Chapter 3 - The Secret Behind My Rescue

The file with my name on it sat on Dominic Falcone’s desk.
I stood in the doorway, unable to move.
Because I finally understood one thing.
He had not found me by accident.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Dominic looked at me.
Vincent looked at me.
And I looked at the folder sitting between them.
My name was written across the front.
CLARA MONTGOMERY.
The letters seemed heavier than they should have been.
Like they carried something dangerous.
Something I was never supposed to see.
"What is that?"
My voice was quiet.
But everyone in the room heard it.
Dominic slowly closed the folder.
"Clara."
"No."
I stepped inside.
"You don't get to say my name like nothing happened."
His expression remained controlled.
That was what scared me.
A guilty man would panic.
An innocent man would explain.
Dominic Falcone did neither.
He simply watched me.
"I heard you."
His eyes narrowed slightly.
"Heard what?"
I looked at the folder.
"You said I was never supposed to survive that night."
Silence.
Vincent looked away.
That was enough.
I felt my stomach twist.
"Was I supposed to die?"
Dominic stood.
"No."
The answer came immediately.
Too quickly.
"Then explain."
He walked around the desk.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Like approaching someone who had already been hurt too many times.
"Clara, the night I found you was not random."
My heart sank.
"What does that mean?"
He stopped a few feet away.
"It means someone wanted you outside."
I stared at him.
"Nathaniel?"
Dominic didn't answer.
And that silence was an answer.
I laughed softly.
Not because it was funny.
Because I didn't know what else to do.
"My husband tried to kill me?"
"No."
Dominic's voice became colder.
"He tried to remove a problem."
The words cut deeper.
Because that was exactly what Nathaniel had said without saying it.
I was no longer his wife.
I was no longer the mother of his child.
I was a problem.
"But why?"
Dominic looked at the folder.
"Because your father left something behind."
My father.
Again.
A name I had not heard connected to danger until now.
"My father died six years ago."
"I know."
"Then what could he possibly have left?"
Dominic didn't answer.
I stepped closer.
"Tell me."
Still nothing.
"Tell me!"
My voice cracked.
My son was sleeping in the next room.
I lowered my voice.
"I lost everything."
I touched my chest.
"My family."
"My marriage."
"My entire life."
I looked at him.
"And now I find out my husband destroyed me because of something my dead father did?"
Dominic's expression changed.
Not much.
But enough.
Regret.
"I was trying to protect you."
I stared at him.
"By lying to me?"
"No."
He shook his head.
"By keeping you alive."
The room went quiet.
I hated that part of me believed him.
Because Dominic had saved me.
Not with words.
With actions.
When everyone else walked away...
He came toward me.
But that did not erase the secrets.
"What was my father involved in?"
Dominic looked toward the window.
The city lights reflected against the glass.
"Your father was not the man you thought he was."
I felt anger rise.
"Don't talk about him like that."
"You loved him."
"Yes."
"That's why I am choosing my words carefully."
He turned back.
"Your father built a company."
"I know."
"That company was not only successful because of business."
I froze.
"What are you saying?"
Dominic's voice lowered.
"Your father had enemies."
Every person in the world had enemies.
But Dominic didn't speak like that.
He spoke like my father had left behind a war.
"How do you know?"
A long pause.
Then:
"Because I was one of them."
The room stopped.
I stared.
"You?"
Dominic nodded once.
"My father and yours worked together."
I remembered the photograph.
My father.
Dominic.
Standing together.
"You knew my father?"
"Yes."
"How?"
Dominic looked at me.
"Because he saved my life."
I didn't expect that answer.
A man like Dominic Falcone.
A man everyone feared.
Saved by my father?
"He was not the monster people believed he was."
His voice softened.
"He helped people who couldn't fight back."
I looked down.
Thinking about the man I remembered.
My father had always been kind.
Always protected employees.
Always gave second chances.
But after his death, people changed.
His company disappeared.
His friends vanished.
And my inheritance was controlled by Nathaniel.
"Wait."
I looked up.
"My family trust."
Dominic's eyes changed.
"What about it?"
"Nathaniel said he liquidated it."
A dangerous silence followed.
"He couldn't."
I frowned.
"What?"
"Your family trust had restrictions."
I stared at him.
"What restrictions?"
Dominic looked at Vincent.
Vincent immediately understood.
He opened another file.
"This."
He placed several documents on the desk.
I walked closer.
My hands shook as I read.
Legal agreements.
Bank records.
Transfer history.
Then I saw something.
A signature.
Nathaniel Harrington.
My breathing stopped.
"He accessed my money."
Dominic nodded.
"But he wasn't supposed to."
My eyes moved across the page.
"He forged something."
"Yes."
I looked at Dominic.
"So this wasn't about my father."
His expression hardened.
"Not completely."
"Then what was it about?"
Dominic was silent.
That silence terrified me more than any answer.
Because it meant the truth was worse.
Before he could speak, a sound came from the hallway.
A small cry.
My son's cry.
Everything disappeared.
I ran.
The room behind me didn't matter.
The secrets didn't matter.
Only him.
My baby was awake.
I picked him up immediately.
"I'm here."
I whispered.
"I'm here."
Dominic stood in the doorway.
Watching.
There was something strange in his expression.
Pain.
I had seen it before.
The same look people had when remembering something they lost.
"You have a daughter?"
I asked suddenly.
His face changed.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
"No."
The answer was too fast.
I looked at him.
"Dominic."
He looked away.
"I had someone."
That was all he said.
Someone.
Not a name.
Not a story.
Just someone.
I wanted to ask.
But I stopped.
Because everyone had secrets.
And I was beginning to understand that Dominic Falcone's secrets were dangerous.
That night, I couldn't sleep.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Nathaniel.
The study.
The snow.
The gates.
Then I saw Dominic.
The stranger who carried me away from death.
The man who knew my father.
The man who had a file about me before he even saved me.
Around three in the morning, I heard voices.
I left my room quietly.
Dominic and Vincent were downstairs.
I stopped behind the wall.
"I found the connection."
Vincent sounded serious.
"What connection?"
Dominic asked.
"Between Nathaniel and the person who ordered the attack."
My heart stopped.
Attack?
I moved closer.
Vincent continued.
"The payment trail leads through three companies."
"Names."
A pause.
Then Vincent said:
"The first one belongs to Victoria Kensington."
My hand covered my mouth.
But Vincent wasn't finished.
"The second belongs to Jackson Miller."
Nathaniel's security chief.
The man who dragged me outside.
I felt sick.
Then Dominic spoke.
"And the third?"
Silence.
Longer this time.
When Vincent finally answered, his voice was lower.
"That's the problem."
"What?"
"The third company is registered under a name we never expected."
I leaned closer.
My heart was pounding.
Dominic stepped forward.
"Whose name?"
Vincent looked at the document in his hand.
Then he said:
"The owner is..."
The lights suddenly went out.
The entire house became dark.
A second later, an alarm started screaming.
Dominic moved instantly.
"Clara!"
I froze.
Because from the darkness behind me...
May you like
Someone whispered my name.
And when I turned around, the front door was already open.
