Chapter 4 - The Daughter Nobody Knew

The woman standing outside the private dining room did not look afraid.

That was the first thing Lazero noticed.

Most people who stood in front of him showed fear.

They avoided his eyes.

They hesitated before speaking.

They measured every word.

But this woman looked directly at him.

Like she had been waiting years for this moment.

“Lazero Stone.”

Her voice was soft.

But the room became silent.

Callie froze.

Not because she recognized the woman.

Because she recognized the voice.

The voice from the past.

The voice connected to the night everything disappeared.

Lazero slowly stepped forward.

“Who are you?”

The woman looked at Callie first.

Then back at him.

“My name is Elena.”

The name hit the room like a weapon.

Lazero stopped breathing for a second.

The name he had heard whispered as a child.

The name his father refused to explain.

The name connected to the night Victor Stone vanished.

“You’re dead.”

The woman’s expression changed slightly.

Not sadness.

Not anger.

Something closer to disappointment.

“That is what they wanted you to believe.”

Nobody spoke.

Callie looked at Lazero.

She could see the confusion in his eyes.

The same confusion she had carried for years.

Elena stepped into the room.

The door closed behind her.

Adrian watched carefully.

For once, he was not smiling.

Because Elena being alive changed everything.

“You knew,” Lazero said.

He looked at Callie.

“You knew she was alive.”

Callie opened her mouth.

But no words came out.

Because she did not know.

Not completely.

She had spent years searching for Elena.

She had found pieces.

Records.

Hidden messages.

Old photographs.

But she had never found proof.

Until now.

“I thought she was gone,” Callie finally said.

Lazero looked at her.

“You thought?”

“Yes.”

His eyes hardened.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“No.”

The answer surprised him.

Callie stepped closer.

“I expect you to believe that I have been searching for the truth just like you.”

Elena watched them quietly.

Then she looked at the folder on the table.

“You found Victor’s files.”

Lazero turned toward her.

“You knew my father.”

Elena nodded.

“Yes.”

“What was she to him?”

The question was directed at Callie.

But Elena answered.

“She was the person your father trusted most.”

Everyone looked at Callie.

She looked down.

Because that was the truth she had hidden.

Not because she was ashamed.

Because she was afraid.

Victor Stone had not been just a powerful man.

He had been the only person who helped her after her entire world collapsed.

Years ago, when Callie was young, she had watched her family lose everything because of a secret involving the Stone organization.

Everyone told her to run.

Everyone told her powerful people could never be trusted.

But Victor Stone had been different.

He found her.

He protected her.

He taught her how to survive.

And before he disappeared, he gave her one final instruction.

Protect Lazero.

At the time, she hated the idea.

Why should she protect the son of the man connected to everything she lost?

But Victor had told her something she never forgot.

“Lazero is not his father.”

Those words stayed with her.

Because years later, she discovered Victor was right.

Lazero was not the monster people described.

He was a man carrying the consequences of someone else’s sins.

“You worked for my father,” Lazero said.

Callie nodded.

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Before I met you.”

A painful silence followed.

Lazero looked away.

He had spent years trusting very few people.

And the one person he trusted most had been hiding the biggest secret.

But then he looked at Elena.

“And you?”

Elena lowered her eyes.

“I was supposed to disappear forever.”

“Why?”

She hesitated.

Because the answer was dangerous.

“Because your father found out something he was never supposed to know.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“And because someone wanted him silent.”

Lazero looked at Adrian.

“You know who?”

Adrian smiled slightly.

“I know more than anyone.”

Callie immediately looked at him.

“Do not trust him.”

Lazero noticed.

“Why?”

Callie’s expression became serious.

“Because Adrian Vale was there that night.”

The room changed.

Lazero looked at Adrian.

“What night?”

“The night your father disappeared.”

Adrian did not deny it.

That was worse.

“You were involved?”

Adrian looked at the city outside.

“Yes.”

Lazero’s jaw tightened.

“Explain.”

Adrian turned back.

“Your father discovered a network inside his own organization.”

“Who?”

Adrian looked at the three of them.

“People close to him.”

Callie’s expression changed.

Because she knew what that meant.

Someone inside.

Someone trusted.

Someone who had access.

“Your father was trying to expose them,” Adrian continued.

“But he failed.”

Lazero stared.

“What happened to him?”

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Elena spoke.

“He survived.”

Lazero looked at her.

“What?”

Elena walked closer.

“Your father did not disappear.”

A pause.

“He was taken.”

The room went completely silent.

For years, Lazero believed his father abandoned him.

That he chose power over family.

That he left without looking back.

But now everything was changing.

“My entire life…”

His voice became quiet.

“I thought he left me.”

Elena looked at him.

“He was trying to protect you.”

Lazero laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because it hurt.

“Everyone says that.”

He looked at Callie.

“Everyone says they were protecting me.”

Callie felt the weight of those words.

Because she knew she deserved them.

“I’m sorry.”

Lazero looked at her.

And for the first time, he saw something different.

Not a secretary.

Not an investigator.

Not someone hiding information.

A woman who had carried a burden alone for years.

But before he could respond, Adrian’s phone vibrated again.

Everyone looked.

Adrian checked the screen.

His face changed.

“What?”

Elena asked.

Adrian slowly raised his eyes.

“They found us.”

Callie immediately reached for her weapon.

Lazero noticed.

“You carry a gun?”

She looked at him.

“Yes.”

Another secret.

Another hidden piece.

But this time, he was not surprised.

Because he was finally understanding.

Callie Garrison had never been ordinary.

The lights in the hallway suddenly went dark.

A heavy sound echoed outside.

Someone had entered the restaurant.

Not one person.

Several.

Elena moved toward the back door.

“Lazero, you need to leave.”

He looked at her.

“Who is coming?”

Nobody answered.

Then a voice came from the hallway.

A voice Lazero recognized.

A voice he had not heard in fifteen years.

The private dining room door slowly opened.

And the man standing outside said:

“Hello, son.”
