Chapter 5 - The Woman Who Saved His Son and Changed His Heart

The sound of the gunshot echoed through the Rossi mansion.
For a moment, nobody moved.
The world became frozen between one heartbeat and the next.
Clara stood behind Lorenzo, feeling the warmth of his hand gripping her arm.
Only hours earlier, he had been the man standing in front of her with a gun pointed at her head.
Now he was standing in front of her again.
But this time...
He was protecting her.
“Stay behind me.”
His voice was low.
Controlled.
The voice of a man who had survived countless dangerous situations.
Clara looked at him.
“You’re protecting me?”
Lorenzo did not turn around.
“Don’t move.”
That was not an answer.
But somehow, Clara understood.
Because Lorenzo Rossi was not a man who explained his feelings.
He showed them through actions.
And right now, his action was clear.
He was putting himself between her and danger.
The security team rushed through the hallway.
Flashlights moved across the darkness.
The mansion, once peaceful, transformed into a battlefield.
“Secure the nursery!”
Lorenzo ordered.
Several guards immediately moved toward Leo’s room.
Clara’s heart stopped.
“My baby—”
She caught herself.
She almost said it.
My baby.
Not because she believed Leo belonged to her.
But because her heart had already accepted him.
Lorenzo noticed.
And surprisingly, he did not correct her.
Instead, he looked at her.
“Leo is safe.”
The confidence in his voice calmed her.
For the first time since entering the Rossi mansion, Clara realized something.
Lorenzo Rossi trusted her.
Not completely.
Not yet.
But enough.
Enough to let her stand beside the person he valued most in the world.
His son.
The investigation lasted for nearly an hour.
The bullet was found embedded in the wooden frame outside Lorenzo’s office.
It was not aimed at Leo.
It was not aimed at Clara.
It was a warning.
Someone wanted them to know they could reach inside the mansion whenever they wanted.
The message was obvious.
The Rossi family was vulnerable.
And someone was enjoying proving it.
Lorenzo stood in his office, staring at the bullet on the table.
His security chief, Marco, stood across from him.
“We searched every entrance.”
“And?”
“No signs of forced entry.”
Lorenzo’s eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?”
Marco hesitated.
“It means whoever did this already knew how to get inside.”
The room became silent.
Lorenzo slowly looked around his office.
His home.
The place where he had raised his family.
The place where Isabella had once laughed.
The place where his son now slept.
Someone inside his world was betraying him.
And that betrayal hurt more than the attack itself.
Meanwhile, Clara sat beside Leo’s crib.
Her hands were still shaking.
Not from the gunshot.
From the realization of what had almost happened.
She looked down at the baby sleeping peacefully.
“How do you survive all this?”
She whispered.
“You’re so small.”
Leo moved slightly.
His tiny fingers reached out.
Without thinking, Clara placed her finger in his hand.
Immediately, he held onto it.
A tear fell from her eye.
Because that tiny gesture reminded her of everything she lost.
Emma.
Her daughter.
The child she never got to watch grow.
The child whose fingers she never got to hold for more than a few moments.
Clara closed her eyes.
“I miss you.”
The words escaped quietly.
“I miss you every day.”
She did not notice Lorenzo standing at the doorway.
He heard everything.
And for the first time, he understood.
Clara was not just helping Leo because she was kind.
She was helping him because she knew what it meant to lose a child.
She was carrying the same wound he carried.
Different story.
Same pain.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Clara opened her eyes.
Lorenzo stood there.
She quickly wiped her tears.
“Mr. Rossi.”
“Your daughter.”
Her body became still.
“How did you know?”
“I asked.”
Of course he had.
Lorenzo Rossi had the resources to uncover almost anything.
But this time, he did not look at her with suspicion.
He looked at her with understanding.
“I’m sorry.”
The words shocked her.
Because they sounded real.
Not like an apology from a powerful man forced to say something polite.
A genuine apology.
Clara looked away.
“Thank you.”
Silence filled the room.
Then Lorenzo spoke.
“Was he violent?”
Clara froze.
She knew exactly what he meant.
Her ex-husband.
The man who destroyed her life.
She looked down.
“Yes.”
Lorenzo’s expression changed.
Not anger toward her.
Anger toward someone else.
“What was his name?”
Clara looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because someone hurt you.”
The answer was simple.
Too simple.
And somehow, that made it more emotional.
Clara shook her head.
“It doesn’t matter anymore.”
Lorenzo disagreed.
“It matters.”
For years, people had feared Lorenzo Rossi because of his anger.
But Clara saw something different.
His anger was not always about power.
Sometimes it came from wanting to protect the people he loved.
That night, something unexpected happened.
Leo laughed.
A tiny sound.
Barely there.
But real.
The nurse dropped the medical chart she was holding.
The doctor froze.
Even Lorenzo, who had been reviewing documents beside the crib, stopped moving.
Nobody had heard Leo laugh before.
Not once.
Clara looked at the baby.
Then she smiled.
A real smile.
The first one Lorenzo had seen from her.
And strangely...
He found himself staring.
Not because she was beautiful.
Although she was.
Not because she had saved his son.
Although she had.
But because she reminded him of something he thought he had lost forever.
Warmth.
Later that evening, Lorenzo found Clara outside in the garden.
The mansion lights reflected on the water fountain.
She stood alone, looking at the stars.
“You should be inside.”
She turned.
“You always tell people what to do?”
“Yes.”
A small smile appeared on her face.
“That must be exhausting.”
For a moment, Lorenzo almost smiled.
Almost.
Then he stood beside her.
“Why did you stay?”
Clara looked confused.
“What?”
“After everything.”
He looked toward the mansion.
“The danger.”
“The suspicion.”
“The way everyone looks at you.”
Clara was quiet.
Then she answered honestly.
“Because Leo needs me.”
Lorenzo looked at her.
“And what about you?”
She did not answer.
Because she did not know.
For weeks, she had survived by focusing only on work.
Only on getting through the next day.
But now someone was asking what she needed.
And she had no idea.
“I don’t know.”
The honesty surprised him.
Lorenzo looked away.
Because he understood.
He did not know either.
He knew how to be a businessman.
A leader.
A protector.
But after losing Isabella...
He had forgotten how to live.
The next morning, a shocking discovery was made.
The security team found hidden files inside the mansion’s old surveillance system.
Files that had been deleted.
Files that should not exist.
And one recording caught everyone’s attention.
It was from the night Isabella died.
Lorenzo watched the footage alone.
His face became pale.
Because in the final seconds of the recording...
Before the explosion...
Isabella received a phone call.
And the person calling her...
Was someone Lorenzo trusted completely.
Someone who had been inside the Rossi family for years.
Someone who knew every weakness.
Every secret.
Every movement.
Lorenzo stopped the video.
His hands tightened into fists.
Because the enemy was not outside the gates.
The enemy had been sitting at his table.
Sleeping under his roof.
And now that enemy knew about Clara.
Knew about Leo.
Knew that hope had returned to the Rossi family.
Lorenzo looked toward the nursery.
Toward his son.
Toward the woman who had changed everything.
And he made a promise.
A promise he had not made since Isabella died.
May you like
Nobody would take his family from him again.
Not even if he had to destroy everyone who stood in his way.
