Chapter 3 - The Secret Hidden Beneath a Maid’s Uniform

The message remained on Lorenzo Rossi’s phone for nearly a minute.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody moved.
The entire mansion seemed to hold its breath.
THE CHILD WHO SURVIVED SHOULD HAVE DIED WITH HIS MOTHER.
Those words were simple.
But they carried a threat powerful enough to freeze every person standing in the hallway.
Lorenzo read the message again.
Then again.
His eyes became colder with every second.
The man who controlled companies, people, and entire criminal networks was suddenly facing something he could not simply destroy with money or power.
Someone had come after his family.
Again.
The memory of Isabella’s death flashed through his mind.
The explosion.
The flames.
The broken glass.
The phone call that changed his life forever.
For two months, Lorenzo had convinced himself that Isabella’s death was the end of the nightmare.
A tragedy.
A painful chapter.
But this message proved something else.
Someone was still watching.
Someone was still waiting.
And now they knew about Leo.
“Find out who sent it.”
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
The guards around him immediately understood what that meant.
Lorenzo Rossi was at his most dangerous when he stopped showing emotion.
“Yes, sir.”
The guard hurried away.
Clara stood several feet away, watching him.
She had never seen him like this.
The anger was obvious.
But underneath it was something else.
A fear no one else noticed.
A fear that belonged to a father.
Not a mafia boss.
Not a powerful man.
Just a father terrified of losing his child.
She looked toward the nursery door.
Inside, little Leo was sleeping peacefully.
For the first time since she entered the Rossi mansion, Clara felt something she had tried to avoid.
A connection.
She had promised herself she would never become attached.
She could not survive another loss.
But somehow, this tiny child had reached the part of her heart she thought was gone forever.
And that scared her.
Because loving someone meant giving them the power to hurt you.
That evening, the mansion returned to a strange kind of normal.
The security was doubled.
More guards appeared around the property.
Every entrance was checked.
Every employee was questioned.
But one thing remained unchanged.
Leo still needed Clara.
The doctors were confused.
The nurses were confused.
Everyone was confused.
But the baby who had rejected every bottle in existence would only calm down when Clara held him.
Lorenzo noticed.
He noticed everything.
From the doorway, he watched as Clara sat beside Leo’s crib.
She hummed quietly.
Not a song.
More like a memory.
Something soft.
Something a mother would sing.
Leo’s tiny fingers held onto hers.
And for a moment, Lorenzo saw something that almost broke him.
He saw Isabella.
Not because Clara looked like her.
She didn’t.
Isabella had always been elegant and confident.
Clara was quiet.
Gentle.
Humble.
But the way she looked at Leo...
That was the same.
The same unconditional love.
The same way Isabella had looked at their unborn child before everything was taken away.
Lorenzo quickly looked away.
He hated that feeling.
The feeling of remembering.
Because remembering meant accepting that Isabella was really gone.
Later that night, Lorenzo found Clara alone in the staff dining room.
She was sitting at a small table, untouched food in front of her.
She looked exhausted.
“You should eat.”
Clara looked up in surprise.
She had not expected him.
Especially not him.
“I’m fine.”
“That wasn’t a suggestion.”
His tone was still commanding.
But something about it had changed.
It was not the same cold authority from before.
Clara slowly picked up her fork.
“Yes, Mr. Rossi.”
For a moment, they sat in silence.
Then Lorenzo spoke.
“How long have you worked here?”
“Three weeks.”
“And before this?”
“Different cleaning jobs.”
He studied her.
“You don’t act like someone who has worked around wealthy families.”
Clara gave a small, sad smile.
“What does someone like that act like?”
“Afraid.”
The answer came quickly.
Clara looked at him.
“You think everyone is afraid of you?”
“They usually are.”
She looked down.
“I’m not afraid of you.”
That surprised him.
“Why?”
Because the truth was simple.
She had already faced the worst thing life could do.
A threat from a powerful man was nothing compared to losing her child.
But she didn’t say that.
Instead, she quietly answered:
“Because I know what pain looks like.”
Lorenzo became still.
Those words reached somewhere deep.
“You think you know my pain?”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“I don’t know your pain.”
A pause.
“But I know what it feels like to wake up every morning and wish you could trade your life for someone else’s.”
Lorenzo stared at her.
For the first time, he saw something behind Clara’s eyes.
Not sadness.
A wound.
A wound that had never healed.
“What happened to you?”
The question escaped before he could stop it.
Clara froze.
She had avoided talking about Emma since she arrived.
The mansion staff knew nothing.
Nobody knew why she sometimes disappeared into empty hallways.
Nobody knew why baby clothes made her emotional.
Nobody knew why she avoided conversations about family.
But now Lorenzo was looking at her.
Not as an employee.
Not as a stranger.
As someone who understood loss.
“My daughter died.”
The words were barely audible.
The room became silent.
Lorenzo’s expression changed.
“When?”
“Three weeks ago.”
He looked shocked.
“You came here three weeks after losing your child?”
Clara nodded.
“I needed work.”
“That soon?”
She looked at him.
“What else was I supposed to do?”
Lorenzo had no answer.
Because he understood something.
He had spent two months surrounded by doctors, security, and money.
And still barely functioned.
This woman had lost everything.
And she still woke up every morning.
Still worked.
Still cared for his son.
Something inside him shifted.
The next morning, Lorenzo made a decision.
One that shocked everyone.
He moved Clara from regular maid duties.
She was assigned permanently to Leo.
The staff immediately began whispering.
Some believed she had manipulated him.
Some believed she had gained his trust too quickly.
Some were jealous.
But Lorenzo ignored them all.
Because he had seen something they had not.
He had seen his son smile.
A tiny smile.
Barely noticeable.
But real.
The first smile since Isabella died.
And it happened when Clara entered the room.
But while the Rossi mansion slowly began changing, someone outside was watching.
A black car sat across from the property.
The windows were tinted.
The engine was off.
Inside, a man looked at photographs spread across the passenger seat.
One photo showed Lorenzo.
Another showed Leo.
And another showed Clara.
The man tapped the picture of the maid.
“So she’s the reason the boy survived.”
A second voice answered from the phone.
“Yes.”
“And Rossi trusts her?”
“More than anyone.”
The man smiled.
A cold, emotionless smile.
“Good.”
He picked up Clara’s photograph.
“Then she will be the easiest way to destroy him.”
That night, Clara walked into the nursery carrying Leo.
She thought the house was finally becoming peaceful.
She thought maybe she had found a place where she could heal.
She was wrong.
Because hidden inside the Rossi mansion was a secret.
A secret connected to Isabella’s death.
A secret that someone was willing to kill for.
And Clara Bennett, the grieving maid who only wanted to save a baby, had unknowingly stepped into a war.
A war between powerful enemies.
A war where she was no longer invisible.
May you like
Because now...
Everyone knew her name.
