Chapter 6 - The Final Dose and the Deadly Betrayal

The drive back to the Moretti mansion felt longer than any journey Alessandro Moretti had ever taken.
The road was the same.
The hills were the same.
The old trees lining the private entrance were the same.
But everything felt different.
Because for the first time in years, Alessandro was not returning to protect his business.
Not returning to negotiate.
Not returning to confront an enemy.
He was returning because a child was missing.
A child who had no power.
No influence.
No protection.
A child who had simply seen something wrong and decided to tell the truth.
The same truth that powerful adults had tried to hide.
The black car moved through the rain at impossible speed.
Alessandro sat in the back seat, staring at Sophia’s drawing still folded inside his jacket.
The house.
The people.
The mysterious man standing outside.
He had spent decades analyzing criminals.
Studying enemies.
Understanding how people manipulated fear.
But Sophia’s drawing had shown him something he had forgotten.
Sometimes the smallest witness saw the biggest secrets.
His phone rang.
Gabriel.
“Tell me you found her.”
There was silence.
That was worse than bad news.
“Gabriel.”
“We found the vehicle.”
Alessandro’s hand tightened.
“Where is Sophia?”
“We don’t know yet.”
The answer made his voice colder.
“What happened?”
“The security cameras showed Victor leaving with her.”
Alessandro closed his eyes.
For a moment, the pain was not anger.
It was disappointment.
Because somewhere inside him, despite everything…
he still wanted Victor to be innocent.
“He took her willingly?”
“No.”
Gabriel hesitated.
“She was not afraid of him.”
That stopped Alessandro.
“What do you mean?”
“The footage shows Sophia walking beside Victor.”
Alessandro frowned.
“She trusted him.”
“Yes.”
That changed everything.
A kidnapper dragged children.
A kidnapper threatened them.
But Sophia had walked beside Victor.
Which meant she believed she was safe.
Alessandro looked out the window.
Something was wrong.
Very wrong.
When Alessandro arrived at the mansion, the entire security team was waiting.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody needed to.
The tension filled the air.
“Show me the footage.”
They entered the security room.
The screen displayed the hallway camera.
Victor appeared.
Sophia stood beside him holding her stuffed bear.
She did not look scared.
She looked confused.
Victor bent down and said something to her.
The audio was unclear.
Gabriel increased the volume.
Static.
Then a few words became audible.
“...trust me…”
Alessandro froze.
Victor.
Trust me.
The same words he had used for twenty-five years.
The footage continued.
Sophia nodded.
Then she took Victor’s hand.
Alessandro looked away.
Because somehow, that hurt more than betrayal.
The child trusted him.
The same way Alessandro once had.
“Where did they go?”
Gabriel pointed.
“The old chapel.”
Alessandro turned.
“The abandoned one?”
“Yes.”
The old Moretti family chapel had not been used in years.
It sat on the edge of the property.
A forgotten place.
A place filled with memories.
A place where Alessandro’s father had brought him as a child.
A place connected to the past Victor had mentioned.
Alessandro walked toward the exit.
Gabriel followed.
“Sir.”
Alessandro stopped.
“What?”
“If Victor wanted Sophia gone…”
Gabriel paused.
“He would not take her somewhere on your property.”
Alessandro looked at him.
“You think he’s protecting her?”
“I think we need to know before we decide.”
Alessandro hated that Gabriel was right.
Because emotions were dangerous.
Especially for men like him.
Anger made decisions easier.
Truth made them harder.
The old chapel stood beneath the storm.
Its stone walls were covered in moss.
The wooden doors creaked open as Alessandro approached.
Inside, candles were burning.
Someone had been there recently.
Alessandro entered slowly.
Then he heard a voice.
“You came alone.”
Victor.
Alessandro looked toward the altar.
Victor stood there.
Sophia sat beside him.
Safe.
Alive.
The little girl looked up immediately.
“Sir.”
Relief moved through Alessandro before he could stop it.
He walked toward her.
But Victor raised a hand.
“Wait.”
Alessandro stopped.
His expression became cold.
“You took her.”
“Yes.”
“Explain.”
Victor looked exhausted.
Not dangerous.
Not confident.
Just tired.
“I needed her away from the house.”
“Why?”
“Because they were coming for her.”
Alessandro stared.
“Who?”
Victor looked toward the door.
“Marco’s people.”
Silence.
“You expect me to believe that?”
“No.”
Victor looked at him.
“I expect you to understand.”
Alessandro stepped closer.
“You disappeared with the only witness who can expose the person behind this.”
“I disappeared with the only witness who can survive long enough to expose them.”
The answer was immediate.
And Alessandro hated that it sounded honest.
Sophia looked between them.
“Mr. Victor said the bad man knows about me.”
Alessandro looked at her.
“Who?”
Sophia shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
Victor spoke quietly.
“But I do.”
Alessandro turned.
“Then tell me.”
Victor looked at the old chapel walls.
“I made a mistake twenty-five years ago.”
That sentence surprised Alessandro.
Victor rarely admitted mistakes.
“I thought loyalty meant protecting someone no matter what.”
A pause.
“But sometimes protecting someone means telling them the truth.”
Alessandro waited.
Victor took a deep breath.
“The person behind this is not Marco.”
Alessandro’s expression changed.
“Then who?”
Victor looked directly at him.
“The person who ordered the medication change…”
He paused.
“The person who erased the security footage…”
Another pause.
“The person who has been controlling everything from inside this family…”
Victor’s voice lowered.
“Is your aunt.”
The words echoed through the chapel.
Alessandro stared.
Impossible.
His aunt.
The woman who had raised him after his father died.
The woman who had always told him family mattered.
The woman who had cried at his father’s funeral.
“No.”
Victor looked down.
“I wish it wasn’t true.”
Alessandro’s jaw tightened.
“Proof.”
Victor reached into his coat.
He pulled out a small device.
“A recording.”
He pressed the button.
A woman’s voice filled the chapel.
Older.
Calm.
Cold.
Victor’s blood ran cold.
Because he recognized it instantly.
His aunt.
“I don’t need him dead.”
The recording continued.
“I need him weak.”
A second voice answered.
Marco.
“But he will discover the medication.”
The woman laughed softly.
“Not if Victor continues preparing it.”
Alessandro stopped breathing.
Victor closed his eyes.
The recording continued.
“Alessandro trusts Victor more than anyone.”
The woman said.
“That trust will destroy him.”
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Not Alessandro.
Not Victor.
Not even Sophia.
Because the truth was finally standing in front of them.
The betrayal was not outside the family.
It was inside.
And the person who knew Alessandro best…
was the person who wanted to control him.
A sound suddenly came from outside the chapel.
Footsteps.
Multiple people.
Victor’s expression changed.
“They found us.”
Gabriel reached for his weapon.
Alessandro immediately moved toward Sophia.
The little girl grabbed his hand.
“Are we safe?”
Alessandro looked down at her.
For years, people feared him because of what he could do.
But standing there, protecting a five-year-old child, he realized something.
Power was not about making people afraid.
Power was about protecting those who could not protect themselves.
He squeezed Sophia’s hand.
“Yes.”
The doors of the chapel shook.
Someone was trying to enter.
Victor moved beside Alessandro.
For the first time in days, they stood together.
Not as enemies.
Not as friends.
As two men who knew they had one chance left.
The door cracked open.
A voice came from the darkness.
“Alessandro.”
A familiar voice.
His aunt.
The woman who had betrayed him.
“Come outside.”
Alessandro stared at the door.
Then at Victor.
Then at Sophia.
And he understood.
The final battle had never been about the medication.
The medication was only the beginning.

The real war…
was for the truth his family had buried for decades.
