Chapter 5 - The Betrayal Inside the Moretti Empire

Luca’s heart stopped inside the church.

Elena performed chest compressions while Matteo called for the medical team waiting outside. Rain blew through the broken windows, mixing with dust and blood across the stone floor.

“Come back,” she whispered with every compression. “You made me promise to say it again.”

The portable defibrillator charged.

Elena placed the pads against his chest.

“Clear.”

His body jerked.

No pulse.

She shocked him again.

Nothing.

Nathan knelt nearby, his face pale.

“Elena…”

“Don’t.”

She continued.

Her arms burned. Her vision blurred. She could hear the doctors approaching, but she would not move away from Luca.

“You don’t get to die,” she said through tears. “Not after dragging me into your impossible life. Not after making me love you.”

The monitor suddenly produced a weak rhythm.

A pulse returned beneath her fingers.

Elena bowed over him, trembling with relief.

Luca was transported to a private surgical facility beneath the Moretti tower. For six hours, Elena waited outside the operating room with blood drying on her uniform.

Isabella Moretti arrived just before dawn.

She stopped when she saw Elena.

“What happened?”

“Salvatore happened.”

Isabella’s face changed. “My brother-in-law?”

“He ordered Luca’s attack. He killed your younger son.”

The older woman swayed.

Matteo caught her arm.

“No,” she whispered. “Marco died in a fire.”

“A fire Salvatore arranged.”

Isabella lowered herself into a chair.

For the first time, she did not look like the intimidating matriarch who had threatened Elena in a hospital hallway. She looked like a mother discovering she had trusted her child’s murderer for years.

“I welcomed him into my home,” Isabella said. “He stood beside Marco’s coffin.”

Elena sat across from her.

“He fooled everyone.”

“Not Luca.”

“Luca suspected Celeste, not Salvatore.”

“I pushed him toward that engagement.” Isabella covered her mouth. “I told him peace required sacrifice.”

Elena’s anger softened.

“We can’t change what happened.”

“You still defend me after the way I treated you.”

“I’m not defending you.”

The direct answer surprised Isabella.

Elena continued, “You judged me before speaking to me. You treated me as though my job made me less worthy than Celeste. You should regret that. But Luca is fighting for his life, and he will need both of us when he wakes.”

“If he wakes.”

“He will.”

“How can you be certain?”

“Because he promised.”

Hours later, the surgeon emerged.

The bulletproof vest had prevented a fatal wound, but the impact had reopened internal injuries. Luca had lost a dangerous amount of blood.

“He’s stable,” the surgeon said. “The next twenty-four hours are critical.”

Elena stayed beside him.

Isabella did too.

For most of the day, neither woman spoke.

At sunset, Luca moved his fingers.

Elena immediately leaned forward.

His eyes opened slowly.

“You’re late,” he whispered.

“For what?”

“Saying it again.”

She laughed through her tears.

“I love you.”

His gaze softened.

“Again.”

“I love you.”

Isabella rose from her chair. “I’ll give you privacy.”

Luca looked toward his mother.

She stopped.

“Marco,” he said.

Her face crumpled.

“I know.”

For a moment, the powerful Moretti family disappeared. A grieving mother took her surviving son’s hand, and Luca allowed himself to be her child.

“I’m sorry,” Isabella whispered. “I should have listened to you.”

“So should I.”

She kissed his forehead and left.

Elena sat beside him.

“We have a problem,” she said.

“Only one?”

“Salvatore has the key to my father’s safety deposit box.”

“He’ll go to the old bank.”

“Your men are watching it.”

“Yes.”

“He’ll expect that.”

“Yes.”

“Then what is the plan?”

Luca’s expression became calculating.

“We let him open the vault.”

Two nights later, Salvatore entered the abandoned bank through an underground tunnel.

He believed he had avoided the Moretti surveillance teams. What he did not know was that Nathan had installed tracking software on Celeste’s car months earlier. Salvatore had stolen that vehicle after leaving the church.

Every movement led Luca directly to him.

Elena was furious when Luca insisted on going.

“You survived another surgery forty-eight hours ago.”

“I won’t be fighting.”

“You say that as though bullets respect plans.”

Luca adjusted the black coat concealing his bandages. “I spent years searching for the truth about Marco. I need to hear Salvatore admit it.”

“Then I’m coming.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

“Absolutely not.”

Elena folded her arms. “Try stopping me without reopening your wound.”

Luca looked at Matteo.

Matteo wisely looked away.

Luca exhaled. “You stay behind me.”

“You stay beside me.”

“Behind.”

“Beside.”

His mouth twitched. “You negotiate like a criminal.”

“I learned from you.”

The old bank smelled of dust and rust. Luca, Elena, Matteo, and Nathan watched through hidden cameras as Salvatore entered the underground vault.

Rows of metal boxes lined the walls.

He found box 317 and inserted the silver key.

Inside rested a leather ledger, a flash drive, and an envelope bearing Elena’s name.

Salvatore removed them.

The vault lights turned on.

Luca stepped through the steel doorway.

“Looking for something?”

Salvatore froze.

Moretti soldiers appeared behind him.

He slowly raised his hands. “You should be in bed.”

“You should be dead.”

Salvatore smiled sadly. “Your father used to say the same thing.”

“You murdered him too, didn’t you?”

Silence answered.

Luca’s face hardened.

Elena looked at him. He had suspected it, but hearing confirmation wounded him.

Salvatore placed the ledger on the table.

“Your father became a liability. Marco discovered too much. Michael Carter would have exposed everything. Every empire requires sacrifice.”

“You sacrificed everyone except yourself,” Luca said.

“I built what you inherited.”

“You poisoned our name.”

“I made it feared.”

Luca approached him.

Salvatore smiled. “Go ahead. Kill me. Become exactly what I trained you to be.”

Luca raised his gun.

Elena did not stop him this time.

This choice belonged to him.

For several seconds, uncle and nephew faced each other across decades of blood.

Then Luca lowered the weapon.

“You want to die as a Moretti,” he said. “I won’t give you that honor.”

Police sirens sounded above the bank.

Salvatore’s expression changed.

“You called the police?”

“I called federal agents, state investigators, and three reporters. Every record in that ledger was copied before you entered.”

“You exposed the family.”

“No. I exposed you.”

Salvatore lunged toward Elena.

Nathan intercepted him.

They crashed into the metal boxes. Salvatore pulled a hidden knife and stabbed Nathan in the side.

Elena screamed.

Luca fired once.

The bullet struck Salvatore’s leg.

He fell.

Matteo restrained him while Elena rushed to her brother.

Nathan’s blood covered her hands.

“Stay with me.”

He smiled weakly. “You always say that.”

“You’re going to be fine.”

“I’m sorry, Elena.”

“Save your strength.”

“For Mom. For leaving you. For everything.”

She pressed against the wound.

“You can apologize after surgery.”

Federal agents entered the vault.

Salvatore was taken away in handcuffs, cursing Luca’s name.

The ledger contained enough evidence to expose corrupt officials, trafficking networks, and decades of financial crimes.

It also contained Michael Carter’s original notes.

Elena opened the envelope her father had left.

Inside was a letter.

My dearest Elena, if you are reading this, I was unable to protect our family. Do not spend your life chasing revenge. Evil has a way of turning everyone who fights it into another version of itself. Choose the people who make you brave without making you cruel. That will be your victory.

Elena looked at Luca.

He stood several feet away, watching agents carry away evidence that could destroy portions of his own empire.

“What will happen to you?” she asked.

“I don’t know.”

“The ledger contains Moretti operations.”

“Some.”

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“And you still released it.”

“My empire was built on secrets Salvatore created. I won’t ask you to live inside a lie.”

“You may lose everything.”

Luca approached her.

“Not everything.”

His hand touched her cheek.

For the first time, Elena understood the true power of Luca Moretti.

It was not his army.

It was not his money.

It was his willingness to burn down the throne beneath him rather than let darkness touch the woman he loved.

But Salvatore’s arrest did not end the war.

Three days later, Victor Sanz announced that Luca had betrayed every family in New York.

He called the mafia councils together.

Their judgment was unanimous.

Luca Moretti had to die.

And anyone standing beside him would die first.
