Chapter 7 - The Truth About the Lost Mother

The darkness inside the storage room felt endless.

Clara stood frozen.

The only light came from the small gap beneath the door.

Victor Moretti stood between her and freedom.

For years, Clara had learned how to recognize danger.

She knew the difference between someone who was angry and someone who was truly dangerous.

Anger was loud.

Danger was quiet.

And Victor was completely calm.

That scared her more than shouting ever could.

“You should have walked away.”

His voice was almost gentle.

Almost.

Clara tightened her grip around the photograph.

The picture of Isabella.

The proof that something had been hidden.

“I should have walked away?”

Victor smiled slightly.

“You were a maid, Clara.”

The way he said her name made her uncomfortable.

Like he had been studying her.

“You came here to clean rooms. To serve food. To disappear.”

He stepped closer.

“But then you decided to become important.”

Clara’s heart raced.

“You’re afraid.”

Victor stopped.

“What?”

“You’re afraid because Lorenzo is finally finding the truth.”

For the first time, his expression changed.

Only slightly.

But Clara saw it.

The confidence disappeared for a second.

And she knew.

She was right.

Victor Moretti was not afraid of her.

He was afraid of what she represented.

Proof.

“You don’t understand this world.”

Victor’s voice became colder.

“You think because you helped a baby survive, you suddenly belong here?”

Clara said nothing.

Because she knew something he did not.

She did not belong because of power.

She belonged because Leo needed her.

Because Lorenzo needed answers.

Because Isabella deserved justice.

“You’re wrong about me.”

Victor looked amused.

“Am I?”

“Yes.”

Clara looked directly at him.

“I’m not trying to take anything from this family.”

A pause.

“I already lost everything.”

Something about those words made Victor quiet.

But only for a moment.

Then he laughed softly.

“That is exactly why you are dangerous.”

Clara frowned.

“Why?”

“Because people who have nothing left to lose are unpredictable.”

Suddenly, footsteps echoed outside.

Victor’s expression changed.

Someone was coming.

He immediately reached for the photograph in Clara’s hand.

She pulled it back.

“No.”

His eyes narrowed.

“Give it to me.”

“No.”

For the first time, Clara’s voice was stronger.

Not because she was fearless.

Because she was tired.

Tired of powerful people deciding what happened to innocent people.

Tired of watching others lose everything while the guilty walked away.

“You don’t get to erase her.”

Victor stared at her.

Then the door handle moved.

Someone was outside.

“Clara?”

Lorenzo’s voice.

Her heart almost stopped.

Victor looked toward the door.

The calm mask returned.

But Clara noticed something.

Fear.

Real fear.

Because if Lorenzo entered this room...

Everything would change.

Victor stepped back.

“This conversation never happened.”

Clara stared at him.

“Is that a threat?”

“No.”

He smiled.

“It’s advice.”

The door opened.

Lorenzo stood there.

His expression immediately changed when he saw Clara.

Then he looked at Victor.

The silence between the two men was heavy.

“What are you doing here?”

Lorenzo’s voice was dangerous.

Victor did not hesitate.

“I was looking for some old documents.”

Lorenzo looked around.

Then at Clara.

“Why is she here?”

Before Victor could answer, Clara spoke.

“I found something.”

Lorenzo’s eyes moved to her.

“What?”

She looked at Victor.

Then back at Lorenzo.

The photograph felt heavy in her hand.

She could reveal everything.

Right now.

But something stopped her.

Fear.

Not for herself.

For Lorenzo.

Because if Victor was truly responsible for what happened to Isabella...

Then the truth would destroy him.

And Clara knew what grief could do.

She knew because she carried it every day.

“I found an old picture.”

She handed it to Lorenzo.

His face changed the moment he saw it.

Victor and Isabella.

Together.

Arguing.

The color slowly disappeared from his face.

“Where did you get this?”

His voice was barely audible.

“The room.”

Lorenzo looked at Victor.

“What is this?”

Victor remained calm.

A little too calm.

“It’s not what you think.”

Lorenzo laughed once.

But there was no humor in it.

“Everyone says that when they have something to hide.”

The confrontation ended when Victor left.

But the damage was done.

Lorenzo stood alone in the storage room.

Looking at the photograph.

Clara watched him.

She had seen powerful men break before.

But this was different.

This was a man losing the last piece of his past.

“Did you know?”

Lorenzo asked quietly.

Clara shook her head.

“No.”

“Did Isabella trust him?”

Clara hesitated.

“I don’t know.”

Lorenzo closed his eyes.

Because that was the hardest part.

Not knowing.

For months, he had believed Isabella died because of his enemies.

Now he wondered if someone she trusted betrayed her.

Someone she welcomed into their lives.

Someone she considered family.

That night, Lorenzo did something he had never done before.

He asked Clara to stay.

Not as a maid.

Not as an employee.

As someone he trusted.

They sat in his office while rain hit the windows.

Leo slept peacefully nearby.

Lorenzo placed the photograph on the desk.

“Isabella was careful.”

Clara listened.

“She trusted almost nobody.”

“Except him?”

Lorenzo nodded.

“That’s what bothers me.”

He looked at the picture.

“Victor saved my life once.”

Clara remained silent.

“He protected my family when we were younger. He helped me build everything.”

A bitter smile appeared.

“I thought he was my brother.”

The pain in his voice was impossible to miss.

Clara understood.

Betrayal from an enemy hurt.

But betrayal from someone you loved destroyed something deeper.

“Maybe there’s another explanation.”

Lorenzo looked at her.

“You believe that?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because if he really did something terrible...”

She paused.

“Then he has already taken enough from you.”

Lorenzo stared at her.

Nobody spoke to him like that.

Nobody cared about what he could lose emotionally.

They cared about what he owned.

His money.

His power.

His name.

But Clara cared about Lorenzo.

The man.

Not the legend.

A few days later, the investigation uncovered something shocking.

Victor had accessed hospital records shortly before Isabella’s death.

He had also deleted several security files.

But there was one thing missing.

The final piece.

The person who gave Victor the information.

Because Victor was not working alone.

Someone else was involved.

Someone higher.

Someone who wanted Leo dead before he was even born.

That evening, Clara was walking back to the nursery when she found something on her pillow.

A small envelope.

No name.

No explanation.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

Only one sentence.

YOU SAVED THE WRONG CHILD.

Clara felt the blood drain from her face.

Before she could react, her phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

A distorted voice spoke.

“You should have let him die.”

Clara froze.

“Who is this?”

A pause.

Then:

“The same person who killed his mother.”

The call ended.

Clara stood there in silence.

Her hands trembled.

Because now she knew.

This was bigger than Victor.

Bigger than the Rossi family.

Someone had been waiting.

Waiting for Leo to survive.

Waiting for someone to save him.

Waiting for someone like Clara.

When Lorenzo found her, she was still holding the phone.

One look at her face told him something was wrong.

“What happened?”

Clara looked at him.

For a moment, she saw the man who had once pointed a gun at her.

The man who had lost everything.

The man who was now trying to protect them.

Then she handed him the note.

Lorenzo read it.

His expression changed.

The anger returned.

But this time, something else came with it.

Determination.

Because whoever was behind this had made one mistake.

They underestimated Clara.

They underestimated Leo.

And most importantly...

They underestimated Lorenzo Rossi.

He looked at Clara.

“No one touches my family again.”

The words were quiet.

But they were a promise.

And for the first time since Isabella died...

May you like

Lorenzo Rossi was not fighting for revenge.

He was fighting for a future.
