Chapter 7 - The Truth Behind Victor’s Loyalty

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The old chapel stood frozen beneath the storm.

The rain struck the stone walls.

The wind pushed against the wooden doors.

And outside…

the woman Alessandro Moretti had trusted his entire life was waiting for him.

His aunt.

The person who had comforted him after his father’s death.

The person who had told him that family was the only thing a man could truly rely on.

The person who had just been exposed as the architect behind his downfall.

Alessandro looked at Victor.

Twenty-five years of memories passed through his mind.

The first business deal.

The first victory.

The first betrayal they survived together.

All those years.

All those moments.

And now he knew Victor had been hiding something.

But he also knew something else.

Victor had just risked everything to save Sophia.

A guilty man could run.

A guilty man could hide.

A guilty man could have allowed Alessandro to take the wrong medicine until his body finally gave up.

But Victor had brought the truth to him.

Even if it was late.

Even if it was painful.

“Why?” Alessandro finally asked.

Victor looked at him.

The question was not about the recording.

It was not about the medication.

It was about everything.

“Why did you protect her?”

Victor looked toward Sophia.

The little girl was still holding Alessandro’s hand.

“Because I remembered what I promised your father.”

Alessandro became still.

“My father?”

Victor nodded.

“Twenty-five years ago.”

The old man looked toward the altar.

“Before he died.”

The storm outside became louder.

Alessandro’s expression changed.

“Tell me.”

Victor took a deep breath.

“There are things you were never supposed to know.”

“That is what everyone says before they reveal a lie.”

Victor accepted the accusation.

“You’re right.”

A pause.

“I lied to you.”

The honesty surprised Alessandro.

“But not because I wanted your power.”

Victor’s voice became heavier.

“I lied because I was afraid.”

Alessandro stared at him.

“Afraid of my aunt?”

Victor nodded.

“Afraid of what she would do if the truth came out.”

Twenty-five years earlier.

Before Alessandro Moretti became the man everyone feared…

he was simply a young man trying to understand why his father died.

The official story had always been simple.

A car accident.

A rainy night.

A tragic mistake.

Everyone accepted it.

Everyone except Victor.

Because Victor had been there.

Not at the accident.

But before it.

The night before Alessandro’s father died, he had called Victor.

He sounded worried.

Different.

Not like a businessman.

Not like a powerful man.

Like a father who knew something terrible was coming.

“He told me something was wrong inside the family,” Victor said.

Alessandro listened carefully.

“What did he say?”

Victor looked at him.

“He said someone close to him was planning to take control.”

Alessandro’s hands tightened.

“Who?”

Victor shook his head.

“He never said.”

“Why?”

“Because he believed names could become dangerous.”

Alessandro almost laughed.

“My father was afraid?”

Victor looked at him.

“Yes.”

That answer hurt.

Because Alessandro had spent his whole life believing his father was fearless.

A legend.

A man who never backed down.

But maybe legends were only people who hid their fear better than others.

“What else did he tell you?”

Victor reached into his pocket.

He removed another small envelope.

Different from the one before.

Older.

More damaged.

“I found this after his death.”

Alessandro stared.

“You kept it for twenty-five years?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Victor looked ashamed.

“Because I was a coward.”

The answer was unexpected.

Alessandro said nothing.

“I thought keeping the secret would protect you.”

Victor looked down.

“But secrets don’t protect people.”

He looked back up.

“They destroy them slowly.”

Alessandro opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

His father’s handwriting.

Again.

Only a few lines.

Alessandro,

If something happens to me, do not trust anyone who claims they are acting for the family.

Power changes people. Fear changes people. But the most dangerous thing is someone who believes they deserve what belongs to you.

Alessandro read the words twice.

Then again.

Because suddenly, everything made sense.

The medication.

The weakness.

The inheritance.

The control.

His aunt did not want him dead.

She wanted him dependent.

She wanted the empire to remain technically his…

while someone else controlled every decision.

A perfect crime.

A perfect betrayal.

The chapel doors opened.

Everyone turned.

A woman stood outside.

Elegant.

Calm.

Completely untouched by the storm.

Claudia Moretti.

Alessandro’s aunt.

She looked older than he remembered.

But her eyes were exactly the same.

Cold.

Calculating.

“Alessandro.”

Her voice was gentle.

Almost loving.

That was the most dangerous part.

He had learned that real enemies rarely looked like enemies.

Sometimes they looked like family.

“Claudia.”

She looked at Sophia.

Then Victor.

Then back at Alessandro.

“You have caused a lot of unnecessary chaos.”

Alessandro almost smiled.

“Chaos?”

“Yes.”

She stepped into the chapel.

“You were supposed to rest.”

The words were disturbing.

Not because of what she said.

Because of how casually she said them.

“You knew about the medicine.”

She did not deny it.

“I knew you were becoming reckless.”

“Reckless?”

“You were destroying everything your father built.”

Alessandro stared.

“So you decided to control me.”

“I decided to save this family.”

Victor stepped forward.

“No.”

Claudia looked at him.

“You always were weak, Victor.”

His face changed.

“You used him.”

She smiled.

“I gave him purpose.”

“You destroyed his loyalty.”

“No.”

She looked at Alessandro.

“He destroyed himself by trusting too easily.”

The words were designed to hurt.

And they did.

Because there was a small part of Alessandro that wondered if she was right.

Had he trusted too much?

Had he ignored warning signs?

Had he allowed people close enough to hurt him?

Sophia suddenly spoke.

“You’re the bad lady.”

Everyone looked at her.

Claudia stared.

A strange expression appeared.

Almost amusement.

“You’re the child.”

Sophia nodded.

“You changed the medicine.”

The room became silent.

Claudia’s smile disappeared.

Only slightly.

But Alessandro saw it.

A five-year-old child had done what years of investigation could not.

She made Claudia lose control.

“How much did you hear?”

Claudia asked.

Sophia held Alessandro’s hand tighter.

“I heard enough.”

Claudia looked at Alessandro.

“You really believe a child?”

Alessandro looked down at Sophia.

Then back at his aunt.

“Yes.”

The answer was immediate.

Because that was the difference.

Everyone else had given him reasons to doubt.

Sophia had only given him truth.

Claudia sighed.

“You have no idea what you are doing.”

“No.”

Alessandro stepped forward.

“You have no idea what you created.”

A pause.

“You spent months trying to make me weak.”

His eyes hardened.

“But you made one mistake.”

Claudia looked at him.

“What mistake?”

Alessandro glanced at Sophia.

“You underestimated the person who was watching.”

For the first time…

Claudia looked uncertain.

Only for a second.

But it was there.

And Alessandro knew.

The battle had changed.

Because Claudia had spent years believing power came from controlling people.

But she had forgotten something.

The truth did not need power.

It only needed one person brave enough to speak.

And Sophia had already done that.

Later that night, after Claudia was taken away for questioning, Alessandro sat quietly in his office.

The mansion was different.

Not because the walls changed.

Not because the danger disappeared.

But because Alessandro finally understood something.

Trust was not about how long someone stayed beside you.

Victor had stayed twenty-five years.

Yet still kept secrets.

Sophia had known him for only a few days.

Yet saved his life.

The difference was not time.

It was intention.

Victor entered the office.

Slowly.

“I understand if you never forgive me.”

Alessandro looked at him.

For a long moment, neither spoke.

Then Alessandro said:

“I don’t know if I can.”

Victor nodded.

“I understand.”

“But…”

Victor looked up.

“You saved Sophia.”

A pause.

“And you finally told me the truth.”

Victor lowered his eyes.

“I should have done it sooner.”

“Yes.”

Alessandro stood.

“You should have.”

The old man accepted that.

Then Alessandro walked toward the window.

Outside, the rain had stopped.

For the first time in weeks, the sky was clear.

But Alessandro knew something.

The danger was not over.

Because Claudia’s betrayal had revealed only one layer.

There was still one question left.

Who helped her?

Who funded the operation?

Who helped change the medicine?

And why did Marco Moretti disappear for twelve years?

Because as Alessandro looked at the documents on his desk, one thing became clear.

Claudia was not the beginning of the betrayal.

She was only one piece.

May you like

And somewhere in the shadows…

someone else was still watching.
