Chapter 6 - The Woman Who Knew the First Secret

The chapel doors opened.

Damian Calloway did not move.

Neither did Adrian.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

The woman standing in the doorway looked older than the woman Damian remembered from childhood photographs.

Her hair was almost completely silver.

Her face carried years of exhaustion.

But Damian knew her immediately.

Because some faces never disappear.

Especially the faces of people you thought you lost forever.

“Mother?”

The word left his mouth before he could stop it.

Behind him, Maya covered her mouth.

Adrian closed his eyes.

Like he had been expecting this moment for years.

The woman stepped inside.

Her hands were trembling.

“Damian.”

His grip tightened around his weapon.

“What are you doing here?”

She looked at Adrian.

Then at Maya.

Then back at her son.

“I came because it was time.”

Damian laughed quietly.

A cold, humorless sound.

“Time?”

He looked around the abandoned chapel.

“My father died ten years ago.”

“Yes.”

“You disappeared from my life.”

His voice remained controlled.

But every word carried pain.

“You let me believe my entire family was gone.”

His mother looked down.

“I was trying to protect you.”

“No.”

Damian stepped closer.

“You were protecting the lie.”

The woman flinched.

And that reaction told him everything.

She knew.

She had always known.

All these years.

Every unanswered question.

Every strange silence.

Every conversation that stopped when he entered the room.

She had been carrying the truth.

“Tell me,” Damian said.

The chapel became silent.

“Tell me who I am supposed to believe.”

His mother looked at Adrian.

For the first time, Damian noticed something strange.

She wasn’t afraid of him.

She was afraid for him.

“Adrian was my first child.”

Damian froze.

The words felt unreal.

His mother continued.

“Before you were born, your father and I discovered that Adrian had been chosen to inherit everything.”

Damian frowned.

“Chosen?”

Adrian looked away.

“My father wanted a perfect successor.”

His mother nodded.

“But Adrian refused.”

“Why?”

She looked at Damian.

“Because he discovered what Richard was doing.”

The same answer.

The same missing piece.

Damian was tired of hearing half-truths.

“What was he doing?”

His mother closed her eyes.

“Your father built the empire by making deals with dangerous people.”

Damian said nothing.

He already knew that part.

Everyone knew the Calloways were not ordinary businessmen.

But she continued.

“The problem was not what he built.”

A pause.

“It was what he was willing to destroy to keep it.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“He wanted control over everything.”

His voice was quiet.

“Even his own family.”

Damian looked at him.

“Why did he fake your death?”

Adrian answered immediately.

“Because I threatened to expose him.”

The chapel fell silent.

Maya looked at Damian.

“He was going to tell the authorities.”

Damian looked at Adrian.

“You were going to destroy your own family?”

Adrian gave a sad smile.

“No.”

“I was trying to save it.”

The words stayed between them.

Damian hated that part of him understood.

Because he had spent years seeing the cracks.

The fear people had around his father.

The secrets hidden behind wealth.

The way everyone obeyed.

Not because they respected Richard.

Because they feared him.

His mother walked closer.

“Damian, there is something you need to know.”

He looked at her.

“Another secret?”

Her eyes filled with regret.

“Yes.”

She reached into her coat.

And pulled out a small box.

Old.

Black.

The same type of box his father used to store important documents.

Damian stared.

“What is that?”

“Something your father never wanted you to find.”

She opened it.

Inside was a necklace.

A small silver necklace.

With a pendant shaped like a star.

Damian recognized it.

Not because he had seen it before.

Because Maya had worn something similar.

“The necklace from the boathouse.”

His mother nodded.

“Your sister had one.”

Damian’s heart stopped.

“Had?”

His mother looked at him.

“She is alive.”

The words should have shocked him.

But somehow, after everything he had learned that night, they felt like the only truth left.

“Where is she?”

Nobody answered.

Damian looked from his mother to Adrian.

Then Maya.

“You all know.”

Silence.

That was the answer.

His expression hardened.

“You know where she is.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“She was hidden for a reason.”

“From who?”

Adrian looked toward the chapel entrance.

“From the people who are still trying to find her.”

Damian’s phone vibrated.

Everyone looked.

Another unknown number.

This time, a message.

A photo.

Damian opened it.

His face changed.

It was a picture of Lily.

Sleeping in the guest room.

Taken moments ago.

The message below was short.

"Stop digging."

Another message appeared.

"Or the little girl disappears next."

Damian’s entire body went still.

Maya immediately stepped forward.

“No.”

Adrian looked at the phone.

“They know about Lily.”

Damian’s voice became dangerously quiet.

“They were inside my house.”

Nobody answered.

Because everyone knew it was true.

The person behind this was not watching from far away.

They were close.

Very close.

Damian turned toward the chapel doors.

“I’m going back.”

His mother grabbed his arm.

“No.”

He looked at her hand.

Then at her face.

“Let go.”

“Damian, listen to me.”

“No.”

His eyes hardened.

“I spent my whole life believing my family protected me.”

A pause.

“Now I find out they were protecting secrets.”

He removed her hand.

“I’m done waiting.”

He walked outside.

The ocean wind hit his face.

But he barely noticed.

His only thought was Lily.

The child who trusted him.

The child who ran to him when everyone else failed her.

The child who might be connected to a secret bigger than she understood.

When Damian reached the mansion, the security gates were open.

That was wrong.

They were never left open.

He stepped out of the car.

His guards were missing.

No lights.

No movement.

The mansion was silent.

Too silent.

He entered through the main doors.

“Lily?”

No answer.

He moved faster.

The guest room door was open.

The bed was empty.

The stuffed rabbit was on the floor.

Damian stopped.

His chest tightened.

Then he saw something on the pillow.

A note.

Small handwriting.

Not an adult’s.

A child’s.

He picked it up.

Only four words were written.

"Mommy found the door."

Damian looked around the room.

A hidden panel behind the bookshelf was open.

A passage.

One that did not appear on any mansion blueprint.

He stepped closer.

From inside the dark tunnel came a sound.

A voice.

A woman’s voice.

Maya.

“Damian…”

He moved into the passage.

The walls were covered with old photographs.

Calloway family photographs.

But one picture stopped him.

A picture of his sister.

Older.

Alive.

Standing beside someone Damian never expected to see.

He reached for the frame.

Then his phone received one final message.

A name appeared on the screen.

May you like

A name that made him stop breathing.

Because the person who sent it was the same person he had buried ten years ago…
