Chapter 5 - The Hidden Enemy Inside the Mansion

Alessandro Moretti had spent his entire life preparing for enemies.

He knew how to recognize greed.

He knew how to recognize fear.

He knew how to recognize ambition hidden behind polite smiles.

But betrayal from someone inside his own family was something he had never prepared himself for.

The name written on the document sat in front of him like a threat.

A name he had not heard in years.

A name connected to memories he had buried.

Marco Moretti.

His younger cousin.

The man who had disappeared from the Moretti family after a failed business deal twelve years earlier.

The man everyone believed had left Italy forever.

The man Alessandro thought he would never see again.

Until now.

Alessandro picked up the document again.

The connection was clear.

Financial transfers.

Private meetings.

A network of hidden companies.

And Victor Salvatore was somehow standing in the middle of all of it.

The person Alessandro trusted most…

had been meeting the person Alessandro had spent years trying to forget.

Gabriel watched him carefully.

“Sir.”

Alessandro did not answer.

“Do you want us to bring Victor in?”

The question was simple.

But the answer was complicated.

Because Alessandro Moretti knew something about people.

A person who betrayed you was dangerous.

But a person who betrayed you for a reason you did not understand…

was even more dangerous.

“No.”

Gabriel looked surprised.

“No?”

“Not yet.”

“Why?”

Alessandro looked at the photograph.

“Because Victor is hiding something.”

Gabriel waited.

“But I don’t think he is the one controlling this.”

The security chief nodded slowly.

“So we follow him.”

“Yes.”

“And Marco?”

Alessandro’s expression hardened.

“We find him.”

The next morning, Alessandro did something nobody expected.

He went to see Sophia.

Not because he needed information.

Not because he wanted answers.

But because he wanted to make sure she was safe.

He found her in the mansion garden sitting beneath an old olive tree.

She was drawing again.

Children had a strange way of creating beauty in places filled with darkness.

The mansion had always been a place of power.

A place where men discussed money, influence, and secrets.

But beneath that tree, all Alessandro saw was a little girl drawing flowers with colorful crayons.

He walked closer.

Sophia looked up.

“Are you angry?”

The question surprised him.

“No.”

“Are you going to hurt the bad man?”

Alessandro stopped.

Children asked questions adults avoided.

He sat beside her.

“Why do you think I would?”

“Because your face looks like my mommy’s face when she’s scared.”

That answer stayed with him.

Because it was true.

His face had become a weapon.

People feared it.

Respected it.

Avoided it.

But a child saw something else.

A tired man.

A man carrying too much.

“Sometimes,” Alessandro said carefully, “being angry doesn’t mean you want to hurt someone.”

Sophia looked at him.

“What does it mean?”

“It means you know something wrong happened.”

She thought about that.

Then nodded.

“That’s why I told you about the pill.”

Alessandro looked at her.

“Why did you tell me?”

The little girl looked confused.

“Because you were going to take it.”

“And?”

“And it was wrong.”

A simple answer.

A powerful answer.

Sophia did not care about his reputation.

She did not care about his money.

She did not care how many people feared him.

She saw someone in danger.

And she helped.

Alessandro looked away for a moment.

He had spent his life surrounded by adults who wanted something from him.

Respect.

Money.

Protection.

Power.

But this little girl wanted nothing.

And somehow…

that made her the most trustworthy person in his world.

That afternoon, Gabriel returned with new information.

“We found Marco.”

Alessandro looked up immediately.

“Where?”

“Switzerland.”

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

“Doing what?”

Gabriel placed a file on the desk.

“Living under a different name.”

Alessandro opened the file.

A photograph.

Marco Moretti.

Older.

Different.

But unmistakable.

“He never left.”

“No.”

Gabriel paused.

“He was building something.”

Alessandro looked at the documents.

A company.

Private investments.

Acquisitions.

Slowly collecting pieces of the Moretti empire.

Without anyone noticing.

“He wanted control.”

Gabriel nodded.

“But there’s something strange.”

“What?”

“Marco alone couldn’t do this.”

Alessandro looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because whoever changed your medication had access to the mansion.”

Silence.

Gabriel continued.

“Marco has never entered this house in twelve years.”

Alessandro leaned back.

“So he needed someone inside.”

“Yes.”

The answer was obvious.

Someone inside.

Someone close.

Someone trusted.

The list became smaller.

And more painful.

That evening, Alessandro called Victor.

“Meet me.”

A pause.

“Where?”

“The old vineyard.”

Victor was silent.

The vineyard was where they had made their first deal together.

Where they celebrated their first success.

Where they promised they would never betray each other.

Victor arrived twenty minutes later.

The sunset covered the fields in gold.

For a moment, it almost looked peaceful.

Almost.

“You found Marco.”

It was not a question.

Alessandro noticed.

“You knew I would.”

Victor looked away.

“Yes.”

“How long have you known where he was?”

Victor did not answer.

“How long?”

“Two years.”

Alessandro felt something break inside.

Not anger.

Disappointment.

“You lied to me.”

Victor looked at him.

“I protected you.”

“No.”

Alessandro stepped closer.

“You protected a secret.”

Victor lowered his eyes.

“I thought I could handle it.”

“Handle what?”

Victor was silent.

Finally, he said:

“Marco contacted me two years ago.”

“And?”

“He wanted revenge.”

Alessandro’s expression remained cold.

“Against me?”

Victor nodded.

“Why?”

Victor looked at the vineyard.

“Because he believed you stole everything from him.”

Alessandro laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

“Marco destroyed his own company.”

“I know.”

“He betrayed our family.”

“I know.”

“He lost everything because of his own choices.”

Victor looked at him.

“Yes.”

“Then why protect him?”

Victor’s eyes became filled with regret.

“Because he had something I didn’t know how to ignore.”

Alessandro waited.

“He had information about your father.”

The world seemed to stop.

Alessandro’s father.

A subject almost nobody mentioned.

A wound buried for decades.

“What information?”

Victor hesitated.

“Your father’s death wasn’t exactly what you were told.”

Alessandro stared.

“My father died in an accident.”

“That is what you were told.”

The air changed.

Because Alessandro realized something.

This was not just about his medication.

Not just about power.

Not just about control.

This was about the past.

A past someone had spent years hiding.

“Victor.”

His voice became dangerous.

“Tell me everything.”

Victor looked at him.

“I can’t.”

Alessandro’s eyes narrowed.

“Again?”

“Because I don’t have everything.”

“What do you have?”

Victor reached into his coat.

He pulled out an old envelope.

Yellowed.

Damaged.

A letter.

Alessandro looked at it.

“Where did you get that?”

“From Marco.”

“Why give it to me now?”

Victor looked toward the darkening sky.

“Because I realized something.”

“What?”

“That whoever is behind this…”

He handed Alessandro the envelope.

“Is not trying to take your empire.”

Alessandro opened it.

Inside was a single page.

Only a few sentences.

But one line made his hands stop.

Alessandro, if you are reading this, it means someone close to you has already betrayed you.

His father’s handwriting.

Impossible.

The letter continued:

Do not trust the person who tells you they are protecting you.

Alessandro looked up.

Victor was watching him.

And for the first time…

Alessandro wondered if Victor had been protecting him…

or protecting the truth from him.

Suddenly, his phone rang.

Gabriel.

Alessandro answered.

“What happened?”

Gabriel’s voice was urgent.

“Sir…”

A pause.

“You need to return to the mansion immediately.”

“Why?”

Another pause.

“Because Sophia is missing.”

The world went silent.

Alessandro’s grip tightened around the phone.

“What did you say?”

“She disappeared ten minutes ago.”

“Who was with her?”

Gabriel hesitated.

Then answered:

“Victor.”

Alessandro looked at the man standing in front of him.

The man he had trusted for twenty-five years.

The man holding secrets.

The man who claimed he was protecting him.

And suddenly…

the most terrifying possibility appeared.

Maybe Victor was not trying to save Sophia.

Maybe he was taking her away because she knew too much.

Alessandro’s voice became cold.

“Find my car.”

He turned toward the mansion.

“Now.”

Because for the first time in his life…

May you like

Alessandro Moretti was not afraid of losing power.

He was afraid of losing the little girl who had saved his life.
