Chapter 9 - What Hannah’s Mother Had Hidden

“I built the device.”
Luca's confession emptied the room.
Victor slammed him against the wall.
Hannah screamed.
Antonio pulled Victor back.
“You killed Sofia?”
“No!”
Luca raised both hands.
“The device wasn't supposed to detonate.”
Victor hit him.
Luca collapsed.
“I was working undercover against Salvatore.”
“For whom?”
“Antonio.”
Everyone turned.
Antonio closed his eyes.
Victor stared at his brother.
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
Victor laughed.
No humor remained in it.
“You let me spend two years hunting ghosts while every person in this family knew something I didn't.”
Antonio stepped forward.
“The plan was to fake my death and expose Father's network.”
“And Sofia?”
“The detonator was replaced.”
“By whom?”
Luca wiped blood from his mouth.
“Margaret.”
Sofia covered her mouth.
Margaret had turned their fake bombing into a real one.
She had intended to kill Antonio and Sofia.
Mia's survival had been accidental.
Victor asked the obvious question.
“Why?”
Luca looked at Hannah.
“Because Margaret believed my child should inherit.”
Hannah understood.
“Me.”
“No.”
Silence.
Luca looked at Elena.
Hannah felt her mother's fear.
“No,” Elena whispered.
Luca continued.
“Hannah isn't my daughter.”
Hannah stopped breathing.
Another lie.
Luca looked broken.
“I wanted her to be. I raised money for Elena. Watched from a distance. Protected you because I loved your mother.”
Hannah looked at Elena.
“Then who is my father?”
Elena began crying.
Victor already suspected.
“No.”
Elena looked at him.
“Yes.”
Victor stepped backward.
Hannah whispered, “Who?”
Elena took her hands.
“Your father was Salvatore's enemy. A federal investigator named Daniel Brooks.”
Hannah recognized the surname.
The identity Elena had supposedly stolen wasn't random.
It belonged to Hannah's father.
“He died before you were born.”
“How?”
“Salvatore.”
Hannah closed her eyes.
The inheritance wasn't merely about family blood.
Salvatore had spent twenty-eight years trying to erase the child of the man who nearly destroyed him.
Luca had protected Hannah because he loved Elena.
Margaret wanted Hannah removed because she believed Luca deserved the empire.
Every secret had created another.
Hannah was tired of secrets.
“No more.”
Everyone looked at her.
“No more lies. No more criminal businesses. No more revenge.”
Victor said, “Hannah—”
“No. This family keeps calling violence protection.”
Nobody answered.
“Mia paid for it.”
That silenced everyone.
Hannah pointed toward the little girl.
“She lost two years of her voice because adults kept deciding murder was easier than truth.”
Victor looked at Mia.
Hannah was right.
She continued.
“Tomorrow, every illegal operation connected to my shares shuts down.”
Antonio stared.
“That will create enemies.”
“We already have enemies.”
“You could lose everything.”
“Then I lose it.”
Victor looked at her.
“You understand what you're doing?”
“Yes.”
“You'll need protection.”
“I know.”
Victor nodded.
“Then you have mine.”
Antonio eventually nodded too.
Sofia followed.
Elena cried.
Luca remained silent.
For the first time, the Romano empire had chosen something other than survival.
It had chosen change.
But Margaret hadn't finished.
Victor's phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
Margaret's voice.
“You found the photograph.”
“Yes.”
“Then you know my son was betrayed.”
“Your son made his own choices.”
“He chose Elena.”
Margaret's bitterness filled every syllable.
Victor understood.
This had never only been about money.
Margaret hated Elena.
Because Luca loved her.
“You want Hannah dead.”
“No.”
Victor frowned.
“I want Hannah to understand her mother.”
“What does that mean?”
A video arrived.
Victor opened it.
Footage from twenty-eight years earlier.
Elena.
Young.
Pregnant.
Arguing with Daniel Brooks.
Then another figure entered.
Hannah leaned closer.
Salvatore.
The audio was poor.
But one sentence was clear.
Daniel shouted:
“If anything happens to me, Elena has the evidence.”
The recording ended.
Margaret spoke again.
“Ask Elena what evidence.”
Victor looked at his sister.
Elena whispered, “I destroyed it.”
Margaret laughed through the phone.
“No, you didn't.”
Elena's face changed.
Margaret continued.
“You gave it to your daughter.”
Hannah frowned.
“I was a baby.”
“Exactly.”
The call ended.
Hannah looked at her mother.
“What did you give me?”
Elena stared at Hannah's neck.
Hannah wore a tiny silver locket.
She had worn it since childhood.
“My necklace?”
Elena nodded.
Hannah opened it.
Nothing.
Victor examined it.
There was a seam.
He used a knife.
The backing separated.
Inside was a tiny microfilm strip.
Luca stared.
Daniel Brooks's evidence.
Still intact.
Victor contacted a trusted federal prosecutor.
If the files were genuine, they could dismantle Salvatore's remaining network.
Hannah looked at the locket.
Her father had left her something after all.
Not money.
Truth.
Then Mia walked toward the window.
She stared outside.
“Hannah.”
Something in her voice made everyone turn.
A woman stood across the street.
Margaret.
She wasn't hiding.
She lifted a phone.
Hannah's phone rang.
Hannah answered.
Margaret spoke while looking directly at her through the glass.
“You have your father's evidence.”
“Yes.”
“Then your mother has finally run out of lies.”
“What do you want?”
Margaret smiled.
“To show you the one thing Elena never told you.”
A second woman stepped from the black car.
Hannah's face went cold.
The woman looked almost exactly like her.
Same eyes.
Same dark hair.
Same age.
Margaret placed a hand on the stranger's shoulder.
May you like
Then she spoke into the phone.
“Hannah, meet the sister your mother left behind.”
