Chapter 14 - The Choice Victor Never Expected

Hannah reached the school with police.
The fake driver had fled.
Mia was safe.
Security footage captured his face.
Antonio recognized him.
Derek Vale.
Margaret's nephew.
One final branch of her organization.
He wanted revenge.
But this time the Romanos did something different.
They called law enforcement.
No private executions.
No secret rooms.
No retaliation.
Hannah insisted.
Antonio resisted.
Then Mia said, “No fighting.”
That ended the argument.
Derek was arrested three days later.
He had weapons.
Photographs.
Plans.
Enough evidence to imprison him.
The cycle stopped without another body.
Hannah visited Victor the following week.
He sat across from her behind glass.
“You handled it better than I would have.”
“I know.”
Victor smiled.
“Still humble.”
“Mia handled it better than both of us.”
“That I believe.”
Hannah told him about school.
The foundation.
Claire.
Elena.
Then Mia took the phone.
“I got an A.”
Victor looked shocked.
“In math?”
Mia frowned.
“Yes.”
“Then you're definitely not biologically mine.”
She laughed.
Victor laughed too.
Hannah watched.
This was what family should have been all along.
Not power.
Not obedience.
Presence.
Victor returned home twelve months later after receiving additional credit for cooperation and good conduct.
Mia waited on the mansion steps.
Hannah stood behind her.
Victor exited the car.
For a moment nobody moved.
Then Mia ran.
“Dad!”
Victor caught her.
He lifted her.
Hannah cried.
Antonio clapped Victor's shoulder.
Sofia hugged him.
Elena kissed his cheek.
Claire handed him a ridiculous balloon reading WELCOME HOME, CONVICT.
Victor stared at it.
“Whose idea?”
Claire pointed at Hannah.
“Traitor,” Hannah said.
They laughed.
That evening they ate dinner together.
No guards standing behind chairs.
No whispered business.
No guns.
Victor had sold his interests in every company connected to organized crime.
The legitimate Romano businesses were placed under independent management, with Hannah and Claire retaining ownership shares.
The mansion changed too.
Half the security infrastructure disappeared.
Locked rooms opened.
The west-wing library remained.
Hannah entered it after dinner.
The oak desk still stood there.
Victor followed.
“This is where you ruined my life.”
Hannah turned.
“I comforted a child.”
“Exactly. Complete catastrophe.”
She smiled.
“You're welcome.”
Victor looked beneath the desk.
“I remember walking in and thinking I'd have to fire you.”
“You did eventually.”
“You were a terrible maid.”
“I was excellent.”
“You disobeyed the only important rule.”
“It was a stupid rule.”
“Yes.”
They smiled.
Then Victor grew serious.
“You saved her.”
“No.”
Hannah looked toward the doorway.
Mia stood there listening.
“She saved herself. We just finally stopped making it harder.”
Mia entered.
Victor put an arm around her.
Hannah took her hand.
The same arrangement as the drawing she'd made during the siege.
Mia looked between them.
“I want something.”
Victor became suspicious.
“That sentence is expensive.”
“A dog.”
Hannah laughed.
Victor frowned.
“No.”
Mia looked at Hannah.
“Hannah?”
“Absolutely.”
Victor stared.
“I own this house.”
Hannah raised an eyebrow.
“Technically, Claire and I own forty-three percent of the holding company that owns this house.”
Victor looked offended.
“You've been waiting a year to say that.”
“Longer.”
Mia smiled.
“Dog.”
Victor surrendered.
“One.”
“Two.”
“One.”
“Two.”
Victor looked at Hannah.
“Don't.”
Hannah smiled innocently.
“Two.”
Mia cheered.
Victor muttered something about betrayal.
The next morning, however, brought one final piece of unfinished business.
Mrs. Higgins found an envelope inside Salvatore's old office.
It had been trapped behind a drawer.
Victor opened it.
The handwriting belonged to his father.
VICTOR.
Inside was a confession.
Not legal.
Personal.
Salvatore admitted he had destroyed his family because he mistook control for love.
He wrote about Elena.
Antonio.
Victor.
And Mia.
At the end, one sentence stood alone.
If there is still a Romano home after me, let the child decide what it becomes.
Victor read it twice.
Then handed it to Hannah.
“What do you think?”
“I think Mia already decided.”
They looked toward the garden.
Mia was playing with Claire.
Laughing.
Not hiding.
Not silent.
Victor nodded.
That afternoon, they removed Salvatore's portrait from the foyer.
Not to erase him.
To stop worshiping him.
In its place Hannah hung a photograph.
Mia.
Eight years old.
Covered in mud.
Holding two rescue puppies.
Victor hated the photograph.
Which was why everyone else loved it.
That night thunder rolled over Chicago.
Hannah heard it from the library.
She waited.
No frightened footsteps.
No whimper.
Then Mia appeared.
Hannah opened her arms automatically.
Mia shook her head.
“I'm okay.”
Hannah smiled.
“I know.”
Mia walked toward the window.
Lightning illuminated the garden.
She didn't flinch.
Victor joined them.
Then Mia looked at both adults.
“Can we go outside?”
“In a storm?” Victor asked.
“Yeah.”
Hannah smiled.
“Why not?”
Victor sighed.
“Because lightning?”
But Mia was already running.
Hannah followed.
Victor stood alone for a second.
Then laughed and went after them.
Outside, Mia stepped into the rain.
She lifted her face toward the sky.
Thunder crashed.
She laughed.
Victor stopped.
Hannah looked at him.
He was crying.
He didn't hide it.
Mia ran toward him.
Victor caught her.
And for the first time, thunder sounded like nothing more than thunder.
Later that night Hannah returned to her room.
A small package rested outside her door.
No threat.
No anonymous photograph.
Just her old maid name tag.
Victor had repaired it.
On the back he had engraved:
THE WOMAN WHO BROKE THE RIGHT RULE.
Hannah smiled.
Then she noticed another envelope beneath it.
It had no name.
She opened it.
Inside was a key.
Victor appeared at the end of the hallway.
“What is this?”
“You'll find out.”
“I hate surprises.”
“I know.”
“What does it open?”
Victor nodded toward the west wing.
Hannah followed him.
They stopped outside a door that had remained locked since her first day at the estate.
Victor handed her the key.
“Go ahead.”
Hannah inserted it.
The lock clicked.
She looked at Victor.
“What did you do?”
He smiled.
Hannah reached for the handle.
May you like
The door slowly opened.
And Mia was standing inside beside something Hannah never expected to see...
