Chapter 4 - The Night the Devil Came for His Queen

The old church stood abandoned near the Brooklyn waterfront, surrounded by empty factories and rusted shipping containers. Rain hammered the roof as Luca’s armored convoy stopped two blocks away.

Elena wore a bulletproof vest beneath a black coat.

Luca had insisted.

He wore one as well, although the pressure against his wounds made every breath painful.

“You are staying in the vehicle,” he said.

“The message demanded me.”

“That doesn’t mean I intend to obey.”

“If they see your men and don’t see me, they may kill Nathan.”

Luca checked his weapon. “Your brother helped create the ambush that nearly killed me.”

“He is still my brother.”

“And you are still the woman I’m responsible for keeping alive.”

“I never asked you to be responsible for me.”

“No.” He looked directly at her. “You only made yourself impossible for me to lose.”

Elena had not answered when he declared his love in the penthouse.

There had been no time.

Now his words hung between them, dangerous and beautiful.

“You don’t love me,” she said softly. “You barely know me.”

“I know you argue when you’re frightened. I know you touch the necklace your father gave you whenever you’re thinking about him. I know you drink coffee after midnight even though it makes your hands shake. I know you forgive people who don’t deserve it, but you punish yourself for mistakes that were never yours.”

Elena stared at him.

Luca continued, “I know the sound of your voice brought me back from death. That is enough for me.”

Before she could respond, Matteo opened the vehicle door.

“Movement near the north entrance.”

Luca stepped out.

Rain immediately darkened his black coat.

Moretti soldiers surrounded the block, moving through the shadows without sound.

Elena followed.

Luca turned. “I told you to stay inside.”

“And I told you Nathan may die.”

“You’re stubborn.”

“You noticed.”

Despite the danger, something close to pride appeared in his expression.

They entered the church through a side door.

Candles burned along the center aisle. Their warm light revealed broken pews, cracked statues, and water dripping from the damaged ceiling.

Nathan sat tied to a chair before the altar.

Celeste stood behind him.

Victor Sanz stood beside her with a pistol.

And near the ruined cross stood Salvatore Moretti.

Luca’s uncle wore an elegant gray suit and carried no visible weapon.

He smiled warmly.

“Nephew.”

Luca stopped halfway down the aisle.

“Uncle.”

Elena felt the betrayal behind the single word.

Salvatore’s silver hair and gentle face made him look like a respected grandfather, not the architect of decades of murder.

“I had hoped Nathan was lying,” Luca said.

“He lies often,” Salvatore replied. “But not tonight.”

“Why?”

Salvatore sighed. “Your father was sentimental. He believed the family existed to protect people. He left money on the table because he cared about neighborhoods, workers, old promises. I wanted an empire.”

“So you poisoned Michael Carter.”

“He discovered irregularities.”

“You killed Marco.”

Celeste’s expression shifted.

Salvatore looked at her. “She made the call. I started the fire.”

Luca’s face became empty.

Elena recognized the stillness now.

It appeared whenever his anger became too great to show.

Celeste moved closer to Salvatore. “Marco was weak.”

Luca raised his gun.

Victor immediately pressed his weapon against Nathan’s head.

“One more inch,” Victor warned, “and her brother dies.”

Nathan closed his eyes.

Elena stepped forward.

Luca caught her arm.

Celeste smiled. “There she is. The little nurse who imagined saving one man made her important.”

“I never wanted his power,” Elena said.

“That is what makes you dangerous. Luca believes you love him.”

Elena looked at him.

Rainwater ran from his hair. Pain had drained color from his face, but he stood before an army of enemies without fear.

“I do,” Elena said.

Luca’s eyes changed.

Celeste’s smile disappeared.

Elena continued, “I love the man who walked out of a hospital bed because his mother threatened me. The man who spared my brother because I asked. The man who has been betrayed so often he mistakes protection for control.”

Luca almost smiled.

“Even now,” Elena said, “he’s standing between me and three guns.”

Salvatore clapped slowly. “Touching.”

Luca’s gaze remained on Elena. “You chose an interesting time to tell me.”

“You chose an interesting time to fall in love.”

Victor shouted, “Enough!”

He pulled Nathan’s head back.

Salvatore looked at Elena. “Your father hid a ledger containing records of every route, payment, and officer I controlled. Nathan believes you know where it is.”

“I don’t.”

“Your father left you a necklace.”

Elena touched the silver pendant at her throat.

Luca noticed.

“So did Salvatore.

“Give it to me,” the older man ordered.

Elena slowly removed the necklace.

The pendant was a small silver key.

Her father had given it to her two days before he died. She had believed it opened a jewelry box that had been lost when her mother moved.

Now she understood.

“Where is the lock?” she asked.

Nathan opened his eyes. “Dad’s safety deposit box.”

“Which bank?”

“The old Moretti Community Bank in Queens. It closed ten years ago, but the vault is still beneath the building.”

Salvatore’s patience disappeared. “Throw me the key.”

Elena held it tightly.

“If I do, you release Nathan.”

“Of course.”

Luca whispered, “He won’t.”

“I know.”

Elena threw the necklace.

Every eye followed it.

Luca fired.

The bullet struck Victor’s shoulder. Nathan threw himself sideways as Matteo and the Moretti soldiers broke through the stained-glass windows.

Chaos erupted.

Celeste fired toward Elena.

Luca moved in front of her.

The bullet struck his vest directly over his wounded ribs, knocking him to the ground.

“Elena!” he shouted.

She crawled behind a stone column.

Nathan overturned the chair and kicked Victor’s injured leg. Matteo reached him and cut his restraints.

Gunfire echoed through the church.

Salvatore grabbed the necklace and ran toward the rear door.

Luca forced himself upright.

Blood appeared at his mouth.

Elena grabbed his coat. “You’re hurt.”

“Stay with Matteo.”

He moved after Salvatore.

Celeste stepped from behind a pew and raised her weapon at Luca’s back.

Elena saw her first.

She grabbed a fallen candle stand and swung it into Celeste’s arm.

The gun fired into the ceiling.

Celeste turned on her with a scream and struck Elena across the face.

They fell between the pews.

Celeste reached for the gun.

Elena caught her wrist.

“You stole everything from me!” Celeste shouted.

“You never had him.”

“I was supposed to become his wife.”

“You wanted his name.”

“And you wanted nothing. That’s why he worships you.”

Celeste pushed Elena backward and seized the pistol.

Before she could fire, Luca appeared.

He aimed directly at her.

Celeste froze.

For the first time, fear replaced her arrogance.

“Luca,” she whispered. “You wouldn’t.”

He stood over Elena like a wounded avenging angel.

“You used my brother.”

“I was young.”

“You helped murder him.”

“Salvatore forced me.”

“You led gunmen into my home.”

“I loved you.”

“No,” Luca said. “You loved standing beside my throne.”

Celeste lowered her weapon.

“We can fix this.”

Luca’s eyes held no mercy.

Elena touched his arm.

“Don’t.”

He looked down at her.

“She tried to kill you.”

“And she failed.”

“She killed Marco.”

“That decision will haunt you if you make it in anger.”

“I have killed for less.”

“I know.”

The sadness in Elena’s voice reached him.

Luca lowered his gun slightly.

Celeste saw an opportunity and raised hers.

A shot exploded.

Celeste collapsed.

Matteo stood behind her, smoke rising from his weapon.

“She made the decision for you,” he said.

Luca helped Elena stand.

“Salvatore?” she asked.

“Gone,” Luca replied.

Nathan approached holding his injured arm.

“He has the key.”

Elena looked at the empty doorway.

“Then he’ll go to the bank.”

Luca nodded.

“And we’ll be waiting.”

His knees suddenly buckled.

Elena caught him before he struck the floor.

Blood had soaked through his bandages beneath the vest.

“Luca!”

He looked up at her as his eyes began to close.

“You said you loved me.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“This is not the time.”

“It’s the only thing I want to hear.”

She pressed her hands against his wound.

“I love you.”

A faint smile touched his lips.

“Say it again when I wake.”

“You’re going to wake.”

“Threatening me?”

“Encouraging you.”

His fingers found hers.

Then his body went still.

For the second time, Elena felt Luca Moretti’s life slipping away beneath her hands.

But this time, she was not merely his nurse.

May you like

She was the woman who loved him.

And she refused to let the Devil of Manhattan die before he learned how to live.
