Chapter 5 - The Daughter of the Man He Hated

The door behind Arthur's desk opened slowly.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody moved.
Paige stared into the dark space beyond the doorway.
A place that had been locked since the day she started working at Gallagher Freight & Harbor.
A place nobody entered.
Not even Leo.
Arthur stepped forward.
His entire body changed.
The man who had faced armed enemies without hesitation suddenly looked like someone standing in front of a memory he was not ready to see.
"Stay behind me."
Paige looked at him.
"Why?"
Arthur did not look back.
"Because whoever opened that door knows exactly what they're doing."
Leo reached for his weapon.
Arthur immediately stopped him.
"No."
Leo frowned.
"No?"
Arthur's eyes remained fixed on the darkness.
"If they wanted us dead, they wouldn't have opened the door."
A cold silence followed.
Paige noticed something.
Arthur was not protecting himself.
He was protecting her.
The realization felt strange.
Because this was the same man everyone believed had no weakness.
Yet every decision he made tonight seemed connected to keeping her safe.
Arthur entered the private archive first.
The room behind the hidden door was smaller than Paige expected.
No luxury.
No expensive furniture.
Only shelves.
Hundreds of files.
Old documents.
Photographs.
Records.
A private history Arthur had hidden from the world.
The lights turned on automatically.
And on the center table sat one object.
A small wooden box.
Arthur stopped.
Leo looked at him.
"What is that?"
Arthur didn't answer.
Because he already knew.
He had seen that box before.
Five years ago.
The night Patrick died.
"Arthur?"
He walked toward it slowly.
For a man who feared touch more than anything, the hardest thing was not touching people.
It was touching memories.
He opened the box.
Inside was a letter.
An old photograph.
And a small silver necklace.
Paige recognized the necklace immediately.
She had seen it before.
Around her mother's neck.
Her entire life.
Her breath stopped.
"That's my mother's."
Arthur looked at her.
"You've seen this?"
Paige nodded.
"She never took it off."
Leo looked between them.
"How does Margaret Bennett have something from Patrick Doyle?"
Nobody answered.
Because nobody knew.
Arthur picked up the letter.
The handwriting was Patrick's.
Again.
His fingers tightened.
He unfolded it.
The first line made his expression change.
Arthur, if you found this, then I failed to protect them.
Paige watched him read.
Then Arthur continued silently.
A few seconds later, he handed the letter to Leo.
Leo read.
His face slowly changed.
"What?"
Paige looked at him.
"What does it say?"
Leo hesitated.
Arthur answered.
"It says Patrick had two daughters."
The room became silent.
Paige felt her stomach drop.
"Two?"
Arthur nodded.
"Emily."
He looked at Paige.
"And you."
The words felt unreal.
Paige shook her head.
"No."
Arthur watched her carefully.
"Paige."
"No."
She stepped backward.
"My mother would have told me."
"Maybe she couldn't."
Paige looked at him.
"Don't do that."
"Do what?"
"Make excuses for people who lied to me."
Arthur went quiet.
Because she was right.
Her whole life had been built around missing pieces.
People protecting her.
People hiding things from her.
And somehow, the truth had always been near.
But never available.
Leo continued reading.
"There is more."
Arthur looked at him.
Leo lowered the letter.
"Patrick wrote that Emily was in danger."
Paige looked at the letter.
"From who?"
Leo continued.
"He didn't say."
Arthur's eyes narrowed.
Leo looked down.
Then stopped.
"What?"
Arthur noticed.
"Leo."
Leo swallowed.
"He mentioned you."
Arthur took the letter.
He read the final paragraph.
Paige watched his expression.
The anger.
The confusion.
The pain.
All of it appeared at once.
"What did he say?"
Arthur didn't answer immediately.
Then:
"He said I would hate him."
Paige frowned.
"Why?"
Arthur looked at her.
"Because he knew I would blame him."
"For what?"
Arthur looked back at the letter.
"He said I would believe he betrayed me."
A long silence followed.
Then Paige whispered:
"But he didn't?"
Arthur looked at her.
"I don't know."
That answer surprised her.
Because Arthur Gallagher was not a man who admitted uncertainty.
But Patrick Doyle was the one person who could break through every wall he built.
Suddenly, Leo's phone buzzed.
He checked it.
Then immediately looked at Arthur.
"What?"
Leo turned the screen around.
A security alert.
Someone had entered the building.
Not through the front entrance.
Not through the parking garage.
Through Arthur's private elevator.
Arthur's expression became cold.
"Who?"
Leo checked.
Then froze.
"Arthur..."
"Who?"
Leo looked at Paige.
"Emily Doyle."
The room went silent.
Arthur closed the letter.
"Where is she?"
"Heading here."
Paige looked toward the archive door.
"She wants us to find this."
Arthur looked at her.
"What?"
Paige pointed at the letter.
"The hidden room. The box. The photograph."
She looked at him.
"This wasn't a break-in."
Leo frowned.
"Then what was it?"
Paige answered quietly.
"An invitation."
Arthur stared at her.
The same thought had crossed his mind.
And he hated it.
Because if Emily wanted to reveal the truth, she could have done it at any time.
Instead, she waited.
She placed clues.
She guided them.
Like she was leading Arthur toward something.
The elevator sound echoed through the building.
Someone was coming.
Arthur moved toward the exit.
Then stopped.
He looked at Paige.
"Stay here."
Paige immediately shook her head.
"No."
Arthur's eyes narrowed.
"Paige."
"You spent five years looking for answers."
She looked at the archive.
"I spent my entire life missing them."
A pause.
Then she stepped beside him.
"I want the truth too."
For a moment, Arthur said nothing.
Then he nodded.
Not approval.
Acceptance.
The elevator doors opened.
A woman stepped out.
Dark hair.
Black coat.
Calm expression.
Emily Doyle.
Patrick's daughter.
Arthur stared at her.
The woman who had secretly worked inside his company.
The woman connected to every unanswered question.
Emily looked at Arthur.
Then at Paige.
Her expression changed.
Not surprise.
Sadness.
"I was wondering when you would finally find the room."
Arthur's voice was cold.
"Who are you really?"
Emily looked at him.
Then slowly reached into her coat.
Leo immediately moved.
But Emily pulled out only a photograph.
She placed it on the table.
A photograph Arthur had never seen.
Arthur looked down.
And his face changed.
Because the picture showed Patrick Doyle.
Margaret Bennett.
Emily.
And a newborn baby.
But written on the back were four words.
May you like
Words that made Arthur take a step back.
"Arthur, she is yours."
