Chapter 2 - The Message Hidden Inside The Vault

"Alexander, if you are reading this, it means Elena Marlow has finally found you."

The words stared back at him.

For several seconds, nobody in the underground study moved.

Nobody breathed.

Nobody dared interrupt the billionaire who had built an empire by making other men afraid.

Alexander Romano stood frozen in front of the open vault, staring at the handwriting he had not seen in fifteen years.

His father's handwriting.

The same sharp, controlled letters that had once appeared on contracts, private notes, and the few childhood birthday cards Matteo Romano had left behind.

But there was one thing Alexander couldn't understand.

Why was Elena's name written beside his?

He slowly turned his head.

The maid stood several feet away from him.

Her face had lost all color.

She looked at the message like she had been waiting her entire life to see those words.

"You knew."

Alexander's voice was quiet.

That made it more dangerous.

Elena didn't answer.

"You knew my father left something inside this vault."

Her fingers tightened around the old metal fragment.

"I knew there was a possibility."

"A possibility?"

Alexander stepped closer.

"You walked into my private study carrying a cleaning bucket, looked at a vault that destroyed the careers of twenty-five experts, and opened it in less than a minute."

The bodyguards watched silently.

They knew their boss.

They knew when anger was coming.

But this wasn't anger.

Not yet.

This was something worse.

A man discovering that someone had been holding a piece of his past without his permission.

"Tell me the truth," Alexander said.

Elena looked at the open vault.

"I don't know everything."

"Then tell me what you do know."

She hesitated.

That hesitation was enough to make Alexander furious.

"You don't get to hesitate anymore."

Elena looked at him.

"I was a child when I first saw that symbol."

The room went silent.

Alexander stopped.

"A child?"

She nodded slowly.

"My mother worked for your father."

The words hit harder than he expected.

"My father didn't have employees who stayed hidden."

"Not everyone who worked for him was supposed to be seen."

Alexander stared at her.

The answer bothered him because it sounded exactly like something Matteo would have done.

His father had always lived behind layers of secrets.

Private meetings.

Hidden accounts.

People whose names never appeared in official records.

People who existed only when Matteo Romano needed them.

"Who was your mother?"

Elena looked down.

"Her name was Clara Marlow."

Alexander searched his memory.

Nothing.

That annoyed him.

Because Alexander remembered everything important.

"I don't know that name."

"You weren't supposed to."

A cold feeling moved through him.

"What does that mean?"

Elena didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she walked toward the vault.

Slowly.

Like she was afraid of what she would find.

"My mother told me never to come near this place."

Alexander followed her.

"Yet you opened it."

"Because she also told me that one day, someone would need to know the truth."

"Who?"

Elena looked at him.

"You."

The answer was simple.

Too simple.

Alexander looked back at the message.

The paper inside the vault was protected inside a thin glass container.

Ancient.

Carefully preserved.

Matteo had planned this.

He had planned for someone to find it.

And somehow, that someone was Elena.

Alexander reached toward the container.

Before his fingers touched it, Elena spoke.

"Wait."

His hand stopped.

Nobody stopped Alexander Romano.

Nobody.

But something in her voice made him listen.

"What?"

"There is a reason your father waited fifteen years."

Alexander's eyes narrowed.

"You know why?"

"I know what my mother told me."

"And?"

Elena looked at the vault.

"The first message is not the truth."

Alexander frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"It means your father expected you to find this."

She pointed at the paper.

"But he also expected someone else to be watching."

A small sound came from one of the bodyguards.

Everyone turned.

The oldest guard looked toward the security monitor.

His expression changed.

"Boss."

Alexander immediately looked over.

The screens displayed the mansion's security cameras.

The underground study was supposed to be impossible to access.

No one knew the vault had opened.

No one knew Elena was inside.

But one camera showed movement.

A figure standing in the hallway outside.

Alexander's face hardened.

"Who is that?"

The guard zoomed in.

The image became clearer.

A man.

Older.

Wearing a dark coat.

Standing perfectly still.

Waiting.

Alexander didn't recognize him.

But Elena did.

The moment she saw the face, she stepped back.

Her breathing changed.

Not much.

Just enough.

Alexander noticed.

"You know him."

Elena whispered.

"No."

A lie.

A terrible one.

Alexander walked toward her.

"Elena."

She looked at him.

The fear in her eyes was no longer hidden.

"That's impossible."

"Who is he?"

She stared at the monitor.

Then at the vault.

Then back at Alexander.

"My mother said he was dead."

The room became colder.

Alexander looked toward the screen again.

The man outside the study slowly raised his hand.

And knocked.

Three times.

Slow.

Precise.

Like he knew exactly who was inside.

The bodyguards moved instantly.

Weapons drawn.

Alexander didn't move.

He was focused on Elena.

Because she wasn't looking at the door.

She was looking at the old metal fragment in her hand.

The one with his father's symbol.

The one she had carried for years.

"Elena."

Her eyes filled with fear.

"What?"

She slowly turned the fragment over.

Alexander watched.

Because there was something on the back.

Something that had been hidden from him.

A small engraving.

A name.

Not Matteo Romano.

Not Clara Marlow.

Another name.

A name Alexander had spent fifteen years believing was impossible.

The hallway door handle moved.

Someone outside was opening it.

Elena whispered the name.

May you like

And Alexander heard it.

"Your brother is alive..."
