Chapter 1 - The Three-Foot Rule

A woman grabbed a broken tie from the floor and whispered: "Arthur... someone tried to kill you." When mafia boss Arthur Gallagher arrived, he discovered a blood-stained cufflink hidden inside his damaged jacket. But three tiny numbers were carved into the metal: "3 - 0 - 5" Arthur suddenly realized this wasn't a simple attack.

The entire executive floor went silent when Arthur Gallagher walked through the glass doors.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The men who controlled entire shipping routes and negotiated million-dollar deals suddenly looked like frightened employees waiting for their boss to decide their fate.

Arthur did not need to raise his voice.

He never did.

The fear came before him.

Rainwater dripped from the shoulders of his charcoal suit. His white shirt was partially visible beneath his jacket, stained near the cuff where someone had tried to send him a message. His dark silk tie hung unevenly around his neck, the knot twisted and broken as if someone had grabbed it during the struggle.

But the blood was not what made everyone nervous.

It was his hands.

Arthur Gallagher's hands were shaking.

Only for a second.

Most people would never notice.

But Leo Mercer noticed.

Leo noticed everything.

He had been beside Arthur for twelve years, long before Gallagher Freight & Harbor became one of the most powerful companies in Chicago.

"Everyone out," Leo ordered.

Nobody argued.

The managers disappeared immediately.

The security team followed.

Within seconds, the massive conference room was almost empty.

Almost.

Because Paige Bennett was still sitting at her desk outside the glass office, typing on her laptop like nothing unusual had happened.

Leo looked at her.

"Paige."

She stopped typing.

"Yes?"

"You should leave."

She glanced toward Arthur's office.

"Is that an order?"

Leo hesitated.

That was rare.

Almost nobody made Leo Mercer hesitate.

"That's advice."

Paige looked through the glass wall.

Arthur stood with his back toward them, staring at the Chicago skyline.

Even from a distance, she could see the tension in his shoulders.

She slowly closed her laptop.

Then she picked up her tablet.

"I have his afternoon schedule."

Leo frowned.

"Paige."

"What?"

"You've been here three months."

"I know."

"You still don't understand him."

Paige looked at him calmly.

"I understand that he has a meeting at two, a contract review at four, and that someone spilled coffee on the printer because nobody knows how to replace a toner cartridge."

Leo stared at her.

She continued walking.

"That seems more urgent."

Leo almost smiled.

Almost.

Then he remembered who he worked for.

"Paige."

She stopped.

"Nobody touches Arthur Gallagher."

Her expression did not change.

"I know."

"No. You don't."

Leo lowered his voice.

"People have lost jobs for standing too close to him. Men twice your size have been removed from this building because they forgot one simple rule."

Paige looked at him.

"What rule?"

Leo answered quietly.

"The three-foot rule."

She looked confused.

"The what?"

"Nobody gets within three feet of Arthur unless he allows it."

Paige glanced back at the office.

"That's a little dramatic."

Leo's expression became serious.

"It's not."

The truth was, Arthur Gallagher had not always been this way.

Years ago, before people feared his name, he had trusted someone.

Patrick Doyle.

The man who raised him after his father died.

The man who taught him how to survive.

Patrick taught Arthur that a smile could hide a knife.

A handshake could hide betrayal.

And a person standing close enough to touch you could destroy everything.

Arthur was nineteen when Patrick betrayed him.

The memory never left.

A private dinner.

A quiet conversation.

A familiar hand on his shoulder.

Then pain.

A knife.

Blood.

The worst part was not the wound.

It was realizing the person holding the blade was the same man Arthur would have died protecting.

Arthur survived.

Patrick did not.

After that night, Arthur built walls around himself.

Not metaphorical walls.

Real ones.

Security.

Distance.

Rules.

The three-foot boundary became his law.

Nobody questioned it.

Nobody tested it.

Until Paige Bennett.

She was not supposed to matter.

That was what bothered Arthur the most.

She was supposed to be another employee.

Another person who followed instructions.

Another person who avoided eye contact and kept conversations short.

But Paige did not act like everyone else.

She did not fear his reputation.

She did not try to impress him.

She did not flirt with him.

She did not ask questions about the parts of his business that were better left untouched.

She simply worked.

And somehow, that made Arthur notice her more.

Three months earlier, when Paige first entered Gallagher Freight & Harbor, she had no idea what kind of man she was working for.

She only knew the salary was enough to keep her mother's care facility paid.

That was the reason she accepted the job.

Not power.

Not luxury.

Not the mysterious reputation surrounding Arthur Gallagher.

Her mother, Margaret Bennett, had spent the last year slowly losing memories.

Some days she remembered Paige.

Some days she did not.

Every month, the medical bills increased.

So Paige worked.

She ignored rumors.

She ignored whispers.

And she learned that Arthur Gallagher was not as simple as people claimed.

Dangerous?

Yes.

Cold?

Definitely.

But cruel?

She was not sure.

The first time she saw him lose control was during her second week.

A warehouse manager named Jimmy had made a mistake.

A very expensive mistake.

Arthur had entered the room furious.

Jimmy, nervous and careless, reached out and grabbed Arthur's arm while trying to explain.

The entire room froze.

Arthur reacted instantly.

He pushed Jimmy backward against the table.

Not because Jimmy had made a mistake.

Because Jimmy touched him.

Paige watched the scene.

Everyone expected her to run.

Instead, she walked over and placed Arthur's coffee on the table.

"Your three o'clock call has been moved."

Arthur turned toward her.

Nobody interrupted Arthur Gallagher.

Nobody.

But Paige continued.

"Because the person you're supposed to meet is currently apologizing to security for trying to enter through the wrong door."

Silence.

Arthur stared at her.

Then he released Jimmy.

That was the first moment everyone realized something strange.

Arthur listened to her.

And Paige never understood why.

Back in the office, Arthur finally turned away from the window.

His eyes moved toward Paige.

"You should be gone."

Paige stepped inside the doorway.

Not too close.

She knew the rule.

"I have your updated schedule."

"I didn't ask."

"I know."

Arthur looked at her.

Most people lowered their eyes.

Paige didn't.

"You were attacked at the docks."

Arthur's expression changed slightly.

"Who told you?"

"Your jacket did."

For a moment, Arthur said nothing.

Paige noticed the broken tie.

"The meeting downstairs starts in forty minutes."

"Cancel it."

"Why?"

Arthur looked at her.

"Because someone thought they could send me a message."

Paige looked at his injured cuff.

"And did they?"

Arthur walked toward his desk.

"They failed."

She nodded.

Then she noticed something.

His hands were still shaking.

Only slightly.

But they were.

Without thinking, she stepped closer.

Arthur immediately looked up.

The room changed.

Even Leo reacted.

"Paige."

She stopped.

The warning in his voice was clear.

But Paige was looking at Arthur.

Not the mafia boss.

Not the man everyone feared.

The man who was standing there unable to fix something as simple as his tie.

"You can't breathe properly when you're angry."

Arthur's eyes narrowed.

"What?"

"Your tie is too tight."

Nobody had ever spoken to him like that.

Paige reached toward the knot.

Then stopped.

For one second, she remembered Leo's warning.

Nobody touched Arthur Gallagher.

Nobody.

But Arthur did not move.

He simply watched her.

And somehow, that was permission.

Her fingers touched the silk tie.

The entire room held its breath.

Leo looked away.

The security guard near the door froze.

Because everyone knew what should happen next.

Arthur Gallagher hated being touched.

But he did not step back.

Paige carefully loosened the knot.

She fixed the collar.

She adjusted the tie.

No fear.

No apology.

No explanation.

When she finished, she stepped away.

"Better."

Arthur stared at her.

He had spent years believing every touch carried a hidden intention.

Every person close enough to reach him was a possible threat.

But Paige Bennett had crossed the line everyone else feared.

And she had done nothing except help him breathe.

For the first time in years, Arthur Gallagher did not know what to do.

Then his phone rang.

Leo looked at the screen.

The color disappeared from his face.

Arthur noticed.

"Who is it?"

Leo slowly answered.

"Arthur..."

He turned the phone around.

The message on the screen was from an unknown number.

Three words.

SHE KNOWS THE TRUTH.

Arthur looked at Paige.

And then Leo whispered the name beneath the message.

May you like

The name Arthur had not heard in five years.

"Patrick Doyle's daughter is alive."
