Chapter 4 - The Brother Who Was Never Supposed to Exist

“Damian.”

The whisper came again.

Not from the hallway.

Not from the window.

From inside the room.

Damian turned slowly.

The lights remained off.

The only source of illumination came from the moonlight passing through the glass.

Lily was still sitting on the bed.

Holding the photograph.

Her small fingers were shaking.

Evelyn stood behind Damian, completely silent.

And for the first time in ten years, Damian Calloway felt like he was standing inside someone else’s memory.

A memory his family had tried to erase.

“Who is there?” Damian called.

No answer.

He moved toward the corner of the room.

Every instinct he had developed over years of surviving dangerous situations told him something was wrong.

The silence was too controlled.

Too deliberate.

Someone wanted him to know they were there.

But they did not want him to find them.

Damian reached for the small flashlight on the table.

The beam crossed the room.

Nothing.

The window was locked.

The balcony was empty.

The closet was open.

No one.

Then Lily spoke.

Quietly.

“He was crying.”

Damian stopped.

He looked back at her.

“Who was crying?”

“The man in the picture.”

Damian walked back.

“Lily, when did you see him?”

She looked down.

“Before Mommy disappeared.”

The words hit him.

“Tell me everything.”

Lily hugged her rabbit tighter.

“Mommy was scared.”

“Why?”

“She found something.”

“What?”

The little girl looked at the photograph.

“A baby.”

Damian stared.

“A baby?”

Lily nodded.

“Mommy said the baby was supposed to be gone.”

The room became painfully quiet.

Because Damian understood.

A baby.

A missing child.

A hidden sister.

A family secret.

Everything was connected.

But there was still one thing he could not understand.

Why Maya?

Why would a housekeeper risk everything for a secret that belonged to the Calloway family?

Unless she was never just a housekeeper.

Damian looked at Evelyn.

“You knew.”

Evelyn’s expression changed.

“About what?”

“About Maya finding the photograph.”

Evelyn did not answer.

That was enough.

Damian’s jaw tightened.

“How long have you known?”

“Three weeks.”

“Three weeks?”

His voice remained calm.

That made it more dangerous.

“You let her walk around this house knowing someone was hunting her?”

“I tried to protect her.”

“You failed.”

The words were quiet.

But Evelyn accepted them.

Because she knew he was right.

“Maya came to me after she found the archive file.”

Damian stepped closer.

“What file?”

“The one your father hid.”

“About my sister?”

Evelyn looked away.

“Yes.”

Damian felt anger rising.

Not the kind that made people lose control.

The kind that made him dangerous.

“Who is she?”

Evelyn hesitated.

“I don’t know.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I know what your father wanted me to know.”

Damian stared.

“And what was that?”

Evelyn swallowed.

“That your sister was alive.”

A long silence followed.

Then Damian looked at the photograph again.

The woman.

The baby.

The man standing beside them.

The man who looked exactly like his father.

Except younger.

Except impossible.

“Who is the man holding the baby?”

Evelyn’s face changed.

A small movement.

A tiny reaction.

But Damian saw it.

“You know him.”

“No.”

“Evelyn.”

She closed her eyes.

Then whispered:

“His name was Adrian.”

Damian froze.

Adrian Calloway.

The name felt familiar.

Not because he remembered him.

Because he had heard it before.

Hidden conversations.

Old arguments.

A name that disappeared whenever he entered the room as a child.

“Your father told everyone Adrian died before you were born.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“He lied.”

Damian walked away.

The truth was becoming impossible to process.

First, a sister.

Then a secret brother.

Now a man who had supposedly never existed.

His entire family history was collapsing.

His phone vibrated.

A message.

Unknown number.

A picture appeared.

Damian opened it.

It showed Maya.

Alive.

Sitting in a dark room.

Her hands tied.

But she was looking directly at the camera.

Below the picture was a message.

"She knows where your brother is."

Damian’s breathing changed.

Then another message arrived.

"Come alone."

Evelyn saw his face.

“What happened?”

Damian turned the phone toward her.

She looked at the image.

And immediately became pale.

“No.”

“What?”

“That place.”

“What place?”

Evelyn looked terrified.

“The old Calloway chapel.”

Damian frowned.

“The chapel was abandoned years ago.”

“Yes.”

“Then why are they there?”

Evelyn’s voice dropped.

“Because that’s where your father buried the truth.”

Damian grabbed his coat.

“I’m going.”

Evelyn stepped in front of him.

“No.”

He looked at her.

A warning.

A command.

But she didn’t move.

“You cannot go there alone.”

“The message said alone.”

“And whoever sent it wants you to believe that.”

Damian stared.

“Where is my security team?”

“Waiting downstairs.”

“Good.”

He walked past her.

“Then they stay here.”

Evelyn followed.

“Damian.”

He stopped.

“You need to understand something.”

“What?”

“Your father wasn’t protecting himself.”

Damian turned.

“He was protecting someone else.”

“Who?”

Evelyn looked toward the sleeping child upstairs.

And Damian immediately understood.

Not Lily.

Not Maya.

Someone older.

Someone connected to the night his father died.

Someone connected to every secret buried under the Calloway name.

Twenty minutes later, Damian arrived at the old chapel.

The building stood away from the main estate.

Forgotten.

Broken.

The place where generations of Calloways had held private ceremonies.

The place no one entered anymore.

The front door was already open.

Damian stepped inside.

The air smelled like dust and old wood.

His footsteps echoed.

“Maya?”

No answer.

He moved deeper.

Then he saw her.

She was sitting on a chair near the altar.

Alive.

Terrified.

But not alone.

A man stood behind her.

Older.

Gray hair.

Scar across his face.

Damian stopped.

Because he knew that face.

Not from memory.

From the photograph.

The man holding the baby.

The man everyone said never existed.

The man whose name had been erased.

The man looked at him and smiled sadly.

“Hello, Damian.”

Damian raised his weapon.

“Who are you?”

The man looked at Maya.

Then back at him.

“You already know.”

Damian’s finger tightened.

The man took one step forward.

“I’m the brother your father spent his entire life hiding.”

The chapel fell silent.

May you like

Then the man whispered:

“And I’m the reason your mother tried to kill me…”
