Chapter 3 - James Bennett’s Last Ledger

Mrs. Costa had given Sophia only three rules.

The third suddenly mattered more than the first two combined.

Never open the black door at the end of the third-floor hallway.

Dominic drove back himself.

When they entered the mansion, the remaining guests were gone.

Mrs. Costa waited in the foyer.

“Where is Vale?”

Dominic asked.

Her expression tightened.

“Third floor.”

“You knew?”

“I saw him on the camera.”

“Why didn’t you stop him?”

“I tried.”

Mrs. Costa held up a security tablet.

The screen showed static.

“He disabled the third-floor system.”

Dominic handed Emma to Mrs. Costa.

“Take her downstairs.”

“No,” Emma said.

Sophia crouched.

“Sweetheart, go with Mrs. Costa.”

“Are you coming back?”

“Yes.”

“Promise?”

Sophia kissed her forehead.

“Promise.”

Dominic and Sophia climbed the stairs with two guards.

At the end of the third-floor corridor stood a matte-black door.

It was open.

Inside was not a bedroom.

It was an archive.

Shelves covered every wall.

Files.

Hard drives.

Photographs.

Dominic stopped in the doorway.

“What is this?”

Sophia looked at him.

“You don’t know?”

“No.”

One guard found fresh footprints in dust.

Dominic followed them to a desk.

A laptop was missing.

So was a section of files labeled 2019–2024.

Sophia saw another label.

ATLANTIC MERIDIAN.

The folder was empty.

Dominic’s expression became lethal.

“Who had access to this room?”

Mrs. Costa appeared behind them.

“Your father.”

Dominic turned.

“My father has been dead eight years.”

“He created the archive.”

“And you never told me?”

“He ordered me not to.”

Dominic stared at her.

Mrs. Costa looked older suddenly.

“Your father suspected someone inside the organization was stealing from him. He collected evidence here. After his death, I locked the room.”

“Who else knew?”

“One person.”

Dominic already knew.

“Adrian.”

Mrs. Costa nodded.

Sophia remembered James’s note.

D.M. DOESN’T KNOW.

A.V. DOES.

Dominic opened the damaged ledger.

The pattern became clearer.

Millions had moved through false shipping contracts.

Atlantic Meridian had been laundering stolen money.

Not for Dominic.

From Dominic.

James had discovered it.

Sophia turned another page.

A handwritten notation appeared beside one transaction:

V.R.

Vivian Romano.

Dominic stared.

“My fiancée.”

“Former fiancée,” Sophia said quietly.

His eyes met hers.

For a second, something almost warm passed between them.

Then a guard called from the corridor.

“Boss.”

They found a small envelope wedged behind the empty Atlantic Meridian shelf.

James Bennett was written across it.

Sophia’s hands trembled.

Inside was a photograph of James holding baby Emma.

And a letter.

Sophia—

If this reaches you, I failed.

She stopped.

Dominic said nothing.

She continued.

James explained that he had discovered a hidden partnership between Atlantic Meridian and someone close to Dominic.

He had copied records.

He had hidden evidence.

And he had made one terrible mistake.

He told Adrian Vale.

Sophia closed her eyes.

James had trusted him.

That trust had killed him.

At the bottom, James wrote:

There is more. The rabbit is only the first key.

Sophia looked toward Dominic.

“The first?”

A scream came from downstairs.

Sophia ran.

“Emma!”

She reached the foyer.

Mrs. Costa stood beside the open front door.

Emma was safe behind her.

But a black sedan was racing away through the gates.

On the marble floor lay Emma’s blue hat.

Pinned through it with a knife was a message.

Dominic pulled it free.

BURN THE LEDGER OR THE CHILD IS NEXT.

Sophia stared at the disappearing taillights.

Then Emma tugged her sleeve.

“Mommy.”

Sophia crouched.

“What?”

Emma pointed upstairs.

“The silver-haired man gave me something.”

“What silver-haired man?”

“The one from Daddy’s picture.”

Sophia’s blood turned cold.

Emma opened her small fist.

May you like

Inside was another key.

And unlike the first one, this key was stained with fresh blood.
