Chapter 2 - The Man Who Refused To Let Me Die

The first thing I heard was a heartbeat.
Not mine.
A machine.
A steady rhythm cutting through the darkness.
Beep.
Beep.
Beep.
For a few seconds, I thought I was dead.
Because the last thing I remembered was the snow.
The cold.
The pain.
The feeling that my body was giving up.
Then I remembered my son.
My eyes opened.
A white ceiling appeared above me.
Not the marble ceiling of Nathaniel’s penthouse.
Not the dark sky above the street.
A hospital ceiling.
But something felt different.
The room was too quiet.
Too controlled.
The walls were darker than any hospital I had ever seen.
There were no flowers.
No visitors.
No nurses walking around.
Only expensive furniture.
A leather chair.
A wooden table.
And a man standing near the window.
Dominic Falcone.
I recognized him immediately.
Not because I had met him before.
Because everyone in New York knew his name.
People never said Dominic Falcone loudly.
They whispered it.
Businessmen feared him.
Politicians avoided him.
Criminals respected him.
A man who controlled the ports.
A man whose enemies disappeared.
A man who lived in a world completely opposite from mine.
Yet he was standing in my room.
Watching over me.
I tried to sit up.
Pain immediately rushed through my body.
"Don't move."
His voice stopped me.
Deep.
Calm.
Commanding.
He turned away from the window.
For a moment, I saw the man everyone feared.
Cold eyes.
A dangerous presence.
Then his expression changed when he looked at me.
Concern.
Real concern.
"You almost died."
I swallowed.
"My baby..."
His eyes moved toward the small crib beside the bed.
My heart stopped.
I looked.
A tiny bundle was sleeping peacefully.
My son.
Alive.
A broken sound escaped my mouth.
I started crying.
Not the tears I cried when Nathaniel betrayed me.
Not the tears from fear.
These were different.
These were tears because my child was breathing.
Dominic stepped closer.
"The doctors said another few minutes outside and you both would have been gone."
I looked at him.
"Why?"
The question came out before I could stop it.
Why would a stranger save me?
Why would a man like him risk everything for someone like me?
Dominic looked away.
"I don't know."
That answer surprised me.
He seemed like a man who always knew exactly what he wanted.
"You don't know?"
"No."
He placed his hands into his coat pockets.
"I saw someone dying."
His eyes returned to mine.
"I stopped."
Simple.
Almost impossible.
After everything Nathaniel had done, the kindness of a stranger felt unreal.
I looked down at my hands.
My wedding ring was still there.
The only thing Nathaniel had not taken.
I touched it.
And suddenly I remembered everything.
The study.
Victoria.
The accusation.
The gates.
My breathing became unstable.
Dominic noticed.
"Who did this to you?"
I didn't answer.
Because saying Nathaniel's name made it real.
The man I loved.
The father of my child.
The person who promised to protect me.
"He was my husband."
Dominic's face changed slightly.
"Was?"
I nodded.
"He left me outside."
Silence filled the room.
"He knew I was in labor."
Dominic stared at me.
"He knew?"
I closed my eyes.
"He looked at me."
My voice broke.
"He looked at me while I begged him to help his own child."
Dominic's jaw tightened.
For the first time, I saw anger.
Not loud anger.
Not uncontrolled anger.
Something much more dangerous.
The kind of anger that stayed quiet.
"Who is he?"
I hesitated.
"Why?"
"Because I asked."
The answer was cold.
I looked at him.
"I don't want revenge."
Dominic said nothing.
"I just want my son safe."
Something in his expression softened.
Maybe because he understood that.
Maybe because he had lost someone too.
The door opened.
A doctor entered.
Older.
Calm.
"Dominic."
The doctor looked at me.
"I'm Dr. Weiss."
The name sounded familiar.
"The baby is healthy."
I let out a breath.
"Thank you."
The doctor smiled.
"But Clara, there is something you should know."
My heart tightened.
"What?"
He glanced at Dominic.
Then back at me.
"The person who brought you here paid for everything."
I looked at Dominic.
"I didn't ask him to."
"No," Dr. Weiss said.
"He insisted."
Dominic looked away.
Almost uncomfortable.
A man who could order people around without hesitation seemed uncomfortable receiving gratitude.
The doctor left.
The room became quiet again.
"You don't have to do this."
Dominic looked at me.
"Do what?"
"Save me."
A long pause.
Then he said:
"Too late."
I didn't understand.
"What?"
He looked at my son.
"He is alive because I stopped."
His voice lowered.
"I don't abandon people."
The words stayed with me.
Because they were everything Nathaniel was not.
For the next few days, Dominic arranged everything.
A private room.
Security.
Food.
Clothes.
Everything I needed.
But he never crossed a line.
He never demanded anything.
He never asked me for gratitude.
That confused me more than anything.
Men like Nathaniel always wanted something.
Power.
Money.
Control.
But Dominic wanted nothing.
At least, that was what I believed.
Until the fourth morning.
I woke up and found a newspaper on the table.
The headline was impossible.
HARRINGTON GLOBAL ANNOUNCES DIVORCE FROM CLARA MONTGOMERY.
My hands shook.
I grabbed the paper.
The article claimed I had suffered an emotional breakdown.
It claimed I abandoned my husband.
It claimed Nathaniel had been forced to protect his reputation.
Protect his reputation?
After he left me to die?
I read further.
A statement from Nathaniel.
"Clara's actions have caused significant damage to my family and company."
My vision blurred.
He was rewriting everything.
He was turning himself into the victim.
I threw the newspaper onto the table.
Dominic entered the room.
He saw my face.
"What happened?"
I pushed the newspaper toward him.
He read it.
His expression became unreadable.
Then he folded it carefully.
"Do you want this fixed?"
I looked at him.
"No."
He raised an eyebrow.
"No?"
"I don't want him to say he owns my life anymore."
Dominic watched me.
"I want my son."
A small silence followed.
Then he nodded.
"Good."
I looked confused.
"Good?"
"Because fighting for your child is different from fighting for revenge."
For the first time in days, I felt like I could breathe.
But peace did not last.
That afternoon, a woman arrived.
She wore a black coat.
Perfect makeup.
A confident smile.
At first, I thought she was a lawyer.
Then she introduced herself.
"Victoria Kensington."
My blood froze.
She looked at my son.
Then at me.
"I wanted to see how the abandoned wife was doing."
I stood slowly.
"What are you doing here?"
Victoria smiled.
"Checking on an old friend."
"You are not my friend."
Her smile disappeared for a second.
Then returned.
"You still don't understand, Clara."
She stepped closer.
"Nathaniel didn't leave you because he stopped loving you."
I stared at her.
"Then why?"
Victoria leaned forward.
"Because he was afraid."
The room became silent.
"Afraid of what?"
She looked toward the door.
At Dominic's security outside.
Then back at me.
"Afraid you would discover what your father left behind."
I froze.
"My father?"
Victoria smiled.
A cruel smile.
"You really don't know."
My heartbeat changed.
"What are you talking about?"
She reached into her purse.
Slowly.
And placed something on the table.
A photograph.
Old.
Faded.
A picture of my father.
And beside him...
Dominic Falcone.
I stared at it.
Because I knew my father.
I knew his business partners.
I knew his friends.
But I had never seen this man in my entire life.
Victoria whispered:
"Your husband didn't destroy you because he wanted your money."
She stepped backward.
"He destroyed you because Nathaniel found out what your father and Dominic Falcone were hiding."
My fingers tightened around the photograph.
"Where did you get this?"
Victoria didn't answer.
Instead, she walked toward the door.
Before leaving, she turned around.
"You should ask Dominic why he really saved you."
The door closed.
I stood there frozen.
Because for the first time...
I wondered if the man who rescued me from death had already known exactly who I was.
That night, after my son finally fell asleep, I walked toward Dominic's private office.
The door was slightly open.
I heard voices inside.
One belonged to Dominic.
The other belonged to Vincent.
"...she cannot know yet."
I stopped.
My hand froze on the door.
Vincent lowered his voice.
"But eventually she will discover the truth."
A pause.
Then Dominic said the words that made my entire body go cold.
"Clara Montgomery was never supposed to survive that night."
I pushed the door open.
May you like
Dominic turned around.
And on his desk was a file with my name on it.
