Chapter 6 - The Last Betrayal

Dominic watched the video twice.

The second time, he saw what he had missed.

Elena’s hands were not bound.

Marcus was not pointing a weapon at her.

Lily was crying, but she stood close to Marcus rather than away from him.

And just before the recording ended, Marcus glanced down and tapped two fingers against his wrist.

Twice.

A signal.

Dominic knew it.

Years earlier, he and Marcus used simple hand signals during operations when speaking openly was impossible.

Two taps meant:

WAIT.

Dominic lowered the phone.

Russell saw his face change.

“What?”

“Marcus isn’t betraying us.”

Adrian stopped smiling.

Dominic turned.

“He wanted me to think he was.”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

Russell understood.

“Someone else is inside the estate.”

Dominic looked at Adrian.

“Who?”

Adrian said nothing.

Dominic stepped closer.

“You weren’t running this alone.”

Silence.

“The financial structure was too clean. Construction was hidden through property entities. Someone knew household schedules. Someone knew Rebecca’s safe location.”

Adrian remained quiet.

Dominic continued.

“Marcus wanted us away from the house because your partner is there.”

That hit.

Adrian’s eyes shifted.

Tiny movement.

Enough.

Dominic smiled without warmth.

“Thank you.”

They restrained Adrian inside the chapel and left two men guarding him.

Dominic and Russell drove back.

During the ride, Marcus finally called.

Dominic answered.

“Talk.”

A pause.

Then Marcus said, “She’s here.”

“Who?”

“Rebecca.”

Dominic’s grip tightened.

Russell looked over.

Marcus continued.

“She arrived twenty minutes after you left.”

“Why?”

“She said she came to move Elena.”

“And?”

“She tried to access your office.”

Dominic closed his eyes briefly.

Rebecca Sloan.

His attorney.

Trusted for eleven years.

She had access to financial structures.

Legal documents.

Travel schedules.

Government contacts.

She had helped interpret every piece of evidence.

She had always been one step ahead because she had helped create it.

“Where is she now?”

“Underground.”

“Why?”

“She thinks the final evidence is there.”

“Does she know you’ve changed sides?”

“I don’t think so.”

“Where are Elena and Lily?”

“Kitchen. Safe.”

Dominic exhaled.

“Keep it that way.”

“What about Adrian?”

“Alive.”

Marcus was silent.

Then, “Good.”

Dominic understood.

A dead Adrian could deny nothing, but a living Adrian could testify.

Rebecca was the missing piece.

They arrived at the estate at 2:18 a.m.

Dominic entered through a rear service corridor.

Marcus met him.

For several seconds they simply looked at each other.

Dominic said, “You locked an innocent woman underground.”

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.”

“You threatened her.”

“Yes.”

“You frightened her daughter.”

“Yes.”

“You lied to me.”

“Yes.”

Dominic stepped closer.

“If Elena wants charges filed against you when this is over, I won’t stop her.”

Marcus swallowed.

“I know.”

“And if she doesn’t?”

Marcus waited.

“We’ll discuss what happens to you later.”

It was more mercy than Marcus expected.

Not forgiveness.

Not yet.

Dominic entered the kitchen.

Lily ran toward him.

“Mr. Vale!”

He crouched.

“Are you all right?”

She nodded.

“Mommy said you’d come back.”

Dominic looked at Elena.

She appeared tired but steady.

“Rebecca?” he asked.

Elena’s expression hardened.

“She was the one.”

“You’re sure?”

“I remembered her perfume.”

Dominic frowned.

“When?”

“The night I was trapped. Someone came downstairs while Marcus was gone. She stood outside the door.”

“Did you see her?”

“No. But I smelled the same perfume she was wearing tonight.”

A small detail.

The kind adults dismissed.

The kind frightened people remembered.

Dominic stood.

“Stay here.”

Elena caught his arm.

“Dominic.”

He looked at her.

“Be careful.”

He nodded.

The hidden staircase remained open.

Dominic descended alone first.

Russell and Marcus followed several yards behind.

Light glowed from the secret office.

Dominic approached.

Rebecca stood at the computer.

A handgun rested beside her keyboard.

She did not turn.

“You took longer than I expected.”

Dominic stopped.

“So did you.”

She finally faced him.

No fear.

No apology.

“What gave me away?”

“Elena.”

Rebecca smiled.

“The maid.”

“The woman you underestimated.”

“I underestimated several people.”

“Lily too.”

Rebecca’s smile disappeared.

Dominic entered.

“Why Adrian?”

“He had a claim to the organization and a lifetime of resentment.”

“And you?”

“I had intelligence.”

“That wasn’t the question.”

Rebecca leaned against the desk.

“My father lost everything because of yours.”

Dominic remained still.

Rebecca’s father, Thomas Sloan, had once served as legal counsel to Vincent Vale.

Dominic remembered little.

He had been young.

“He went to prison,” Rebecca said. “Your father gave prosecutors documents and saved himself.”

“My father has been dead twelve years.”

“Not long enough.”

“So you spent eleven years beside me for revenge?”

“At first.”

“And later?”

Her eyes changed.

“Later I realized you had something Adrian never did.”

“What?”

“A conscience.”

Dominic almost laughed.

“You say that like an insult.”

“It made you harder to destroy.”

She explained.

She had found Adrian while researching old Vale accounts.

Instead of exposing him, she recruited him.

His anger provided motive.

His identity provided legitimacy.

Marcus eventually discovered them.

Rather than kill him, Adrian tried to convert him.

Marcus played along.

Then Elena found the room.

Everything began collapsing.

“You ordered Adrian to threaten Lily.”

Rebecca looked annoyed.

“I told him to contain Elena.”

“Children were never supposed to be involved?”

“No.”

Dominic stared.

“Is that supposed to redeem you?”

“No.”

At least she did not pretend.

Rebecca moved slightly toward the gun.

Dominic noticed.

“So tomorrow’s raid?”

“Still happening.”

“Based on false evidence.”

“Based on evidence already inside federal systems.”

“And your confession?”

“I haven’t confessed.”

Dominic touched the button on his coat.

Rebecca’s face changed.

Recording.

She reached for the gun.

Russell entered.

“Don’t.”

Marcus came behind him.

Rebecca froze.

Her eyes moved between them.

Then she laughed.

“You think this changes anything?”

Dominic picked up the gun.

“It changes enough.”

Rebecca shook her head.

“You still don’t understand.”

“What?”

“The raid is not the final stage.”

Dominic waited.

She looked up toward the mansion.

“The final stage began ten minutes ago.”

A deep mechanical sound echoed through the underground corridor.

Russell turned.

“What was that?”

Dominic recognized it.

The estate’s emergency fire system.

Then every light went out.

Red emergency lamps came on.

Marcus checked his phone.

“No signal.”

From above came the sound of doors automatically unlocking.

Dominic stared at Rebecca.

She smiled.

“You wanted to know what the final stage was?”

A distant alarm began to scream.

Rebecca leaned closer.

May you like

“It was never about arresting you.”

Then, from somewhere upstairs, Lily screamed.
