Chapter 3 - The Woman Behind The Betrayal

I used to believe that danger announced itself.

I thought dangerous people looked dangerous.

I thought you could recognize evil by the way someone walked, the way they spoke, or the darkness in their eyes.

But I was wrong.

The most dangerous people were often the ones who smiled the most.

The ones who offered you a hand.

The ones who stood beside you for years while quietly waiting for the perfect moment to destroy everything you loved.

And that was the lesson I learned the night I discovered who had been standing closest to Damiano Moretti all along.

The mansion remained locked down for hours.

Nobody entered.

Nobody left.

The five Mafia leaders who had traveled from different parts of the country for the peace agreement were moved to separate secure rooms while Damiano’s team investigated the assassination attempt.

The meeting that was supposed to change the future of New York had become a search for a traitor.

And everyone was a suspect.

Including the people who had spent years earning Damiano’s trust.

I stayed inside the west parlor with Emma.

At least, I tried to.

But staying calm was impossible.

Every sound outside the door made me nervous.

Every shadow moving past the windows made me wonder if someone was coming for us.

I had spent years working around powerful people.

I had seen arguments.

I had seen threats.

I had seen men with expensive suits and dangerous reputations enter the mansion and leave with everyone suddenly silent.

But I had never seen fear like this.

Not from the employees.

Not from the guards.

Not even from the Mafia bosses.

Because everyone understood one thing.

Someone had betrayed Damiano Moretti.

And if there was one rule everyone knew about him, it was this:

He forgave very few things.

But betrayal was not one of them.

Around midnight, the door opened.

This time, I knew who it was before I looked.

Damiano.

He stepped inside, removing his jacket and loosening his tie slightly.

For the first time since I met him, he looked tired.

Not weak.

Never weak.

But exhausted.

Like he was carrying the weight of every person depending on him.

Emma immediately looked up from the sofa.

“Did you catch the bad person?”

The question was so simple.

So innocent.

But it made the room quiet.

Damiano looked at her.

Then he walked closer.

“We are still looking.”

Emma frowned.

“Why?”

He paused.

Because the answer was complicated.

Because the truth was ugly.

“Because sometimes the person who hurts you is someone you never expected.”

Emma looked down at her doll.

“Like the shiny lady?”

Something changed in Damiano’s expression.

A small reaction.

But I noticed.

“You remember her?”

Emma nodded.

“She was smiling.”

“Was she nice to you?”

The little girl thought for a moment.

Then slowly shook her head.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because nice people don’t make you scared.”

Damiano stared at her.

I watched him carefully.

The way he listened to Emma was different from the way he listened to adults.

With adults, he searched for lies.

With Emma, he searched for truth.

“Can you tell me anything else about her?” he asked.

Emma looked at me first.

I gave her a small nod.

She turned back.

“She had a necklace.”

“What kind?”

“A circle.”

Damiano’s face became completely still.

“What color?”

“Gold.”

The room went silent.

I didn’t know what that meant.

But he did.

“Mr. Moretti?”

He didn’t answer immediately.

His eyes moved toward the window.

Finally, he spoke.

“She was wearing the Moretti family symbol.”

A cold feeling moved through me.

“You mean she was part of your family?”

Damiano looked at me.

“Not family.”

A pause.

“Almost.”

Twenty minutes later, I learned the name of the woman who had almost killed everyone in that room.

Isabella Vieri.

Beautiful.

Elegant.

Brilliant.

And according to everyone in the mansion, completely loyal.

She had worked with Damiano for almost seven years.

She managed charity events.

She handled important social relationships.

She attended family gatherings.

She knew the mansion.

She knew the security system.

She knew the habits of everyone who worked there.

Most importantly...

She knew Damiano.

Too well.

I watched security footage with Damiano’s team from a monitor room.

The footage showed Isabella walking through the hallway earlier that evening.

She looked calm.

Perfect.

Almost too perfect.

She wore a silver evening dress exactly like Emma described.

Her blonde hair was carefully styled.

Her smile never disappeared.

She looked like someone attending a celebration.

Not someone preparing a murder.

“She had access to the office?” I asked.

Damiano stood behind me.

“Yes.”

“How?”

“She was trusted.”

I turned toward him.

“You really trusted her?”

His silence answered.

I regretted asking immediately.

Because for a brief moment, I saw something behind his expression.

Pain.

Not because she tried to kill him.

Because he had believed in her.

“Why would someone close to you do this?”

Damiano looked back at the screen.

“Power.”

“That’s it?”

“Power changes people.”

I shook my head.

“No. People who want power usually show it.”

Damiano looked at me.

I continued:

“She didn’t want people to know she wanted something.”

That made him pause.

“You think she planned this carefully.”

“Yes.”

I looked at the screen.

“She wanted everyone to think she was innocent.”

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then Damiano’s security chief entered the room.

“Boss.”

Damiano turned.

“We found something.”

The man placed a folder on the table.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Records.

I didn’t understand most of it.

But Damiano did.

His face became colder with every page.

“What is it?”

The security chief hesitated.

“Isabella has been moving money through several accounts.”

“How long?”

“Almost two years.”

Two years.

She had been planning something for two years.

Not a sudden betrayal.

Not an emotional decision.

A carefully built operation.

Damiano picked up another document.

Then stopped.

“What?”

The security chief looked uncomfortable.

“There’s more.”

Damiano stared at him.

“Say it.”

“The device wasn’t just meant to kill you.”

The room went quiet.

“What does that mean?”

The man looked at me.

Then at Emma.

“It was designed to destroy the entire office.”

My stomach dropped.

“The entire office?”

“Yes.”

Damiano’s expression darkened.

“The meeting.”

The security chief nodded.

“All five families were supposed to be inside.”

I understood.

This wasn’t only an attack against Damiano.

It was an attack against peace itself.

Someone wanted the war to continue.

Someone wanted all those families destroyed.

Someone wanted New York to burn.

Later that night, I found Damiano alone in the mansion library.

The room was dark except for the fireplace.

He stood near the window, looking out over the city.

The same city he controlled.

The same city that could collapse because of one person’s betrayal.

“You should sleep,” I said.

He didn’t turn around.

“Neither should you.”

“I’m not the one hunting someone who tried to kill me.”

A faint expression crossed his face.

Almost a smile.

Almost.

“You are not afraid of me.”

It wasn’t a question.

I thought about it.

“I probably should be.”

“Yes.”

“But I’m not.”

“Why?”

I looked at him.

“Because you saved my daughter.”

Silence.

Then he turned.

“I didn’t save her.”

“You protected her.”

“That’s different.”

“No.”

I stepped closer.

“It’s not.”

For a moment, we just stood there.

Two people from completely different worlds.

Me.

A single mother trying to survive.

Him.

A man whose decisions could change an entire city.

But somehow, because of Emma, those two worlds had collided.

Damiano looked away.

“When this is over, you should leave.”

The words surprised me.

“What?”

“You and Emma.”

My chest tightened.

“You’re telling us to leave?”

“I’m telling you that being near me is dangerous.”

I looked at him.

“Then why did you promise to protect us?”

His eyes met mine.

“Because I meant it.”

“Then don’t push us away.”

For the first time, Damiano Moretti looked like a man fighting himself.

Not a Mafia boss.

Not a king.

Just a man.

A man who had spent his entire life believing caring about someone was a weakness.

Then Emma walked into his life.

And changed the rules.

A small voice suddenly came from the doorway.

“Mr. Moretti?”

We both turned.

Emma stood there holding her doll.

I immediately walked toward her.

“Emma, sweetheart, you should be sleeping.”

She looked at Damiano.

Then she said something that made both of us freeze.

“You’re sad.”

Damiano stared at her.

“I’m fine.”

Emma shook her head.

“No.”

She hugged her doll.

“Your eyes look like the man with sad eyes.”

The room became completely silent.

Because Emma had noticed something nobody else had.

The same sadness.

The same hidden pain.

The same loneliness.

Damiano slowly walked toward her.

Then he knelt down.

“You think I’m sad?”

Emma nodded.

“Because someone you liked hurt you.”

For a moment, the most feared man in New York had no answer.

Then he whispered:

“Yes.”

Emma reached out and touched his hand.

A simple gesture.

A child’s gesture.

But somehow, it broke through years of walls.

“I’m sorry.”

Damiano looked at her small hand holding his.

And I saw something change.

Something that would change everything.

Because that night, Damiano Moretti did not just discover a traitor.

He discovered that the little girl who exposed the secret under his desk was the only person in his world who could see the man behind the legend.

And somewhere in the darkness outside the mansion...

The woman who started the war was still watching.

Waiting.

May you like

Because Isabella Vieri had not lost yet.

And she was about to reveal the secret that would destroy Damiano Moretti forever.
