Chapter 3 - The Photograph That Exposed My Father

The photograph fell from Dominic’s hand before he could hide it.
I picked it up from the floor.
And the moment I saw it, I forgot how to breathe.
It was me.
Seven years younger.
Standing outside the hospital where I had completed my first clinical rotation.
But that wasn’t what terrified me.
It was the person standing in the background.
My father.
Watching me.
Watching Dominic.
I looked at Dominic.
"What is this?"
He didn’t answer immediately.
That scared me more than anything.
Because Dominic Rossi always had an answer.
A threat.
A plan.
A solution.
But now he looked like a man who had just seen a ghost.
"Clara," he said quietly.
"Tell me."
My voice was sharper than I expected.
"Why does my father have a picture of me from the night I saved you?"
Dominic walked toward the desk and closed the office door.
Not because he wanted privacy.
Because he wanted protection.
That small action told me everything.
There was something in this room that could destroy my entire understanding of my own life.
"I need you to listen carefully," he said.
I held the photograph tighter.
"I’m listening."
"Seven years ago, the night you found me, I wasn’t running from my family."
I frowned.
"But you said—"
"I said I wanted to escape my family."
He paused.
"There’s a difference."
I waited.
Dominic looked at the photograph.
"The night I was attacked, I discovered someone inside my organization was working with my enemies."
"Someone close to you?"
"Someone I trusted."
His voice became colder.
"I found documents. Names. Transactions. Evidence."
"And your family wanted it?"
"Yes."
I looked back at the picture.
"My father knew?"
Dominic didn’t answer.
But his silence was enough.
I felt something break inside me.
My father had always been the person I trusted most.
The person who taught me to be kind.
The person who told me that helping others was the most important thing a human could do.
Now I was standing in a mafia boss’s office, holding proof that he had been connected to the darkest moment of my husband’s life.
"No," I whispered.
Dominic watched me carefully.
"You don’t have to believe it yet."
"I know my father."
His eyes softened slightly.
"And I knew mine."
That sentence stopped me.
Because Dominic wasn’t defending himself.
He was warning me.
I placed the photograph on the desk.
"Why did he take this picture?"
Dominic walked closer.
"Because he was looking for you."
"Why?"
"Because you were never supposed to find me."
The room became silent.
I stared at him.
"What does that mean?"
Dominic sat down slowly.
"The person who attacked me that night knew where I was going."
"And?"
"And they knew someone might find me."
I felt cold.
"Someone?"
Dominic looked at me.
"You."
I shook my head.
"No."
"Clara—"
"No."
My voice cracked.
"You’re telling me someone planned for me to find you?"
"I’m telling you someone knew exactly what would happen."
I remembered that night.
The empty street.
The alley.
The stranger bleeding against the wall.
At the time, I thought it was a coincidence.
A terrible accident.
But now Dominic was telling me my entire life had crossed with his for a reason.
I hated that possibility.
Because it meant my kindness wasn’t just kindness.
It meant someone had used it.
"I never knew who you were," I whispered.
"I know."
"I didn’t know anything about your world."
"I know."
"Then why?"
Dominic looked away.
"Because your father knew."
Those words hit harder than I expected.
I stepped back.
"My father knew you?"
"Not personally."
"Then how?"
Dominic hesitated.
"Your father worked with people connected to mine."
I felt anger rising.
"Are you saying my father is part of this?"
"I’m saying I don’t know the whole truth."
For the first time, Dominic admitted uncertainty.
That frightened me.
Because a man like Dominic Rossi didn’t admit he didn’t know.
He was always three steps ahead.
Unless someone had been hiding something from him too.
I turned toward the window.
The city lights blurred through the glass.
"My entire marriage was a punishment."
Dominic looked at me.
"Clara—"
"You forced me into this."
His expression changed.
Guilt.
Real guilt.
"I know."
"And now you’re telling me my father may have been connected to the reason you needed me?"
He lowered his eyes.
"I never knew."
That answer was honest.
And somehow that made everything worse.
I wanted to hate him.
It would have been easier.
But the man standing in front of me was not the monster I imagined.
He was someone who had lost trust before.
Someone who had been betrayed.
Someone who still remembered the hands of a frightened nursing student who refused to leave him behind.
"Why didn’t you tell me when you realized it was me?"
Dominic looked at me.
"Because I was afraid."
The words shocked me.
"Afraid of what?"
"That if I told you the truth, I would lose you."
I didn’t know what to say.
Because Dominic Rossi was many things.
Dangerous.
Powerful.
Impossible to understand.
But afraid?
That was something I never expected.
Before I could answer, there was a knock on the door.
Arthur entered.
His face was serious.
"Boss."
Dominic immediately changed.
The emotion disappeared.
The mafia leader returned.
"What happened?"
Arthur looked at me.
Then at Dominic.
"We found the person who leaked your location."
My heart started beating faster.
"Who?"
Arthur hesitated.
Dominic noticed.
"Say it."
Arthur took a breath.
"It was someone from Clara’s family."
The room went silent.
I stared at Arthur.
"Who?"
Arthur looked down.
Then said:
"Your brother."
I felt like the air disappeared.
"My brother?"
Dominic stood.
"Are you sure?"
Arthur nodded.
"We traced the message. It came from an account connected to him."
I shook my head.
"No."
Nobody moved.
"My brother would never do that."
Dominic watched me.
Not with suspicion.
With sadness.
And somehow that hurt more.
"Clara."
I looked at him.
"Your family has been hiding things from you."
I wanted to argue.
I wanted to say he was wrong.
But deep down, something had already started changing.
Because there was one thing I couldn’t ignore.
My brother knew about the debt.
My brother pushed me into this marriage.
My brother never explained how he lost fifteen million dollars.
And now he was connected to the attack on Dominic.
A phone vibrated.
Arthur checked his device.
Then his expression changed completely.
"Boss."
Dominic looked at him.
"What now?"
Arthur slowly turned the screen around.
It was a message.
A photo.
And a sentence underneath.
Dominic’s face became pale.
I stepped closer.
"What does it say?"
He didn’t answer.
Because the message wasn’t for him.
It was for me.
The sender was my father.
And the words were:
"Clara, if Dominic told you about the alley, then he already knows the truth about your mother."
Then another notification appeared.
A new location.
A place I recognized.
My childhood home.
And beneath it was one final message:
May you like
"Come alone before your husband finds what I buried."
The front door of my father’s house was already open. Someone inside whispered my name...
