Chapter 4 - The Mafia King’s Promise To Protect Us

I used to think promises were just words.
Beautiful sentences people said when they wanted you to believe them.
My father made promises he never kept.
People I trusted made promises they eventually forgot.
Life had taught me that words were easy.
Actions were what mattered.
And yet, standing inside that mansion with the most feared man in New York, I found myself believing a promise made by someone everyone else feared.
Damiano Moretti promised to protect us.
And somehow, I knew he meant every word.
The morning after the assassination attempt felt strangely quiet.
Too quiet.
The kind of quiet that comes after a storm when everyone is waiting to see what gets destroyed.
The Moretti mansion was still under lockdown.
Security guards stood at every entrance.
Cars remained parked behind reinforced gates.
Nobody moved without permission.
The peace agreement between the five Mafia families had been postponed indefinitely.
The entire city was waiting.
Waiting to see what Damiano Moretti would do next.
Everyone knew he would retaliate.
The only question was how.
But while the rest of the world saw a powerful Mafia boss preparing for revenge, I saw something different.
I saw a man sitting across from my daughter during breakfast, carefully cutting a piece of fruit into small pieces because she couldn’t reach the knife.
It was almost impossible to believe.
The same man whose name made grown men nervous was now listening seriously while a six-year-old girl explained why her rag doll needed a new dress.
“Her name is Lily,” Emma said.
Damiano looked at the old doll sitting beside her plate.
“Lily?”
Emma nodded.
“She’s been with me since I was a baby.”
Damiano studied the doll.
“She looks like she has survived a lot.”
Emma smiled slightly.
“She has.”
A strange warmth filled my chest.
Because I realized something.
Damiano Moretti understood survival.
Maybe that was why he understood Emma.
They were both people who had learned how to carry wounds without showing them.
“Mr. Moretti?”
Emma tilted her head.
“Yes?”
“Do you have a favorite toy?”
The question caught him completely off guard.
I almost smiled.
Nobody asked Damiano Moretti questions like that.
People asked him about money.
Power.
Business.
Enemies.
Nobody asked about childhood.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he quietly answered:
“No.”
Emma frowned.
“Everyone has something.”
Damiano looked down.
And for the first time, I saw a glimpse of the boy he used to be.
“I had a wooden horse.”
Emma’s eyes widened.
“What happened to it?”
A pause.
“I lost it.”
“Where?”
“In a place I never went back to.”
The answer was simple.
But the sadness behind it was not.
Emma seemed to understand.
Children often understood pain better than adults.
She reached over and pushed her own doll closer to him.
“You can borrow Lily.”
Damiano looked at her.
“You’re giving me your favorite toy?”
“Only for a little while.”
“Why?”
“Because you look like you need something.”
I looked away.
Because somehow, those innocent words hit harder than any threat.
Later that afternoon, Damiano called me into his private office.
The same office where the device had been found.
The place that could have become a crime scene.
Now, everything had been removed.
The desk had been replaced.
The walls had been inspected.
The room looked exactly the same.
But I knew it wasn’t.
Because everyone inside it had changed.
Damiano stood near the window.
A file sat on his desk.
“Sophia.”
I stepped inside.
“You wanted to see me?”
He nodded.
“I need to tell you something.”
The seriousness in his voice immediately made me nervous.
“What happened?”
“We found Isabella.”
My heart stopped.
“You found her?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“Not far from the city.”
I waited.
“But she escaped before my men reached her.”
I felt a strange mixture of fear and anger.
“She knew you were coming.”
“Yes.”
“How?”
Damiano looked at the file.
“Because someone warned her.”
Another betrayal.
Another person inside.
“How many people are involved?”
“We don’t know yet.”
His answer bothered me.
Because Damiano Moretti was a man who always knew.
He planned everything.
Controlled everything.
But now there was something he couldn’t control.
A hidden enemy inside his own world.
“She knows about Emma,” I said quietly.
Damiano’s expression changed immediately.
“Yes.”
“And that makes her dangerous.”
“Yes.”
I looked at him.
“Then why am I still here?”
The question came out before I could stop it.
Damiano looked surprised.
Not because he didn’t understand.
Because he did.
“You think I should send you away.”
“I think Emma deserves a normal life.”
His face became serious.
“She deserves safety.”
“She deserves school. Friends. A childhood.”
“And you think I can’t give her that?”
I hesitated.
Because that wasn’t what I meant.
But maybe it was what he heard.
“I think your world is dangerous.”
Damiano walked closer.
“My world was dangerous before you and Emma entered it.”
His voice lowered.
“But you didn’t create this danger.”
I looked at him.
“Then why do you care?”
A long silence followed.
The kind of silence where someone decides whether to tell the truth.
Finally, he said:
“Because your daughter walked into a room where every person there would have died... and instead of running away, she warned me.”
He looked toward the door.
“She was brave when everyone else was blind.”
His eyes returned to mine.
“I owe her.”
“You don’t owe her.”
“Yes.”
His voice became firm.
“I do.”
That evening, the truth about Isabella Vieri finally began to surface.
Damiano’s team uncovered old records.
Hidden accounts.
Secret meetings.
Connections nobody expected.
Isabella wasn’t working alone.
She had been building relationships with rival families for years.
But there was something strange.
She never asked for money.
She never demanded power.
She never tried to take over Damiano’s organization.
She wanted something else.
Revenge.
When Damiano showed me the documents, I saw something I didn’t expect.
A photograph.
A younger Isabella.
Standing beside a man.
A man I recognized.
“Who is that?”
Damiano looked at the picture.
“My father’s former advisor.”
“What happened to him?”
His expression hardened.
“He died fifteen years ago.”
“And Isabella blamed you?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Damiano was quiet.
Then he answered:
“Because she believed my family destroyed hers.”
I looked at him.
“Did you?”
“No.”
The answer came instantly.
But there was something else.
Something he wasn’t saying.
“You know more.”
Damiano looked away.
“There are things from my father’s past I never told anyone.”
“Why?”
“Because some secrets are buried for a reason.”
I studied his face.
“And now?”
“Now they are coming back.”
That night, something happened that changed the way I saw Damiano forever.
Emma had a nightmare.
I heard her crying from the hallway.
I rushed into her room.
But someone was already there.
Damiano.
He stood beside her bed, holding Lily the rag doll.
I froze.
“What are you doing?”
He looked at me.
“She called my name.”
Emma was asleep again, but her small hand was holding onto his finger.
A powerful Mafia boss.
A man feared by thousands.
Standing beside a child’s bed because she had a bad dream.
It was a picture nobody in New York would believe.
Damiano noticed me watching.
“She was scared.”
“So you stayed?”
“Yes.”
The answer was simple.
No explanation.
No excuse.
Just yes.
I walked closer.
“Damiano.”
It was the first time I said his name without a title.
He noticed.
But he didn’t correct me.
“She trusts you.”
His eyes moved to Emma.
“She shouldn’t.”
“Why?”
“Because everyone I care about gets hurt.”
The words were quiet.
Almost a confession.
I looked at the man standing in the dark.
The man everyone called a monster.
And I finally understood.
The reason he pushed people away wasn’t because he had no heart.
It was because he had too much of one.
And he had spent years believing love was a weakness enemies could use.
But Emma didn’t see a weakness.
She saw someone who needed kindness.
Someone who needed family.
Someone who had been alone for far too long.
Damiano gently placed Lily beside Emma.
Then he stood.
“I made a promise.”
I looked at him.
“What promise?”
His eyes were serious.
“To protect her.”
A pause.
“And you.”
I felt my breath catch.
“Damiano…”
“No matter what happens.”
His voice was steady.
“No matter who comes after me.”
“No matter how powerful they are.”
He looked toward Emma.
“Nobody touches my family.”
The word stayed between us.
My family.
Not his organization.
Not his empire.
Not his business.
Family.
And neither of us realized it yet...
But that promise would soon be tested.
Because Isabella Vieri was preparing her next move.
May you like
And this time, she wasn’t trying to kill Damiano Moretti.
She was going to destroy the one thing he had finally allowed himself to love.
