Chapter 5 - The War That Shook New York

The night Isabella Vieri returned, New York stopped sleeping.

For years, people had whispered about the power of the Moretti family.

They whispered about the money.

The influence.

The men who disappeared after crossing them.

They whispered about Damiano Moretti like he was something more than human.

A man who never lost.

A man who always knew his enemy’s next move.

A man who could walk into a room full of criminals and make them feel like they were the ones being judged.

But nobody understood something important.

Even the strongest walls could fall.

Not because someone was stronger.

But because someone knew exactly where to strike.

And Isabella Vieri knew exactly where Damiano’s heart was.

She knew about me.

She knew about Emma.

And now, she knew the one thing that could destroy the man who had spent his entire life protecting himself.

He finally had something to lose.

The warning came at 3:17 in the morning.

I remembered the time because I was awake.

I had barely slept since the night of the assassination attempt.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Emma standing in that hallway.

I saw the fear in her face.

I saw the blinking red light under the desk.

I saw the moment Damiano realized someone close to him had betrayed him.

But that night, the thing that woke me wasn’t a nightmare.

It was silence.

A strange silence.

The kind that didn’t belong in a house filled with guards.

I sat up in bed.

Emma was sleeping beside me.

After everything that happened, Damiano had moved us into a private guest wing closer to the security center.

He said it was safer.

I wanted to argue.

I wanted to say Emma deserved a normal room.

A normal home.

A normal life.

But when I saw the armed guards outside the hallway and the way Damiano looked every time he checked on her...

I knew this was his version of keeping a promise.

I quietly got out of bed and walked toward the door.

Before I could open it, my phone vibrated.

One message.

Unknown number.

My heart stopped.

I stared at the screen.

The message contained only one sentence.

You should have left when he told you to.

A second message arrived.

A photograph.

My blood turned cold.

It was a picture of Emma.

Sleeping.

Taken inside the mansion.

Inside our room.

Someone had been there.

Someone had been close enough to take that picture.

I dropped the phone.

And for the first time since entering Damiano Moretti’s world...

I understood something.

We were not protected.

We were being hunted.

The entire mansion was awake within seconds.

Security teams filled the halls.

Doors were locked.

Every camera was reviewed.

Every person inside the house was questioned.

Damiano arrived within minutes.

He didn’t run.

He never ran.

But I saw the difference.

The controlled calm he always carried was gone.

Not completely.

But enough.

Enough for me to see the man beneath the legend.

“What happened?” he asked.

I handed him my phone.

He looked at the message.

Then the photograph.

The room changed.

His expression became empty.

Too empty.

“Where was this taken?”

“In Emma’s room.”

His eyes lifted.

“Who had access?”

Nobody answered.

Because everyone knew the answer.

Someone inside.

Again.

Damiano slowly placed the phone on the table.

“Lock every exit.”

His security chief nodded.

“Already done.”

“No.”

Damiano’s voice was colder.

“Lock every exit from the city.”

Everyone froze.

The order was bigger than the mansion.

Bigger than one person.

He wasn’t searching anymore.

He was preparing.

The war had started.

By sunrise, the first attack happened.

Not against the mansion.

Against the Moretti empire.

Three major businesses connected to Damiano were targeted.

Financial accounts were frozen.

Private information was leaked.

Two trusted employees disappeared.

And then came the message.

A video.

Sent directly to Damiano.

Everyone gathered in the security room.

I stood behind him, holding Emma’s hand.

I didn’t want her to see.

But she refused to leave.

“She’s my friend,” Emma whispered.

I looked down.

“Who?”

She pointed at the screen.

“Lily’s enemy.”

The innocence of that sentence almost broke me.

Because Emma didn’t understand Mafia wars.

She didn’t understand revenge.

She only understood that the woman who frightened her was bad.

The video began.

Isabella Vieri appeared.

Perfect as always.

Beautiful.

Calm.

Not a trace of fear.

“Damiano.”

Her voice filled the room.

“You always believed control was everything.”

She smiled.

“That was your weakness.”

Damiano watched without moving.

“You built an empire.”

Isabella continued.

“You built walls around yourself.”

A pause.

“But you forgot something.”

Her eyes changed.

“You are still human.”

The video cut.

Silence.

Nobody spoke.

Then Damiano stood.

“I want every location she has ever visited.”

His security team moved instantly.

I watched him.

“You knew she would come after you.”

“Yes.”

“But not like this.”

“No.”

His jaw tightened.

“Not through Emma.”

That afternoon, I found Damiano alone in his office.

The same office where everything had started.

He stood beside the desk.

A new desk.

A replacement.

But somehow, it felt like the old one was still there.

“You blame yourself,” I said.

He didn’t turn around.

“I should have seen it.”

“You couldn’t.”

“I should have protected you sooner.”

I walked closer.

“Damiano.”

He looked at me.

The pain in his eyes surprised me.

“I spent my entire life learning how to recognize enemies.”

He looked toward the window.

“I learned how to negotiate with criminals. How to survive betrayal. How to win wars.”

A pause.

“But I never learned how to protect people I care about.”

My heart tightened.

Because that was the first time he admitted he cared.

Not as an obligation.

Not as a debt.

As something real.

“You saved us.”

His expression hardened.

“That wasn’t enough.”

“Yes, it was.”

“No.”

His voice cracked slightly.

“She got close.”

I stepped closer.

“But she failed.”

He looked at me.

“Because of Emma.”

“Yes.”

“And because of you.”

The room became quiet.

Damiano looked away.

“You shouldn’t believe in me.”

“Why?”

“Because men like me don’t get happy endings.”

I stared at him.

Maybe another person would have believed that.

Maybe another person would have seen only the Mafia boss.

The dangerous man.

The king of a world built on fear.

But I saw the man who stayed beside my daughter during a nightmare.

The man who listened to a little girl talk about a broken doll.

The man who promised to protect us even when he knew it could destroy him.

“You’re wrong.”

His eyes returned to mine.

“You don’t get to decide that.”

That evening, Emma found something.

Something nobody expected.

She was drawing in the library while the adults searched through thousands of documents.

I was sitting beside her when she suddenly looked up.

“Mommy.”

“Yes?”

“I know the lady.”

My body went still.

“What?”

“The shiny lady.”

I turned toward her.

“What do you mean?”

“She came here before.”

“When?”

Emma thought.

“Before the party.”

I frowned.

“Are you sure?”

She nodded.

“She talked to Mr. Moretti.”

My heart raced.

“Where?”

“The garden.”

I immediately called Damiano.

Minutes later, we were reviewing security footage.

And there she was.

Isabella.

Standing in the garden.

Talking to Damiano.

But the date on the footage made everyone silent.

It wasn’t from yesterday.

It wasn’t from last week.

It was from three months ago.

Three months before the assassination attempt.

Three months before anyone suspected anything.

Damiano watched the footage carefully.

Then Isabella said something.

The audio was damaged.

But one sentence was clear.

She looked at Damiano and said:

“Soon, you will understand why I had to do this.”

The room went silent.

Because suddenly, the truth became more complicated.

Isabella wasn’t just trying to kill him.

She believed she was justified.

And somewhere beneath the betrayal...

There was a secret.

A secret connected to Damiano’s past.

A secret that could change everything.

Damiano stared at the screen.

For the first time, he looked uncertain.

Not afraid.

Not defeated.

But uncertain.

And that frightened me more than anything.

Because the enemy outside wasn’t just someone trying to destroy him.

She was someone who knew a part of him that even he had buried.

And as the city prepared for war...

May you like

The biggest battle Damiano Moretti would ever fight wasn’t against Isabella Vieri.

It was against the truth.
