Chapter 2 - The Woman Behind the Secret

The lights went out for exactly seven seconds.

Seven seconds was enough time for someone to kill a man.

Everyone in the private dining room knew that.

The first sound was a chair moving.

The second was a glass breaking.

The third was the quiet click of a weapon being prepared.

But Callie Garrison did not move.

She sat beside Lazero Stone, her fingers resting calmly on the table.

The darkness surrounded them.

Men who had spent their entire lives making others afraid were suddenly afraid themselves.

“Stay where you are,” Lazero said.

His voice cut through the room.

Everyone listened.

Because Lazero Stone never raised his voice.

He never needed to.

A man like him could control a room with a whisper.

The emergency lights turned on.

The room returned to a dim red glow.

Everyone looked around.

No one was injured.

No one was missing.

But Callie was looking at one person.

The man near the window.

The man who had not moved.

Lazero followed her eyes.

“You knew.”

It was not a question.

Callie slowly looked at him.

“I suspected.”

The men around the table exchanged confused looks.

One of them laughed nervously.

“You suspected the lights would go out?”

Callie turned toward him.

“No.”

She paused.

“I suspected someone wanted us to think the lights going out was the attack.”

The room became silent.

The older men looked uncomfortable.

Because they understood what she meant.

The blackout was not the danger.

It was a distraction.

Lazero leaned back in his chair.

For three years, he had watched Callie organize meetings, answer phones, and take notes.

He had seen her as someone useful.

Someone reliable.

But tonight, he was seeing something else.

A person who had been hiding in plain sight.

“Tell me how you know,” Lazero said.

Callie looked at the three suspicious men.

“The man by the window never reached for a weapon.”

Everyone looked at him.

“He wanted everyone to believe he was protecting himself.”

She pointed toward another man.

“The second man kept his drink untouched because he was waiting for something.”

Then she looked at the third.

“And the third man was not with them.”

The room froze.

Lazero narrowed his eyes.

“Then who was he with?”

Callie did not answer immediately.

She looked toward the entrance.

“The person who sent them.”

Before anyone could react, the restaurant doors opened.

A tall man stepped inside.

Older.

Gray hair.

Perfect black suit.

A scar running across his left hand.

The moment Lazero saw him, his expression changed.

Because there were very few people alive who could make Lazero Stone lose control of his emotions.

And this man was one of them.

“Impossible,” one of the older guests whispered.

The stranger smiled.

“Everyone always says that when they see me.”

Lazero stood slowly.

The entire room became tense.

Callie watched him carefully.

She had seen Lazero face enemies.

She had seen him threaten men twice his size.

She had seen him walk into dangerous situations without fear.

But she had never seen him look shocked.

“Adrian Vale,” Lazero said.

The man smiled.

“So you remember.”

Nobody at the table understood.

But Callie did.

Not because she knew Adrian.

Because she knew the file.

The file she had hidden for years.

The file that contained every secret connected to Lazero Stone’s rise.

Adrian Vale had disappeared ten years earlier.

Everyone believed he was dead.

But Callie knew better.

She had spent years searching for one person.

The person responsible for destroying her family.

And now he was standing in front of her.

Alive.

Lazero looked at Callie.

“You knew he was coming.”

Callie stayed silent.

That silence answered him.

For the first time, Lazero looked betrayed.

Not angry.

Not furious.

Betrayed.

“You lied to me.”

Callie lowered her eyes.

“I protected myself.”

The words were quiet.

But they carried weight.

The men around them watched.

Because suddenly, the secretary was no longer a secretary.

She was someone with secrets.

Someone who had been playing a different game.

Adrian walked closer.

“Lazero, you still don't understand.”

Lazero looked at him.

“Understand what?”

Adrian smiled.

“That the woman sitting beside you has been watching you from the beginning.”

Everyone looked at Callie.

Her expression remained calm.

But Lazero’s eyes changed.

“What does he mean?”

Callie did not answer.

Because the truth was complicated.

She had entered Lazero’s organization three years earlier for one reason.

Not money.

Not power.

Not protection.

She had a mission.

A mission that required her to get close to the most powerful man in the city.

But somewhere along the way, things changed.

Lazero had become different from the man she expected.

He protected his people.

He kept his promises.

He treated loyalty as something valuable.

And that made everything harder.

Because she had started caring about the man she was supposed to investigate.

Adrian walked around the table.

“You want to know who Callie really is?”

Lazero stared at him.

“Yes.”

Callie finally spoke.

“Don't.”

Everyone looked at her.

Her voice was calm.

But there was something different.

A warning.

Adrian smiled.

“You still think you can control this.”

Callie looked at him.

“You should have stayed hidden.”

The room became colder.

Because Adrian stopped smiling.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

Lazero noticed.

And so did everyone else.

The woman they had ignored for three years had just scared the man who walked into the room believing he owned the situation.

Lazero slowly turned toward Callie.

“Who are you?”

Callie looked at him.

And for a moment, she almost told him everything.

Her real name.

Her past.

The reason she entered his organization.

The reason she never left.

But before she could speak, Adrian placed a small envelope on the table.

It slid toward Lazero.

“Open it.”

Lazero did not touch it.

“What is this?”

Adrian looked at Callie.

“It is proof.”

The room waited.

Lazero opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

An old photograph.

A younger woman.

A younger Callie.

Standing beside someone everyone believed had been dead for years.

Lazero stared at the picture.

His face slowly changed.

Because he recognized the person standing beside her.

A person connected to his own past.

A person he thought he had buried forever.

Callie saw the photograph.

And for the first time that night, her confidence disappeared.

Because Adrian had found the one thing she thought was impossible to find.

A secret she had protected longer than anyone knew.

Lazero looked at her.

“Callie…”

She did not answer.

His voice became quieter.

“Why are you standing next to my father?”

May you like

The room fell completely silent.

And then Callie’s phone began ringing. She looked at the screen, and the name appearing on it was impossible.
