Chapter 11 - The Girl They Came to Take

Victor shouted into the radio.
“Get away from it!”
The explosion came seconds later.
Even underground, they felt it.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
Claire covered her face.
“I didn't know.”
Hannah stared at her.
Then chose.
“I believe you.”
Claire looked stunned.
Victor returned to the wired door.
“Mia first. Family drama later.”
He cut the final wire.
The door unlocked.
Hannah opened it.
Mia ran into her arms.
Hannah held her.
Victor checked the room.
Empty.
Margaret had already left.
But she had left evidence.
Documents lined the walls.
Claire's childhood.
Hannah's childhood.
Mia's life.
Margaret had watched all of them.
She had spent decades manufacturing resentment.
Victor found a map.
Locations marked throughout Chicago.
Businesses connected to Salvatore.
Hannah understood.
Margaret wasn't merely obsessed with inheritance.
She had built a competing organization.
Using Salvatore's enemies.
The war had never been Romano against outsiders.
It had been Salvatore against Margaret.
Everyone else had been pieces.
Mia tugged Hannah's sleeve.
“Lady said something.”
“What?”
“She said Grandpa isn't in jail.”
Victor froze.
Salvatore had supposedly been taken into federal custody.
He called his contact.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Then Antonio called.
“Victor.”
His voice sounded wrong.
“What?”
“Salvatore escaped during transfer.”
Victor closed his eyes.
“How?”
“Inside help.”
Margaret.
Or someone working for her.
Hannah looked toward Mia.
The child was exhausted.
“This ends.”
Victor nodded.
“Yes.”
“No more hiding her.”
“I agree.”
“No more secret plans.”
Victor hesitated.
Hannah glared.
“I agree.”
They returned to the mansion.
Claire came with them.
Elena saw her daughter and immediately cried.
Claire did not embrace her.
Not yet.
But she didn't walk away either.
That was enough.
Federal investigators arrived to examine Daniel Brooks's microfilm.
The evidence was devastating.
Names.
Accounts.
Murders.
Bribes.
Salvatore's empire could finally be dismantled legally.
Victor surrendered his own records too.
Antonio stared.
“You know what this means?”
Victor nodded.
Some of their businesses would be investigated.
Victor himself could face charges for crimes he had committed.
Hannah looked at him.
“You don't have to—”
“Yes.”
He interrupted gently.
“If we're ending this, we end it.”
For Mia.
That part remained unspoken.
By morning, warrants spread across the city.
Arrests began.
Salvatore's network collapsed.
Margaret's people scattered.
But neither Salvatore nor Margaret could be found.
At noon, Hannah finally sat beside her mother.
Elena looked exhausted.
“I don't expect forgiveness.”
“Good.”
Elena nodded.
Hannah softened.
“But I want the truth.”
“You'll have it.”
“All of it.”
“Yes.”
“Did you abandon Claire?”
“No.”
Elena cried.
“I gave birth during a blackout at St. Matthew's. They told me my first daughter died. Margaret arranged it.”
Claire stood in the doorway.
She had heard.
“Can you prove that?”
Elena looked at her.
“I kept something.”
She removed a bracelet from a box.
Two infant identification tags.
Baby A.
Baby B.
“I stole them from the hospital because something felt wrong.”
Claire approached.
Baby A's tag had a time.
11:53.
Baby B: 11:47.
But the names had been altered.
Victor examined the ink.
One layer was newer.
The birth order might have been manipulated.
Claire laughed bitterly.
“So we don't know.”
Hannah took her hand.
“Does it matter?”
Claire stared.
“To Margaret, apparently.”
“I'm asking you.”
Claire looked at Hannah.
Slowly, she shook her head.
“No.”
“Then it doesn't matter to me either.”
For the first time, the sisters smiled at each other.
Mia entered carrying paper.
She handed Claire a drawing.
Four women.
Hannah.
Claire.
Elena.
Mia.
Claire began crying.
Mia hugged her.
Victor watched from the doorway.
Something unfamiliar settled over the mansion.
Not peace.
Not yet.
But possibility.
Then security called.
Victor answered.
His face changed.
“What?”
A guard spoke.
Victor looked toward Hannah.
“They found Margaret.”
“Where?”
“Outside.”
Everyone went to the foyer.
Margaret stood beyond the gates.
Alone.
Hands visible.
She surrendered without resistance.
Victor didn't trust it.
Margaret was escorted inside.
Claire confronted her.
“Why?”
Margaret smiled sadly.
“Because I wanted you to have what was yours.”
“You wanted revenge.”
“That too.”
“You stole me.”
Margaret's expression remained calm.
“I saved you.”
Claire shook her head.
“No. Hannah saved me. You taught me to hate people I'd never met.”
Margaret's face hardened.
Then she looked at Mia.
“You're all making the same mistake.”
Victor stepped closer.
“What mistake?”
“You think Salvatore escaped.”
“He did.”
Margaret smiled.
“No.”
Victor frowned.
Margaret leaned closer.
“I released him.”
Silence.
“Why?”
“Because there's one truth only Salvatore can reveal.”
Hannah stared.
“What truth?”
Margaret looked directly at Mia.
“Ask why the bomb was really planted.”
Antonio stepped forward.
“We know.”
“No.”
Margaret smiled.
“You know the story I wanted you to know.”
Victor's stomach tightened.
Then the front doors opened behind them.
Every security guard turned.
A single man entered.
No weapon.
No escort.
Salvatore Romano.
Victor reached for his gun.
Salvatore raised his hands.
“I didn't come to fight.”
Victor stared.
“Then why are you here?”
Salvatore looked toward Mia.
“Because Antonio isn't her father.”
Nobody moved.
Antonio's face went white.
Sofia whispered, “What?”
Salvatore looked at Victor.
Then at Mia.
May you like
And slowly said:
“Victor, there is something Sofia never told you about the night Mia was born...”
