Chapter 9 - Elena's Confession

Elena sat in the bank vault with both hands clasped.
Vincent said nothing.
Rose said nothing.
That made the truth harder to avoid.
"My husband Daniel found evidence linking Thomas to shell companies," Elena began. "He became obsessed."
"With exposing them?" Vincent asked.
"At first."
"And later?"
"With money."
Elena wiped her eyes.
"He realized the archive was worth more than justice."
Vincent understood.
"Blackmail."
She nodded.
"Daniel contacted people. He threatened them. One was Adrian Cole."
"The fixer."
"Yes."
"What happened the night Daniel died?"
Elena's voice shook.
"He was drunk. Angry. He said we were leaving the country. I refused."
"Lily?"
"She wasn't born yet."
Vincent remembered.
"And then?"
"He hit me."
Rose's eyes hardened.
Elena continued.
"He had never done it before. I fell. He came toward me again. There was a gun on the table."
"You shot him."
"No."
Vincent waited.
"He grabbed it."
Elena swallowed.
"We fought. It fired."
"Accident?"
"Yes."
"Then why call it murder?"
"Because I panicked."
Rose said softly, "You called me."
Elena nodded.
"Rose helped me."
"What did you do?" Vincent asked.
Elena looked ashamed.
"We staged the robbery."
Vincent exhaled.
Not murder.
But concealment.
Rebecca could weaponize it.
Especially with falsified evidence.
"Do you have proof?"
"The original gun was destroyed."
"Any recording?"
Elena looked toward Rose.
Rose shook her head.
"I never knew Daniel had cameras."
"Did he?"
"Maybe."
Vincent thought of Thomas's archive.
Men like Daniel recorded leverage.
"Find his backups."
Marco searched remotely.
Twenty minutes later, he found an old cloud account connected to Daniel Carter.
Password protected.
Elena knew the likely password.
LILY.
Account opened.
Videos.
Dozens.
One from the night Daniel died.
Vincent hesitated.
"You don't have to watch."
Elena shook her head.
"Do it."
Video showed exactly what she described.
Argument.
Daniel striking Elena.
Gun.
Struggle.
Shot.
Accident.
Then Elena collapsing beside him.
Enough to clear murder.
Vincent copied it to multiple secure locations.
"Rebecca loses that weapon."
Elena breathed again.
But Rose looked worried.
"What?"
Vincent asked.
"Rebecca knew the file existed."
"So?"
"How?"
Vincent realized.
She had archive access.
Or someone was feeding her.
His phone buzzed.
Giovanni.
VIDEO CALL.
Vincent answered.
His grandfather sat in a dark room.
Carlo and Victoria behind him.
Still bound.
"Grandson."
"You're running out of relatives to kidnap."
Giovanni smiled.
"You found Lily."
"Yes."
"Good."
That answer bothered Vincent.
"You wanted her safe?"
"I never instructed Thomas to harm her."
"You instructed him to take her."
"Same difference in this family."
Vincent's jaw tightened.
"What do you want now?"
"Rose."
Rose stepped into frame.
Giovanni's face softened.
"My daughter."
Rose looked sick.
"Don't call me that."
"It is true."
"Biology isn't parenthood."
"A sentimental idea."
"Coming from you, I'll take that as confirmation."
Giovanni looked at Vincent.
"The archive releases at sunrise."
"Why?"
"Because this city deserves to burn."
"No."
"You think you can inherit my power while pretending your hands are cleaner?"
"I don't want your power."
Giovanni laughed.
"Every man says that before he owns it."
Vincent leaned toward the camera.
"Release Carlo and Victoria."
"Bring Rose."
"Again?"
"This time alone."
Rose shook her head.
Vincent ignored her.
"Location."
Giovanni smiled.
"Our beginning."
The call ended.
Vincent knew.
The old Moretti mansion.
Abandoned after his grandmother's death.
Rose said, "I'm going."
Vincent answered, "We both are."
"No."
"Not discussing it."
Elena said, "What about the archive?"
Vincent looked at the clock.
4:38 a.m.
Sunrise around 6:45.
Two hours.
"Marco handles the servers."
Rose shook her head.
"There's a physical release key."
"Where?"
"Giovanni has it."
"Then we take it."
They drove.
The old Moretti mansion stood empty on ten acres.
Vincent remembered childhood visits.
Giovanni's study.
The smell of cigars.
The fear adults tried to hide.
They entered.
No guards.
Upstairs, music played.
A record from Vincent's childhood.
Giovanni waited in the master bedroom.
Carlo and Victoria sat nearby, free now.
Vincent frowned.
"What is this?"
Giovanni smiled.
"A confession."
Carlo looked at Vincent.
"I'm sorry."
"For what?"
Carlo stood.
"Rose's disappearance."
Vincent's stomach tightened.
Carlo continued.
"Thomas didn't order it."
"We know."
"Giovanni didn't either."
Rose stared.
"What?"
Victoria closed her eyes.
Carlo looked at her.
"Tell them."
Victoria began crying.
Vincent felt the world tilt again.
"Mother?"
She looked at Rose.
"I did."
Rose stepped back.
"You?"
Victoria nodded.
"I arranged the warehouse."
"Why?"
"Because Giovanni told me who you really were."
Rose's voice broke.
"His daughter."
"Yes."
"And?"
Victoria sobbed.
"I thought he would take Vincent too. I thought he would destroy us."
"So you tried to kill me?"
"No! I tried to fake your death."
Rose stared.
"Without telling me."
"I was going to get you out."
"But something went wrong."
"Thomas found out."
Giovanni watched them as if attending theater.
Vincent wanted to kill him.
"You engineered all of this."
Giovanni shrugged.
"I encouraged honesty."
"You're releasing the archive."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because once truth is public, no one controls it."
"People will die."
"People always die."
Vincent stepped toward him.
"Not today."
Giovanni lifted a small device.
Release key.
"Six forty-five."
Rose moved.
Giovanni pressed a button.
A red light began blinking.
"Dead man's trigger," he said.
Vincent froze.
"If my pulse stops, the files release instantly."
"Of course."
Giovanni smiled.
"You cannot shoot your way out."
Vincent's phone vibrated.
Marco.
We found the release server.
Can't stop it remotely.
Need physical key.
Vincent looked at Giovanni's hand.
Then Carlo suddenly moved.
He struck Giovanni's wrist.
The device flew.
Vincent lunged.
Victoria screamed.
Rose grabbed the key first.
The red light changed.
Green.
Then the bedroom door slammed shut.
Automatic locks engaged.
Smoke began seeping from vents.
Giovanni smiled.
May you like
"Now let's see which family member you save first."
And the room filled with gas.
