Chapter 1 - The Night The Maid Walked Away

A young maid stood beside a marble kitchen island, holding a small handbag and whispering:
“I have a date tonight.”
When mafia boss Daniel Kwan entered the kitchen, he found her old employee badge lying beside her coat.
On the back of the badge, three words were written:
“Remember who you are.”
Daniel suddenly realized this was not about a maid leaving for the evening.
I had cleaned Daniel Kwan’s mansion for almost three years.
I knew the sound of every door in that house.
I knew which hallway cameras turned slightly toward the east entrance.
I knew which glass Daniel preferred when he drank whiskey alone after midnight.
I knew when his footsteps meant anger and when they meant exhaustion.
But I never knew what it felt like to surprise him.
Not until that night.
The clock on the kitchen wall showed 8:17 p.m.
I had finished preparing dinner hours earlier. The staff had already disappeared into their rooms. The mansion was quiet in the way only expensive houses could be quiet.
Not peaceful.
Silent.
The kind of silence that reminded you someone powerful lived there.
I stood beside the marble island, folding my black coat carefully and placing my small handbag beside it.
For the first time in years, I was not thinking about Daniel Kwan.
I was thinking about myself.
That alone felt dangerous.
I checked my reflection in the dark window.
I was still wearing my maid uniform.
A black dress.
White collar.
White apron.
The same clothes people saw and immediately decided who I was.
A servant.
Someone who belonged in the background.
Someone who existed to make other people’s lives easier.
But underneath that uniform, I was still Harper Williams.
A woman who had dreams.
A woman who used to paint.
A woman who once believed she could become something more than the person holding a tray behind powerful people.
I picked up my coat.
Then I heard footsteps.
Slow.
Heavy.
Controlled.
I didn’t need to turn around to know who it was.
Daniel Kwan never walked like an ordinary person.
He moved like someone who expected the entire world to move around him.
I turned.
He stood at the entrance of the kitchen.
Fifty-eight years old.
Tall.
Perfectly dressed in a black suit.
Silver strands mixed with his dark hair.
His expression was unreadable, like always.
Daniel Kwan was the kind of man people feared before they even met him.
Men twice his size lowered their voices around him.
Business partners never interrupted him.
Enemies disappeared from conversations overnight.
Everyone knew his name.
Everyone knew his power.
But very few people knew the man behind it.
And I was definitely not one of them.
“Leaving?” he asked.
His voice was calm.
Almost too calm.
“Yes, Mr. Kwan.”
His eyes moved from my coat to my handbag.
Then back to my face.
“You’re finished for the night?”
“Yes.”
A pause.
I expected him to walk away.
Usually, he did.
Daniel never wasted words on people like me.
But instead, he stayed there.
Watching.
Waiting.
I don’t know why I said it.
Maybe because I was tired of pretending I didn’t have a life.
Maybe because I was tired of feeling invisible.
Maybe because a small part of me wanted to know if he saw me as a person.
“I have a date tonight.”
The words left my mouth before I could stop them.
The silence afterward was immediate.
Daniel didn’t move.
For a second, I thought he hadn’t heard me.
Then his expression changed.
Barely.
Most people would never notice.
But I had spent three years studying his reactions.
His eyes narrowed slightly.
His jaw tightened.
“You have a date.”
It wasn’t a question.
It was almost like he was repeating a sentence he couldn’t understand.
“Yes.”
“With who?”
The question came too quickly.
I looked at him.
That surprised me more than anything.
Daniel noticed.
His expression hardened again.
“I was asking a simple question.”
I placed my coat over my arm.
“And I was giving a simple answer.”
Something changed in the room.
Because nobody talked to Daniel Kwan like that.
Nobody.
His employees feared him.
His enemies hated him.
His friends respected him.
But nobody challenged him.
Especially not a maid.
Especially not me.
For a moment, I thought I had made a mistake.
Then Daniel walked closer.
Not aggressively.
Not threateningly.
Just enough that I could feel the difference between us.
His world was built on control.
Mine was built on surviving.
“You’ve worked here for three years,” he said.
“Yes.”
“You never mentioned anyone.”
I almost smiled.
“Because you never asked.”
That sentence hit harder than I expected.
Daniel stopped.
The powerful man who could silence a room full of criminals suddenly had nothing to say.
I looked away first.
“I’m not asking permission, Mr. Kwan.”
His eyes returned to mine.
“I didn’t say you needed permission.”
“No.”
I picked up my handbag.
“But you looked like you wanted to give it.”
For the first time, something close to emotion crossed his face.
Not anger.
Not annoyance.
Confusion.
Like he was seeing something he had ignored for years.
I walked past him.
And that was when I noticed something strange.
His eyes followed me.
Not my uniform.
Not the work I was doing.
Me.
I reached the doorway.
“Harper.”
I stopped.
Daniel rarely used my first name.
Actually, I couldn’t remember the last time he had.
I turned around.
“Yes?”
He looked at me for several seconds.
Then he asked the one question I never expected.
“Are you happy?”
The question caught me completely off guard.
Because it wasn’t the question of a boss.
It wasn’t the question of a man protecting his reputation.
It sounded like the question of someone who genuinely didn’t know the answer.
I swallowed.
“I don’t know.”
Daniel’s expression changed slightly.
“But I want to find out.”
Then I left.
The restaurant was small.
Nothing like Daniel’s mansion.
No marble floors.
No expensive paintings.
No security outside the door.
Just warm lights, quiet music, and normal people laughing.
For the first time in years, I felt normal.
My date, Ethan, was kind.
He didn’t know about Daniel Kwan.
He didn’t care about wealth or power.
He asked me about books.
About places I wanted to visit.
About the things I wanted to do before I became too afraid to try.
And I realized something.
I had spent so much time working around powerful people that I forgot how refreshing it was to be around someone who simply wanted to know me.
But halfway through dinner, my phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
I ignored it.
Then it vibrated again.
And again.
Finally, I looked down.
Three messages.
The first one said:
You should not have told him.
My heart stopped.
The second message appeared.
Daniel Kwan is not the only person watching you.
Then the third message arrived.
Ask him what happened to your father.
I stared at the screen.
My hands went cold.
Because nobody at Daniel’s mansion knew about my father.
Nobody.
I had never told anyone.
Not even Daniel.
I quickly looked around the restaurant.
Everyone seemed normal.
A couple laughing near the window.
A waiter carrying drinks.
A family celebrating a birthday.
But suddenly, I felt like I was being watched.
I grabbed my coat.
“I need to leave.”
Ethan looked confused.
“Harper, what happened?”
“I’m sorry.”
I didn’t explain.
I couldn’t.
Because deep inside, I already knew one thing.
Someone wanted me scared.
Someone wanted me away from Daniel Kwan.
And someone knew a secret I had spent my entire life trying to forget.
When I returned to the mansion, the lights were still on.
That was unusual.
Daniel never left unnecessary lights on.
I entered quietly.
The main hallway was empty.
Then I saw him.
Daniel stood near the kitchen island.
Waiting.
In his hand was my employee badge.
The same badge I thought I had lost months ago.
He turned it over slowly.
His expression was colder than I had ever seen.
“Where did you get this?” I asked.
Daniel looked at the back.
At the words written there.
Then he looked at me.
“Harper.”
My stomach tightened.
“Who told you about this?”
I stepped closer.
“What does it mean?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
Instead, he reached for his phone.
The screen showed a security image.
A picture taken from inside the mansion.
A picture of me.
Sleeping.
My blood turned cold.
Because the photo was not old.
It was taken last night.
Daniel looked at the image.
Then he whispered one sentence.
“Someone inside my house has been protecting you.”
May you like
A second later, the mansion security alarm suddenly went off.
And the locked door behind Daniel slowly opened from the inside.
