Chapter 4 - The Room Beneath The Vault

The whisper came from the darkness.
"Alexander..."
Every person inside the underground study froze.
The hidden door behind the vault remained half-open.
A narrow passage stretched beyond it.
No lights.
No movement.
Just darkness.
But someone was there.
Someone who knew his name.
Alexander raised his hand.
The bodyguards immediately stopped.
His eyes remained fixed on the opening.
He had spent his entire life walking into dangerous rooms.
He had built his empire by entering places where other men were too afraid to go.
But this was different.
Because this room had been hidden by his father.
And whatever waited inside had been waiting for him.
"Who is there?"
His voice echoed through the passage.
No answer.
Only silence.
Then a small sound.
A slow breath.
Alexander's expression changed.
Not fear.
Recognition.
Someone was alive down there.
Luca stepped closer.
"Matteo never told me about this."
Alexander looked at him.
"You expect me to believe that?"
Luca didn't react.
"I knew your father had secrets."
He looked into the darkness.
"But this..."
He shook his head.
"This was something even I didn't know."
Elena stood beside the vault, staring into the hidden room.
Her hand moved toward the metal fragment she carried.
The one with Matteo's symbol.
"What is it?" Alexander asked.
She didn't answer.
"Elena."
Her eyes remained locked on the passage.
"My mother said there was a place beneath the vault."
Alexander turned toward her.
"And you forgot to mention that?"
"I didn't know if it was real."
"You knew enough to open it."
Her face tightened.
"I knew enough to be afraid."
That answer made him pause.
Because Elena Marlow had never seemed afraid of him.
Not once.
But now she was afraid of what was behind that door.
Alexander stepped forward.
Luca grabbed his arm.
A mistake.
A dangerous mistake.
Everyone in the room immediately reacted.
Alexander looked down at Luca's hand.
Then at his face.
"Don't."
Luca slowly released him.
"I'm trying to keep you alive."
Alexander gave a cold smile.
"People always say that right before they try to control me."
"Your father said the same thing."
That stopped him.
Alexander looked at Luca.
"What did you say?"
Luca looked away.
"Matteo was stubborn."
A pause.
"He believed protecting someone meant making them hate him."
Alexander felt the words hit harder than he expected.
Because they sounded familiar.
Too familiar.
His entire childhood had been filled with unanswered questions.
Why did his father disappear for days?
Why did Matteo keep secrets from his own family?
Why did he push Alexander away?
Alexander had spent fifteen years believing his father abandoned him.
But now another possibility appeared.
Maybe Matteo had been running from something.
Maybe he had been protecting him.
Or maybe everyone was lying.
The only thing Alexander knew was that he hated not knowing.
He entered the hidden passage.
Immediately, the bodyguards followed.
Elena and Luca walked behind him.
The door slowly closed after they passed through.
The hidden room was nothing like the study above.
The walls were covered with old photographs.
Documents.
Maps.
Names.
Alexander stopped.
Because the first photograph he saw was impossible.
It showed Matteo Romano.
A younger Matteo.
Standing beside two boys.
One was Alexander.
The other was Luca.
But the date written below the picture was what shocked him.
Alexander was only six years old.
Luca was already an adult.
He turned.
"You weren't my brother's age."
Luca nodded.
"No."
"Then explain."
Luca looked at the photograph.
"I was never your father's son."
Alexander stared.
The room became silent.
"What?"
Luca looked at him.
"I was his first mistake."
Nobody spoke.
"I was taken in by Matteo when I was seventeen. He trained me. He protected me. He gave me a place in his family."
Alexander looked back at the picture.
"So why was your name hidden?"
"Because someone wanted me erased."
"Who?"
Luca's expression darkened.
"The same person who tried to kill your father."
A cold silence followed.
Alexander looked around the room.
The walls suddenly made sense.
The photographs.
The documents.
The hidden records.
This wasn't a treasure room.
It was an evidence room.
His father had been collecting proof.
Against someone.
"Who was he fighting?"
Luca walked toward a large file cabinet.
"Your father discovered that someone inside his organization had been selling information."
Alexander frowned.
"Someone close."
Luca nodded.
"Very close."
Elena walked toward the wall.
She stopped beside a photograph.
Alexander noticed.
"What?"
She touched the picture.
Her eyes filled with sadness.
"My mother."
Alexander moved closer.
The photograph showed Matteo.
Luca.
And a young woman.
Clara Marlow.
But there was something else.
A small child standing beside her.
Alexander looked closer.
His heart stopped.
The child was Elena.
"You were here."
She nodded.
"I was eight."
Alexander looked at her.
"You knew my father."
"I knew the man behind the rumors."
"And?"
She looked at him.
"He wasn't the monster people described."
Alexander looked away.
He didn't want to hear that.
Because forgiving Matteo felt impossible.
But hating him was becoming harder.
Luca opened the file cabinet.
Inside were dozens of folders.
One was labeled:
ROMANO FAMILY — FINAL PROTECTION PLAN.
Alexander reached for it.
Before he touched it, the lights turned on.
A hidden projector activated.
A video appeared on the wall.
Matteo Romano.
Older.
Tired.
Sitting behind a desk.
Alexander stopped breathing.
His father looked directly into the camera.
"Alexander."
His voice filled the room.
"If you are watching this, then I failed."
Alexander stared.
The man he had spent fifteen years trying to forget was suddenly standing in front of him.
Alive.
Even if only in a recording.
Matteo continued.
"I know you will hate me."
Alexander's jaw tightened.
"You have every right."
The video flickered.
"I wanted to tell you the truth."
A pause.
"But if you knew the truth, they would come for you."
Alexander stepped closer.
The recording continued.
"Someone in this family betrayed me."
Luca looked down.
Elena became still.
"And the person who betrayed me was someone you trusted."
The screen distorted.
Then Matteo looked directly into the camera.
Almost like he knew Alexander would be watching.
"Alexander, listen carefully."
The room went silent.
"The person who destroyed our family is not outside these walls."
Alexander felt a chill.
"They are already inside."
The recording stopped.
Nobody moved.
Then a sound came from above.
A security alarm.
Not the mansion alarm.
A private one.
One that only Alexander knew existed.
His face changed.
"Someone entered the house."
The bodyguards checked their weapons.
Luca looked toward the ceiling.
"How?"
Alexander didn't answer.
Because there was only one person who could bypass his security system.
Someone with access to every hidden code.
Someone who knew the mansion better than anyone.
Elena noticed his expression.
"Who?"
Alexander looked at the monitor connected to the mansion cameras.
A figure appeared in the entrance hall.
Standing alone.
Waiting.
Alexander moved closer.
The camera zoomed in.
And the person slowly removed their coat.
Elena gasped.
Because she recognized the face.
A face she thought belonged only to the past.
A face that should have been impossible.
The screen showed the person looking directly into the camera.
Then the mansion intercom activated.
A voice filled the underground room.
"Alexander..."
The voice paused.
"I know you found the vault."
Alexander stared at the screen.
May you like
Because the person speaking was the last person he expected to hear.
His mother.
