Chapter 12 - Elena Carter's Real Name

Elena did not run.

That mattered.

She stood beside the marina railing while everyone stared at her.

Vincent spoke first.

"Who are you?"

"My name is Elena Carter."

"Rebecca disagrees."

"Rebecca lies."

"So does everyone."

Pain crossed Elena's face.

Fair.

"My birth name was Elena Vale."

Rose inhaled sharply.

"Vale?"

Elena nodded.

"Margaret Vale was my aunt."

Vincent connected it.

Margaret—Rose's biological mother.

Rebecca/Claire—Margaret's younger sister.

Elena—

"Claire's daughter?" he asked.

Elena closed her eyes.

"Yes."

Vincent stared.

Rebecca was Elena's mother.

Lily's grandmother.

The kidnapping, manipulation, threats—all inside another family.

"Does she know?"

"She always knew."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because my mother abandoned me when I was six."

Elena explained.

Claire Vale disappeared into Giovanni's network.

Elena grew up with relatives.

Changed her surname after marriage.

Years later Claire reappeared as Rebecca Shaw.

Successful attorney.

Polished.

Powerful.

Wanted reconciliation.

Elena refused.

Then Daniel discovered the archive.

Claire inserted herself.

"She didn't care about me," Elena said. "She cared about access."

"And Lily?"

Elena's voice cracked.

"She called Lily her inheritance."

Vincent's anger sharpened.

"Why work at my estate?"

"To stop her."

That surprised him.

"Rose contacted you."

"Yes, but I was also watching Claire."

Rose looked at Elena.

"You never told me."

"I didn't trust anyone completely."

Rose almost laughed.

"Apparently that's hereditary."

Vincent looked at the timer on his phone.

Forty-three minutes.

"We finish this later."

They drove downtown.

The Moretti offices occupied the top six floors of a financial building.

Rebecca had disabled elevators.

They took stairs.

Thirty-six floors.

Federal agents entered lower levels.

Marco led another team.

Vincent and Rose reached the family office with twenty minutes left.

Door open.

Rebecca sat at Thomas's old desk.

Terminal glowing.

"Welcome."

Vincent entered.

"Stop the transfer."

"No."

Elena stepped behind him.

Rebecca smiled.

"Hello, sweetheart."

Elena's face hardened.

"Don't."

"I missed you."

"You threatened my daughter."

"I protected her."

"You kidnapped her."

"Others did."

"You ordered them."

Rebecca sighed.

"History gets messy."

Vincent said, "Cancel it."

She looked at him.

"Do you know how much money Giovanni hid?"

"I don't care."

"Eight point four billion."

Rose whistled softly despite herself.

Rebecca smiled.

"Exactly."

Vincent remained still.

"You think I want it?"

"Everyone wants it."

"No."

"Then why build an empire?"

"I inherited one."

"And kept it."

That landed.

Vincent knew it.

He had told himself he ran the Moretti organization differently.

Less violence.

No narcotics.

No trafficking.

No civilians.

But power funded by old crimes was still power.

Rebecca leaned forward.

"You can stop pretending."

Timer: 16:02.

"What happens when transfer completes?"

"Funds scatter across accounts I control."

"And Level Two identities?"

"Deleted."

Rose said, "You can't."

"I can."

"Those records can protect children."

"They can also expose them."

Vincent considered.

Rebecca had a point.

Raw release was dangerous.

But total destruction erased evidence.

"What do you want?" he asked.

"Protection."

"For what?"

"My work."

"Which includes kidnapping."

Rebecca smiled faintly.

"Details."

Elena stepped forward.

"You want him to give you immunity."

"I want everyone to walk away."

Vincent laughed.

"No."

Rebecca's smile faded.

"You have twelve minutes."

"Then take the money."

Everyone stared.

Rebecca did too.

"What?"

Vincent repeated.

"Take it."

Rose turned.

"Vincent."

He continued.

"Eight billion. Take it."

Rebecca narrowed her eyes.

"No conditions?"

"One."

"There it is."

"Leave Level Two untouched."

Rebecca studied him.

"Why?"

"Because those children deserve protection and evidence deserves lawful handling."

"You sound like a prosecutor."

"I'm learning."

"And Lily?"

"You never speak her name again."

Rebecca smiled.

"Deal."

Elena stared at him.

"Vincent—"

He lifted one hand.

Rebecca typed.

Timer disappeared.

Funds began transferring.

Rose looked furious.

"You're letting her steal billions."

Vincent whispered, "Watch."

Rebecca heard.

Too late.

Screen flashed.

TRANSFER FAILED.

ACCOUNT FROZEN.

Her face changed.

Vincent smiled.

"Eight billion dollars moving at once creates attention."

"What did you do?"

"Called federal financial crimes thirty minutes ago."

Rebecca stood.

Gun appeared in her hand.

Elena gasped.

Vincent moved between them.

Rebecca pointed at him.

"You think you've won?"

"No."

"Good."

She turned the gun toward Elena.

Vincent's body went cold.

Rebecca's own daughter.

"Mom," Elena whispered.

Rebecca flinched.

First real emotion.

Elena took one step.

"You don't have to do this."

"Stay back."

"You left me."

Rebecca's hand trembled.

"I had reasons."

"You always have reasons."

"I was trying to survive."

"So was I."

The gun lowered half an inch.

Elena continued.

"Lily doesn't know what you are."

Rebecca's eyes filled.

"She could."

"No."

"Elena—"

"Not until you choose to become someone she can safely know."

Rebecca's face broke.

For one second Vincent thought she would surrender.

Then alarms sounded.

A side door opened.

Thomas stepped inside.

He had a gun pointed at Rebecca.

"Drop it, Claire."

Vincent stared.

"Dad."

Thomas looked at him.

"Long story."

Rebecca laughed bitterly.

"Everyone's alive tonight."

Thomas ignored her.

"Drop the gun."

Rebecca did.

Federal agents entered seconds later.

They arrested her.

Elena watched her mother being led away.

No triumph.

Only grief.

Thomas remained.

Vincent looked at him.

"You don't leave."

Thomas nodded.

"I know."

"You go with them too."

"I know."

Rose entered slowly.

Father and daughter looked at each other.

No embrace.

No forgiveness.

Thomas said, "I'm sorry."

Rose's eyes filled.

"Not enough."

"I know."

He surrendered.

As agents escorted him away, he stopped beside Vincent.

"One thing."

Vincent waited.

"Giovanni has a final archive."

"Where?"

Thomas looked toward the ceiling.

"Not where."

Vincent frowned.

"What?"

"Who."

Then Thomas was taken away.

Vincent looked at Rose.

She understood the same terrible implication.

The final archive wasn't stored in a machine.

Someone carried it.

A person.

And before either sibling could speak, Vincent's phone buzzed with a message from Giovanni's detention center.
