Chapter 13 - James Bennett’s Final Secret

They found Mrs. Costa two days later.
She was sitting in a small church in Yonkers.
Alone.
Dominic sat beside her.
“You promised my father something.”
Mrs. Costa nodded.
“To get you out.”
“Out of what?”
“The life he built.”
Dominic stared ahead.
Mrs. Costa explained that Dominic’s father had regretted the empire he created.
He knew Rafael loved power.
He knew Dominic carried responsibility like a punishment.
So he created the contingency fund.
James Bennett discovered it while auditing Atlantic Meridian.
Instead of stealing it, James helped protect it.
Dominic’s father trusted him.
That was the connection nobody knew.
James had not been an ordinary accountant caught in the wrong place.
He had knowingly risked his life to expose Rafael.
Sophia cried.
“Why didn’t he tell me?”
“Because knowing would have put you in greater danger.”
Mrs. Costa gave her one final letter.
James had written it shortly before his death.
Sophia read it alone.
He apologized.
He told her he loved her.
He told Emma—still a baby—that courage was not being unafraid.
It was choosing who you wanted to be while afraid.
And then James wrote something Sophia did not expect.
If Dominic Moretti ever finds this, tell him I did not protect his money. I protected his chance to become someone his son or daughter could be proud of someday.
Dominic read that sentence twice.
“I don’t have children.”
Emma climbed onto the church pew beside him.
“You can borrow me.”
Sophia laughed through her tears.
Dominic did too.
It was the first time she had heard it.
A real laugh.
For several weeks, the Moretti organization unraveled.
Dominic surrendered records.
Legitimate companies were separated from criminal operations.
Attorneys negotiated cooperation agreements.
Men who had believed Dominic would never abandon power discovered they had misunderstood him.
He did not abandon it.
He used it differently.
Employees kept their jobs where businesses were legitimate.
Victims received restitution.
The contingency fund became the foundation of a legal restructuring plan.
Sophia returned to work only once.
She walked into the mansion wearing her maid uniform.
Dominic saw her.
“What are you doing?”
“My job.”
“No.”
She frowned.
“You fired me?”
“Yes.”
Her mouth fell open.
“Dominic.”
“You’re terrible at taking orders.”
She stared.
Then he smiled.
“You’re also now the legal representative of the Bennett restitution trust. It pays considerably better.”
Sophia crossed her arms.
“You cannot simply decide my career.”
“Mrs. Costa said the same thing.”
“And?”
“She suggested I ask.”
He paused.
“Will you take the position?”
Sophia smiled.
“Yes.”
That evening, Emma ran through the ballroom where everything had begun.
No frightened guests.
No raised hands.
No Vivian.
Just sunlight.
She stopped beside the silver tray still displayed on a side table.
Dominic had kept it.
Not the ring.
Only the tray.
A reminder.
Sophia’s phone rang.
Federal investigator.
She answered.
His first words erased her smile.
“We found another Atlantic Meridian file.”
“What kind?”
“A beneficiary file.”
Sophia’s stomach tightened.
“Whose?”
May you like
There was a pause.
“Emma’s.”
