Chapter 14 - The Man Who Started It

Elena sat down when she saw the handwriting.

"No."

Vincent placed the photograph on the table.

"You recognize it?"

She nodded.

"Daniel."

Rose looked at her.

"The video showed his shooting."

"I saw him die."

Vincent thought of every false death in the story.

He almost laughed.

"Did you see his body afterward?"

Elena hesitated.

"Rose took me away."

Rose's face changed.

Vincent turned.

"What?"

"I returned later."

"And?"

"The body was gone."

Elena stood.

"You told me police took him."

"I lied."

"Why?"

"Because Adrian Cole was there."

Vincent rubbed his temples.

"Of course Adrian Cole was there."

Rose explained.

Cole had taken Daniel's body—or apparently wounded body.

Later he told Rose Daniel died before reaching a doctor.

Nobody verified it.

Vincent called Marco.

"Find Adrian Cole."

They did.

Not in hiding.

In a hospice center.

Cancer.

Weeks left.

Vincent visited that night.

Cole looked fragile.

Still dangerous in the eyes.

"You took Daniel Carter."

Cole smiled.

"Took you long enough."

"He's alive?"

"Was."

"Where?"

"Depends when you're asking."

Vincent placed the photograph down.

"This arrived today."

Cole's expression changed.

"He sent that?"

"You tell me."

Cole looked toward the window.

"Daniel survived the gunshot."

"Why hide him?"

"Giovanni wanted him."

"So you saved him."

"Not exactly."

Cole kept Daniel hidden because Daniel held information Cole could use against Giovanni.

Daniel recovered.

Then vanished.

"Last time you saw him?"

"Five years ago."

"Why photograph Lily?"

Cole shook his head.

"Daniel wouldn't threaten his daughter."

"He watched her hide."

"Maybe."

"Why?"

Cole looked at Vincent.

"Because he knew what was coming."

"What?"

"Rebecca."

Vincent leaned closer.

"Explain."

"Daniel discovered Claire Vale before Rose did. He learned she planned to enter your life as Rebecca Shaw."

"Why not warn Elena?"

"He tried."

"How?"

"Messages intercepted."

Same pattern.

Cole coughed.

Then whispered:

"Daniel set the first domino."

"What first domino?"

"He told Lily where to hide."

Vincent froze.

"What?"

"The day behind the trash cans. Daniel was nearby."

Vincent thought back.

Lily said Mommy told her to hide.

Not Daniel.

Cole continued.

"He anonymously warned Elena that someone was coming. Elena told Lily to run. Daniel watched from distance to make sure the child reached the alley."

"Then why not help her?"

"Because if he appeared, Claire would know he was alive."

Vincent hated it.

But it made sense.

"He wanted me to find Lily."

"Yes."

"Why me?"

Cole smiled weakly.

"Because Daniel spent years studying your family."

"And?"

"He decided you were the first Moretti in three generations who might choose the child over the empire."

Vincent looked down.

That was the test.

A crying child behind trash cans.

A powerful man late for a meeting.

Would he stop?

Daniel had gambled everything on yes.

"Where is he?"

Cole whispered an address.

A lakeside cabin.

Two hours away.

Vincent went with Elena.

No guards visible.

Marco followed at distance anyway.

The cabin door opened before they knocked.

Daniel Carter stood there.

Older.

A scar near his chest.

Alive.

Elena stopped breathing.

Daniel looked at her.

"Hi, Ellie."

She slapped him.

Hard.

He accepted it.

Then she slapped him again.

Also fair.

"You let me think you were dead."

"I know."

"You let Lily think you were dead."

"I know."

"You watched us?"

"From far away."

"That's not an excuse."

"No."

Elena cried.

Daniel did too.

Vincent stayed silent.

Eventually Daniel looked at him.

"You stopped."

Vincent knew what he meant.

"The alley."

Daniel nodded.

"I wasn't sure you would."

"So you risked your daughter."

"I had no choice."

"You always have a choice."

Daniel accepted that.

"You're right."

Inside, he explained everything.

He survived.

Cole hid him.

Daniel spent years collecting evidence.

He couldn't return because Claire monitored Elena.

He believed revealing himself would get them killed.

"So instead you manipulated events."

"Yes."

"Like a Moretti."

Daniel winced.

"Yes."

Vincent disliked him.

But not for surviving.

For believing his intentions excused taking choices away from people.

The same disease everyone in this story shared.

Protection without consent.

Secrets for someone's own good.

Vincent was done with it.

"You tell Lily yourself."

Daniel looked terrified.

"She thinks I'm dead."

"Then you tell her why."

Elena said, "Not yet."

Vincent looked at her.

She was right.

Lily needed preparation.

Professional help.

Time.

Daniel nodded.

"I'll wait."

"You'll do more than wait," Elena said. "You'll earn the right."

Daniel agreed.

Vincent respected her in that moment more than ever.

They left near dawn.

On the drive home, Elena stared out the window.

"You knew he might be alive before we entered?"

Vincent nodded.

"And you didn't tell me."

"I wanted confirmation."

She turned toward him.

"Don't."

He understood immediately.

Same mistake.

Protective secrecy.

He had done it too.

"You're right."

Elena studied him.

"I'm tired of men deciding what truth I can handle."

"You should be."

He pulled the car over.

Elena looked confused.

Vincent faced her.

"From now on, if I know something affecting you or Lily, I tell you."

"Even if it's ugly?"

"Especially then."

"Even if you think you're protecting us?"

"Yes."

She watched him.

"That's harder than fighting people."

"Much."

For the first time, she smiled.

Then she leaned forward and kissed him.

Brief.

Unexpected.

Vincent froze.

Elena pulled back.

"Don't make it weird."

"I'm trying."

"You look terrified."

"I've had guns pointed at me with less warning."

She laughed.

They continued home.

For several hours, everything felt possible.

Until Marco called.

"Vincent."

"What?"

"Giovanni was transferred last night."

"Why?"

"Medical emergency."

"And?"

"He never reached the hospital."

Vincent's jaw tightened.

"Escaped?"

"Someone took the transport."

"Who?"

"We found the driver."

"And?"

"He had one message."

Vincent waited.

Marco said:

"Giovanni wants Lily brought to the old estate before sunset."

Vincent looked at Elena.

The final shadow had returned.

"And if we don't?"

Marco was silent.

May you like

Then:

"He says he's holding Daniel Carter."
