Chapter 5 - The Girl In The Forgotten Video

The video kept playing.
But I couldn’t move.
I couldn’t breathe.
I couldn’t look away.
The screen showed a dark road.
An old black vehicle.
My mother standing beside it.
Daniel standing several feet away.
And then…
A little girl walked into the frame.
Me.
Seven years old.
Wearing the pink jacket I remembered.
The one my mother bought me before everything changed.
My hands started shaking.
“That’s impossible.”
My voice barely came out.
Daniel didn’t answer.
My mother covered her mouth.
Tears filled her eyes.
“Harper…”
I looked at her.
“You knew?”
She couldn’t speak.
That was enough.
My entire body felt cold.
“You knew I was there.”
My mother stepped closer.
“No, sweetheart, listen—”
“Don’t call me that.”
The words came out sharper than I expected.
She stopped.
Because she heard the pain behind them.
For twenty years, I had lived with questions.
Why did my mother leave?
Why did my father disappear?
Why did Daniel Kwan, a stranger with a dangerous reputation, secretly watch over me?
I thought I was missing pieces of my life.
I never imagined the missing piece was me.
Daniel paused the video.
The little girl on the screen disappeared.
But the image stayed in my mind.
“I don’t understand.”
I looked at Daniel.
“You said you were there.”
“Yes.”
“You said my father found us.”
“Yes.”
“You said my mother disappeared.”
“Yes.”
I pointed at the screen.
“But I was there.”
Daniel nodded slowly.
“You were.”
My heart raced.
“Then why don’t I remember?”
Nobody answered.
And that scared me more than anything.
Because memories could fade.
People could lie.
But something inside me knew there was a reason.
A reason everyone had been protecting.
A reason my entire childhood felt like a story with missing pages.
My mother walked toward me.
“I wanted to tell you.”
“When?”
Her face broke.
“When you were ready.”
I laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it hurt.
“Ready?”
I looked around the security room.
“At what age was I supposed to be ready to learn my mother was alive?”
She looked down.
“At what age was I supposed to learn Daniel knew everything?”
Daniel closed his eyes.
I saw it.
Regret.
Real regret.
“I made a promise.”
I looked at him.
“To my mother.”
He continued.
“I promised I would keep you safe.”
“And you thought lying to me was keeping me safe?”
“No.”
His answer was immediate.
“I thought keeping you away from the truth would keep you alive.”
The words hit differently.
Because Daniel didn’t sound like he was defending himself.
He sounded like a man who had hated himself for years.
I looked back at the video.
The little girl.
My younger self.
Walking toward my mother.
Then something happened.
Something I hadn’t noticed before.
I stepped closer to the screen.
“Stop.”
Daniel looked at me.
“Play it again.”
He rewound.
The video started.
My younger self walked toward my mother.
My mother hugged me.
Daniel stood behind her.
Then a man entered the frame.
My father.
William Williams.
I froze.
But this time, I noticed something else.
My father wasn’t angry.
He looked terrified.
He wasn’t chasing us.
He was running from something.
“Zoom in.”
Daniel did.
The image became blurry.
But enough remained.
My father was holding something.
A small black device.
A recorder.
“What is that?”
Daniel stared at the screen.
“I don’t know.”
My mother suddenly looked different.
Like she remembered something.
“Oh my God.”
I turned.
“What?”
She looked at Daniel.
“He had it.”
Daniel’s face changed.
“What?”
“The recorder.”
My mother’s voice shook.
“He took it from the office before he came to find us.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“What recorder?”
My mother looked at him.
“The one that could destroy everyone.”
The room went silent.
I looked between them.
“What was on it?”
Neither answered.
Then Daniel said:
“Everything.”
The next hour felt unreal.
Daniel moved through the mansion like a different person.
He called people.
Locked doors.
Checked security systems.
But he never left me alone.
Not once.
That was strange.
Because Daniel Kwan was a man who trusted almost nobody.
Yet now he was making sure I stayed within his sight.
Finally, I asked:
“What was my father involved in?”
Daniel looked at the city through the window.
“The organization I built was not always mine.”
I listened.
“Twenty years ago, your father was part of something bigger.”
“How big?”
“Big enough that people disappeared.”
I swallowed.
“And my mother found out.”
“Yes.”
“What did she find?”
Daniel looked at me.
“Names.”
“Whose names?”
“People who were supposed to be untouchable.”
I understood.
Powerful people.
Rich people.
People who could erase problems.
Including my family.
“My father wanted to expose them.”
Daniel nodded.
“But he realized something too late.”
“What?”
“That people with power don’t lose quietly.”
A silence followed.
Then my phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
Again.
This time there was a photo.
I opened it.
My blood turned cold.
It was Daniel.
Twenty years younger.
Standing outside the same building from the video.
But he wasn’t alone.
My father stood beside him.
And between them was a young woman.
My mother.
The message appeared.
Ask Daniel who really pulled the trigger.
I looked at Daniel.
His face changed.
He knew exactly what I had received.
“You knew.”
His silence answered.
“Daniel.”
He walked toward me.
“Harper, listen to me.”
“No.”
My voice shook.
“You keep saying that.”
I held up the phone.
“You keep telling me you protected me.”
I stared at the picture.
“But every secret leads back to you.”
Daniel looked away.
And that was the first time I saw it.
A crack.
The perfect control.
The unbreakable mask.
Gone.
“I didn’t kill your mother.”
I stared at him.
“But you know who did.”
Daniel didn’t answer.
The silence was enough.
My mother started crying.
“Daniel…”
He closed his eyes.
“I tried to stop it.”
I felt my heartbeat in my ears.
“Tried?”
Daniel looked at me.
“The night your mother disappeared…”
He stopped.
The room went completely still.
“I wasn’t the only person from my organization there.”
“Who else?”
Daniel looked toward the door.
Like he expected someone to appear.
Like he had spent twenty years waiting for this moment.
Then he whispered:
“The person who ordered it.”
I stepped closer.
“Who?”
Daniel reached for a file hidden beneath the security desk.
An old file.
One he had never shown me.
He opened it.
Inside was one photograph.
A man.
A name.
I looked down.
And everything inside me stopped.
Because the person who destroyed my family…
was the same person who had raised me after my father disappeared.
My hands trembled as I read the name.
Then the mansion alarm suddenly screamed.
Daniel grabbed the file.
My mother stepped back.
Someone had entered the security room.
May you like
The door handle moved slowly.
And from the other side, a familiar voice whispered my name.
