Chapter 3 - The Brother Who Was Erased

"Your brother is alive..."

The words remained in the room long after Elena said them.

Alexander Romano had heard threats from men holding weapons.

He had heard enemies promise revenge.

He had heard people lie directly to his face.

But nothing had ever made his body react the way those four words did.

His brother.

Alive.

Impossible.

The hallway door continued moving.

The old hinges made a slow metallic sound.

Everyone in the underground study prepared for violence.

The bodyguards raised their weapons.

Alexander stood completely still.

His eyes never left Elena.

"Explain."

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

Elena swallowed.

"I don't know everything."

Alexander's expression hardened.

"You keep saying that."

"Because it's true."

"You expect me to believe my father had another son, hidden from me for fifteen years, and you just happened to know?"

"No."

"Then tell me why."

Before Elena could answer, the door opened.

Everyone turned.

The man from the security monitor stepped inside.

He was older than Alexander expected.

Late sixties.

Gray hair.

A tired face.

A long scar crossing his left cheek.

But there was something familiar about him.

Something that made Alexander uncomfortable.

The stranger looked around the room.

His eyes stopped on the open vault.

Then they moved to Elena.

"You opened it."

Elena said nothing.

Alexander stepped forward.

"Who are you?"

The stranger looked at him.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then the man smiled sadly.

"Your father really did raise you to look exactly like him."

Alexander's jaw tightened.

"I asked who you are."

The man's eyes lowered.

"My name was Luca Romano."

The room froze.

One of the bodyguards immediately looked at Alexander.

Nobody needed to explain what that name meant.

Luca Romano.

A name that existed only in old photographs.

A name that disappeared from every record connected to the Romano family.

A name Alexander had never been allowed to ask about.

Alexander stared at the man.

"No."

Luca didn't react.

"I expected you to say that."

"My brother died."

The words came out colder than Alexander intended.

Luca looked away.

"That's what you were told."

Alexander felt something inside him crack.

Not emotionally.

Something deeper.

Something built from years of certainty.

"My father told me."

"Your father lied."

The room became silent.

Alexander moved closer.

"You don't get to walk into my house and say that."

"I didn't come here to hurt you."

"Then why did you come?"

Luca looked at the vault.

"Because Matteo knew the truth would eventually find its way back."

Alexander followed his eyes.

The vault.

The message.

Elena.

Everything connected.

But the more pieces he found, the less sense anything made.

"Start talking."

Luca sighed.

"Your father had enemies."

Alexander almost laughed.

"That's your explanation?"

"No."

Luca looked directly at him.

"Your father had enemies who were not afraid of him."

That changed the atmosphere.

Alexander knew what fear looked like.

He had spent his entire adult life creating it.

But Matteo Romano?

Very few people had ever made that man cautious.

"Who?"

Luca didn't answer.

Instead, he looked at Elena.

"Did your mother tell you about the night she disappeared?"

Elena froze.

Alexander noticed.

"You knew her?"

Luca nodded.

"Clara was one of the few people your father trusted."

"She was my mother's employee."

"No."

Luca's answer was immediate.

"She was protecting you."

Alexander stared.

"Protecting me from what?"

Luca looked at the open vault.

"From the same people who wanted me erased."

The words made Alexander uncomfortable.

Because suddenly, the vault was no longer about money.

It wasn't about power.

It was about survival.

Elena stepped forward.

"My mother said Matteo Romano wasn't the monster everyone believed."

Alexander looked at her.

"What?"

"She said your father did terrible things."

The room stayed quiet.

"But she also said there were things he did to protect people."

Alexander looked away.

He hated that sentence.

Because part of him wanted to believe it.

The other part remembered every empty night waiting for a father who never came home.

"You don't know my father."

Elena's expression softened.

"Maybe not."

A pause.

"But I know what he tried to leave behind."

Alexander looked back at Luca.

"Why now?"

Luca looked toward the vault.

"Because someone else knows it opened."

As if the words summoned something, the lights flickered.

Every screen in the room went black.

The bodyguards immediately turned toward the security system.

"Boss."

Alexander looked at the monitors.

A single message appeared.

White letters.

No sender.

No location.

Just six words.

THE VAULT SHOULD HAVE STAYED CLOSED.

The temperature in the room seemed to drop.

Alexander stared at the message.

Nobody had access to this system.

Nobody.

Except someone who knew the mansion better than anyone.

Someone who understood Matteo Romano's security.

Someone who had been waiting.

Luca stepped back.

His face changed.

"What?"

Alexander noticed.

"You know who sent that."

Luca didn't answer.

"Who?"

The older man looked toward the door.

"Someone who was there the night your father disappeared."

Alexander's hand slowly closed into a fist.

"Who?"

Before Luca could answer, another sound came from the security system.

A new message appeared.

This time only three words.

LOOK BEHIND YOU.

Everyone turned.

Nothing.

Only the vault.

The open compartment.

The hidden documents.

Alexander looked back.

A small piece of paper had fallen from inside the vault.

Nobody noticed it before.

He picked it up.

The paper was old.

Yellowed.

The handwriting belonged to Matteo.

But this message was different.

Short.

Written quickly.

Almost like his father had no time left.

Alexander read it silently.

Then his expression changed.

Elena noticed first.

"What does it say?"

Alexander didn't respond.

"Alexander?"

Slowly, he lifted his eyes.

The message contained only one sentence.

Do not trust the person who opened the vault.

Everyone looked at Elena.

The room changed instantly.

The woman who had revealed the truth became the person everyone questioned.

Elena stepped back.

"No."

Alexander stared at her.

For the first time since she entered the room, he didn't know what to believe.

Because his father's final warning had been clear.

The person who opened the vault was dangerous.

And Elena Marlow was the only person who could open it.

Luca suddenly moved.

Not toward Alexander.

Toward Elena.

"Wait."

Everyone aimed their weapons.

Luca's eyes were fixed on the paper.

"That's not the complete message."

Alexander looked at him.

"What?"

Luca's face became pale.

"Matteo always wrote a second line."

He stepped closer.

"The first line was meant to be found by enemies."

Alexander looked down at the paper again.

His heart began beating faster.

Because beneath the sentence he had just read, hidden under the fold, there was another line.

A line nobody had noticed.

A line written in a different ink.

A line that appeared only when the paper touched the light.

Alexander unfolded it.

And saw the words his father had hidden underneath.

The person who opened the vault is the only person you can trust.

The room went silent.

Alexander looked at Elena.

Elena looked at him.

Then every light in the underground study suddenly turned off.

A heavy sound came from behind the vault.

May you like

A hidden door inside the wall began opening.

And from the darkness beyond it, someone whispered Alexander's name.
