrible reality television.

He denied it.

She collected evidence.

Daniel completed his sentence.

When he emerged, Elena was waiting.

Their relationship had changed.

They did not rush toward marriage.

Sophia approved of that, though she kept the opinion mostly to herself.

One evening, Elena visited Sophia.

“I have something for you.”

She handed her a box.

Inside was Sophia’s original wedding veil.

Sophia stared.

“I thought I threw this away.”

“I kept it.”

“Why?”

Elena looked ashamed.

“At first? Because I wanted it.”

Sophia laughed in disbelief.

“Of course you did.”

“Then I couldn’t throw it away.”

Sophia touched the lace.

It no longer hurt.

“Keep it.”

Elena frowned.

“Why?”

“Because it belongs to a wedding that never happened.”

Elena began crying.

“Soph.”

Sophia hugged her.

“You were my sister before Daniel.”

“I know.”

“You’re my sister after him too.”

That did not erase betrayal.

It meant betrayal did not get the final word.

Later that night Sophia returned home.

Alessandro was on the balcony.

She joined him.

“Bad day?”

“No.”

“Good day?”

“Strange day.”

He handed her wine.

She leaned against him.

After a moment, she said, “I’m ready.”

He frowned.

“For?”

Sophia smiled.

“You really abandoned the proposal.”

“You told me to.”

“I said I wasn’t ready.”

“Yes.”

“I didn’t say never.”

Alessandro stared at her.

Then understanding appeared.

His expression became almost comically cautious.

“Sophia.”

“Yes?”

“I need extremely clear instructions because I value my continued survival.”

She laughed.

“I’m ready for you to ask.”

He looked at her for several seconds.

Then reached into his pocket.

Nothing.

Sophia burst out laughing.

“You don’t have it.”

“The ring is upstairs.”

“You carried it for months before.”

“And after being rejected, I developed dignity.”

“You were not rejected.”

“Technical distinction.”

He started toward the door.

Sophia caught his arm.

“No.”

He stopped.

“Tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow?”

“I want Marcela there. Dad. Elena.”

“Daniel?”

Sophia considered.

“Yes.”

Alessandro raised an eyebrow.

“You’ve become alarmingly evolved.”

“Don’t ruin it.”

He kissed her.

The next evening, they gathered at the same villa where everything had begun.

Sophia wore a rose-colored dress.

Not because she wanted to recreate the past.

Because she liked the color.

Alessandro stood before her.

No audience of strangers.

Only family.

Chosen and inherited.

He reached into his jacket.

Then the lights suddenly went out.

Everyone groaned.

Sophia laughed.

“You have got to be kidding me.”

Alessandro’s voice came through the darkness.

“This is not part of the proposal.”

Emergency lights flickered.

His phone rang.

He looked at it.

The smile vanished from his face.

Sophia stepped closer.

“What happened?”

Alessandro stared at the message.

Then at Daniel.

Daniel’s face went white.

A single sentence glowed on the screen.

VITTORIO MANCINI DIED ONE HOUR AGO—BUT HE LEFT SOPHIA ONE FINAL DELIVERY.

May you like

Someone knocked on the villa door.

Three times.
