Chapter 6 - The Man Behind The Betrayal

The door handle moved.
Slowly.
Everyone in the room froze.
Daniel Kwan stepped in front of me immediately.
My mother grabbed my arm.
The security room suddenly felt smaller.
More dangerous.
The voice outside spoke again.
“Harper.”
I knew that voice.
I had heard it thousands of times.
A voice from my childhood.
A voice that used to tell me everything would be okay.
A voice that belonged to the person who raised me after my father disappeared.
My uncle.
Thomas Williams.
The man my mother trusted.
The man who became my family.
The man whose name was written inside the file Daniel had been hiding.
My stomach dropped.
“No.”
The word escaped my mouth.
Daniel looked at me.
“You know him.”
I couldn’t answer.
Because I didn’t want to.
I wanted to believe I was wrong.
I wanted this nightmare to end.
But the door opened.
And Thomas walked inside.
Older.
Gray hair.
A familiar smile.
The same gentle expression he had shown me when I was a child.
“Harper.”
He looked at me like he was relieved.
Like he had been searching for me.
Then his eyes moved to Daniel.
And the smile disappeared.
“You finally told her.”
Daniel didn’t move.
“You shouldn’t be here.”
Thomas laughed softly.
“That’s exactly what your father said before everything fell apart.”
My heart stopped.
“You knew my father?”
Thomas looked at me.
Then sighed.
“Harper…”
I stepped back.
“Don’t.”
The word came out quietly.
But everyone heard it.
“I don’t want another person lying to me.”
Thomas’s expression changed.
For the first time, I saw something beneath the kindness.
Something colder.
“You think I lied to you?”
I stared at him.
“My entire life was built on lies.”
He looked away.
And that was enough.
I didn’t need another confession.
I already knew.
“You were there.”
Thomas looked at me.
“What?”
“The night my mother disappeared.”
Silence.
Daniel watched him carefully.
My mother covered her mouth.
Thomas didn’t answer.
He didn’t have to.
Because his silence was the truth.
“You raised me after destroying my family.”
His face hardened.
“Harper, you don’t understand.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“I understand perfectly.”
I looked at Daniel.
Then at my mother.
Then back at Thomas.
“Everyone kept saying they were protecting me.”
My voice cracked.
“But nobody protected me from the truth.”
Thomas took a step forward.
“I saved you.”
I almost laughed.
“Saved me?”
“Yes.”
His voice became stronger.
“Your father was going to get you killed.”
Daniel immediately interrupted.
“Don’t.”
Thomas looked at him.
“Still pretending you’re the hero?”
Daniel’s expression changed.
A flash of anger.
Real anger.
“You know what you did.”
Thomas smiled.
“I know exactly what I did.”
The room went silent.
My heart started racing.
Because he admitted it.
Not everything.
But enough.
“What did you do?”
I asked.
Thomas looked at me.
And for a moment, he looked almost sad.
“I gave you a chance to survive.”
I stared.
“You destroyed my family.”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“Your father destroyed your family.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“Stop lying.”
Thomas looked at him.
“You’re still protecting her?”
“Yes.”
A strange silence followed.
Because Daniel answered without hesitation.
Not as a mafia boss.
Not as a businessman.
Just as someone who cared.
Thomas noticed.
And he smiled.
“That’s your weakness, Daniel.”
My eyes moved to Daniel.
“What does that mean?”
Thomas walked slowly around the room.
“Daniel Kwan built an empire because he believed emotions made people weak.”
He looked at me.
“Then he met you.”
I didn’t understand.
Thomas continued.
“You were never just a maid.”
My breath caught.
“What?”
“You were the reason he changed.”
Daniel’s face darkened.
“Enough.”
“No.”
Thomas laughed.
“She deserves to know.”
He looked at me.
“Your mother asked Daniel to protect you because she knew something.”
“What?”
Thomas leaned closer.
“She knew Daniel was the only person powerful enough to stop me.”
The room went silent.
I looked at Daniel.
He didn’t deny it.
“Then why didn’t you?”
Daniel looked down.
Because the answer hurt.
“I tried.”
I waited.
He continued.
“But your father disappeared before I could reach him.”
Thomas smiled.
“And now you finally know.”
Daniel turned toward him.
“You were the one who took the recorder.”
Thomas said nothing.
My eyes widened.
“The recorder?”
Daniel looked at me.
“The evidence.”
Thomas shrugged.
“Yes.”
My voice became smaller.
“What was on it?”
Thomas looked at me.
Then smiled.
“Everything.”
He walked toward the security desk.
Daniel immediately moved.
“Don’t.”
Thomas stopped.
“You still don’t understand.”
He looked at me.
“Your father wasn’t trying to expose criminals.”
My stomach tightened.
“He was trying to expose people who controlled them.”
“Who?”
Thomas looked at Daniel.
Then back at me.
“The people above him.”
I felt overwhelmed.
Too many secrets.
Too many names.
Too many years stolen from me.
“I don’t care about any of this.”
Everyone looked at me.
“I want to know one thing.”
My voice shook.
“Why did my mother leave me?”
My mother started crying.
Thomas looked away.
Daniel closed his eyes.
Then my mother spoke.
“Because she thought she was going to die.”
The words broke me.
She walked closer.
“I was supposed to come back.”
Her tears fell.
“I was supposed to take you and disappear.”
“Then why didn’t you?”
She looked at Thomas.
And fear crossed her face.
“Because he found us.”
Thomas didn’t deny it.
The room became silent.
I looked at him.
“You found us.”
“Yes.”
The honesty shocked me.
“Why?”
Thomas stared at me.
“Because your father left something behind.”
“The recorder?”
“No.”
He looked at Daniel.
“The truth.”
Daniel’s phone suddenly rang.
Everyone stopped.
He checked the screen.
His expression changed.
“What?”
I watched him.
“What happened?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
He turned the phone toward us.
A live security feed appeared.
The mansion entrance.
A person was standing outside.
Another familiar face.
Someone I never expected to see.
Thomas looked at the screen.
For the first time…
he looked afraid.
“No.”
Daniel stared.
“Impossible.”
I looked between them.
“Who is that?”
Nobody answered.
The person outside stepped closer to the camera.
Then the security system recognized the face.
A name appeared on the screen.
A name that made my mother collapse.
May you like
Because the person standing at the door…
was my father.
