Chapter 14 - The Man Behind the Betrayal

The beneficiary file was not what Sophia feared.
James had created it.
Every legitimate dollar owed to him through Atlantic Meridian had been placed in trust for Emma.
Rafael had tried to steal it.
He failed.
But the file contained one final piece of evidence.
A signed order.
Rafael had authorized the attack on James.
Anthony had authorized the injection.
Adrian had authorized destruction of records.
Marco had authorized transport.
Four signatures.
Four men.
The entire chain.
Sophia finally had proof.
Not suspicion.
Not grief.
Proof.
At Rafael’s preliminary hearing, she sat behind prosecutors.
Dominic sat beside her.
Rafael looked back once.
He smiled.
Sophia did not.
For years, men like him had depended on people being afraid.
Sophia had been afraid.
She simply came anyway.
Vivian testified.
So did Adrian.
Marco testified last.
He admitted everything.
When asked why he had finally turned against Rafael, he looked toward Emma.
“Because James Bennett died protecting a future he would never see. I helped take it from him. I wasn’t going to help take his daughter too.”
The evidence was overwhelming.
Rafael would face trial on murder, conspiracy, kidnapping, racketeering and financial crimes.
Anthony Romano faced many of the same charges.
Adrian’s cooperation did not erase his crimes.
Neither did Marco’s.
Actions had consequences.
Dominic understood that better than anyone.
Outside the courthouse, reporters surrounded him.
“Mr. Moretti, are you leaving the family business?”
“The illegal parts are already gone.”
“Are you cooperating with federal authorities?”
“Yes.”
“Do you regret dismantling what your father built?”
Dominic paused.
“My father built something he later regretted. I’m finishing the job he didn’t live long enough to finish.”
Sophia watched from the steps.
Emma held her hand.
“Is Mr. Dominic famous?”
“Unfortunately.”
“Are we famous?”
“I hope not.”
Emma considered that.
“Mr. Hops can be famous.”
Vivian approached.
She looked different without diamonds and gowns.
Smaller.
More human.
She stopped before Sophia.
“I owe you an apology.”
“Yes.”
Vivian blinked.
She had apparently expected Sophia to make it easier.
Sophia did not.
“I hit you because I thought your job made you less important than me.”
“Yes.”
“I treated Emma terribly.”
“Yes.”
Vivian swallowed.
“I’m ashamed.”
Sophia looked at her for a long moment.
“I believe you.”
“Do you forgive me?”
“Not yet.”
Vivian nodded.
“That’s fair.”
Emma tugged Sophia’s hand.
“Mommy?”
“Yes?”
“She said sorry.”
“I heard.”
Emma looked at Vivian.
“Don’t hit people anymore.”
Vivian’s eyes filled.
“I won’t.”
“Okay.”
For Emma, that settled it.
Adults were more complicated.
Months passed.
Dominic sold the mansion.
Sophia was surprised.
“Why?”
“Too many rooms.”
Emma objected.
“I liked the stairs.”
“You fell down them twice.”
“I liked falling.”
Dominic found a smaller estate nearby.
Still enormous by Sophia’s standards.
Emma called it “the little house,” which made Mrs. Costa laugh for nearly a minute.
Sophia and Dominic grew closer slowly.
No dramatic declarations.
Coffee in kitchens.
Late conversations.
Emma asleep between them during movies.
Dominic learning how to braid hair badly.
Sophia learning that he woke from nightmares but never mentioned them.
One evening, he stood beside her on the porch.
“I don’t know how to do this.”
“What?”
He looked at her.
“This.”
Sophia understood.
“Neither do I.”
“I spent most of my life believing control kept people safe.”
“And?”
“A three-year-old in one boot proved me wrong.”
Sophia smiled.
Dominic touched her hand.
“May I?”
She intertwined her fingers with his.
“Yes.”
Inside, something crashed.
Emma shouted, “I’m okay!”
They both laughed.
Then Dominic’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His smile vanished.
Sophia saw the name.
Rafael Moretti.
But Rafael was in federal custody.
Dominic answered.
No voice came.
Only a photograph.
Emma sleeping upstairs.
Taken minutes earlier.
May you like
Dominic looked toward the house.
The upstairs window was open.
