Chapter 2 - The Room Beneath the Marble

The hidden room was not a forgotten cellar.
It was an office.
A fully operational one.
Three monitors stood on a desk.
A printer rested beside boxes of files.
A small generator hummed against one wall.
Security photographs covered another.
Dominic recognized every location.
His Atlantic City hotel.
His Manhattan office.
His mother’s grave.
Lily’s school.
He entered slowly.
Russell cursed under his breath.
Elena stayed close to the doorway.
Dominic walked to the desk.
The phone that had been ringing sat there.
Its screen now showed one missed call.
Blocked number.
Beside it was a thick black binder.
Dominic opened it.
Bank transfers.
Shell companies.
Names.
Dates.
Amounts.
Some belonged to legitimate businesses Dominic controlled.
Others did not.
He turned another page.
His signature appeared at the bottom of a wire authorization.
A perfect copy.
Another page.
Another signature.
Someone had been moving millions of dollars through accounts carrying Dominic’s name.
Russell leaned closer.
“That looks real.”
“It isn’t.”
“You’re certain?”
Dominic looked at him.
“I know what I sign.”
Elena spoke behind them.
“That isn’t what frightened me.”
Dominic turned.
“What did?”
She pointed to a drawer.
“The photographs.”
Dominic opened it.
Dozens of pictures lay inside.
Employees.
Drivers.
Business associates.
Judges.
Police officers.
Family members.
Some had red circles around their faces.
Others had dates written beneath them.
Dominic picked up one photograph.
It showed Elena walking Lily home from school.
Taken from across the street.
He looked at Elena.
She folded her arms around herself.
“I found that one three days ago.”
“How did you get down here?”
“Marcus asked me to help move furniture in the foyer.”
“Why?”
“He said there had been water damage.”
Dominic glanced at the ceiling.
No signs of water.
“He opened the floor?”
“Yes.”
“He brought me downstairs. He said there was an old storage room that needed cleaning before contractors arrived.”
“And then?”
“I started working.”
Elena’s voice shook.
“I noticed the steel door was open.”
“Marcus left it open?”
“He got a phone call and walked back upstairs.”
“What did you see?”
“Files.”
She looked at the photographs.
“And pictures of Lily.”
Dominic’s fingers tightened around the photograph.
“I heard him coming back. I tried to leave.”
“What happened?”
“He knew I’d seen it.”
Russell asked, “Why keep you alive?”
Elena looked at him.
“I don’t know.”
Dominic did.
“Because a missing maid attracts less attention than a dead one found under my home.”
Silence.
Russell looked uncomfortable.
Dominic put the photograph down.
“Marcus told everyone Elena ran away.”
“Yes,” Russell said.
“So he expected me to believe it.”
Russell nodded cautiously.
Dominic walked to the computer.
Password screen.
He entered Marcus’s birthday.
Denied.
He tried a company code Marcus often used.
Denied.
Elena said, “Try Lily’s birthday.”
Dominic turned.
“What?”
“I heard Marcus ask me once when Lily was born.”
“Why?”
“I thought he was making conversation.”
Dominic entered the date.
The computer unlocked.
Russell stared.
Dominic did not.
People who believed themselves clever often became predictable.
Folders filled the desktop.
PAYMENTS.
SURVEILLANCE.
LEVERAGE.
VALE.
Dominic clicked VALE.
Inside were more folders.
ROUTES.
ACCOUNTS.
PERSONAL.
SUCCESSION.
The last word bothered him.
He clicked SUCCESSION.
A document opened.
VALE TRANSITION PLAN.
Dominic read silently.
Russell read over his shoulder.
Stage One: Financial isolation.
Stage Two: Internal distrust.
Stage Three: Legal exposure.
Stage Four: Leadership transfer.
Leadership transfer.
Dominic scrolled.
At the bottom appeared a name.
Not Marcus Kane.
Russell Dane.
The room went silent.
Russell stepped backward.
Dominic turned his chair slowly.
Russell’s face had changed.
“Dominic, I have never seen that document.”
“Your name is on it.”
“I can see that.”
“You’re listed as successor.”
“I didn’t write it.”
Elena moved toward the door.
One of the guards instinctively shifted with her.
Dominic noticed everything.
“Put your weapons on the table.”
Both guards stared.
Russell said, “Boss—”
“All of you.”
Russell removed his pistol first.
Placed it down.
The guards followed.
Dominic took them.
“You think I’m involved?” Russell asked.
“I think someone wants me to.”
“That could be Marcus.”
“It could.”
“Then why disarm me?”
“Because whoever built this room wants me suspicious of everyone.”
Dominic looked at the files again.
“And it’s working.”
They brought Elena upstairs.
Lily ran from the kitchen the moment she saw her mother.
“Mommy!”
Elena dropped to her knees.
The child crashed into her arms.
For the first time since Dominic entered the estate, Elena began to cry.
Not loudly.
She simply held Lily against her chest and shook.
Dominic looked away.
He ordered Mrs. Alvarez to prepare food and call a physician he trusted.
No police.
Not yet.
This problem was larger than one imprisonment.
Marcus Kane was gone.
His bedroom had been searched.
Half his clothes remained.
His car sat in the garage.
His phone was found smashed behind the guesthouse.
Dominic gathered his senior people in the library.
Russell.
Security officers.
Accountant Henry Cole.
Attorney Rebecca Sloan.
Operations manager Paul Mercer.
Dominic stood before the fireplace.
“Marcus is missing.”
Nobody spoke.
“Someone built an office under this house.”
Now they reacted.
Rebecca frowned.
Henry looked genuinely stunned.
Paul swore.
Dominic continued.
“Financial records have been falsified. My signature has been forged. People connected to this organization have been watched.”
“By Marcus?” Henry asked.
“Possibly.”
Rebecca said, “How much money?”
“At least twelve million from what I saw.”
Henry’s face went white.
“That’s impossible.”
“Why?”
“I reconcile the accounts.”
Dominic looked at him.
“Apparently not all of them.”
Henry swallowed.
Rebecca asked the obvious question.
“Who benefits?”
Dominic looked around the room.
“That’s what we’re going to discover.”
His phone vibrated.
A text message.
Unknown number.
He opened it.
YOU FOUND THE ROOM.
A second message arrived.
NOW ASK YOURSELF WHY ELENA WAS LEFT ALIVE.
Dominic stared.
Then a photograph appeared.
Taken only moments earlier.
Inside the library.
It showed Dominic standing exactly where he stood now.
Someone was watching them live.
May you like
Dominic raised his eyes toward the ceiling.
And the chandelier camera blinked once.
