Chapter 6 - The Truth Massimo Never Told Her
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
The last sentence from Alessandra’s mother remained on the screen.
"Because Massimo Costa is the reason I disappeared."
Alessandra stared at the words.
She wanted to deny it.
She wanted Massimo to explain.
She wanted him to tell her that this was another lie created by the people hunting her.
But the worst part was not the message.
The worst part was his silence.
Massimo Costa had answers.
She could see it.
"You knew."
Her voice was quiet.
But everyone heard it.
Massimo looked at her.
"I knew your mother."
Alessandra felt her chest tighten.
"That’s not what I asked."
A long silence.
"Did you know she was alive?"
Massimo looked away.
That was enough.
The answer hurt more than she expected.
Leo shifted beside her.
Alessandra immediately picked him up.
She stepped back from Massimo.
The same man who had protected her minutes earlier suddenly felt like another person.
Someone she didn’t understand.
Someone who had saved her while hiding the biggest secret of her life.
"You knew."
She repeated.
Massimo lowered his voice.
"I thought she was dead."
"But you weren’t sure."
He didn’t answer.
Alessandra laughed quietly.
Not because anything was funny.
Because she couldn’t believe what was happening.
"My whole life, people kept deciding what I was allowed to know."
She looked around the room.
"My company."
"My family."
"Everyone."
Then she looked directly at Massimo.
"And now you."
Massimo accepted the anger.
He didn’t defend himself.
That made her even more frustrated.
"Tell me the truth."
The room waited.
Massimo finally spoke.
"Your mother wasn’t running from me."
Alessandra froze.
"Then why did she disappear?"
Massimo looked at the screen.
"Because she found out what File 07 really was."
Clara stepped forward.
"Massimo."
He ignored her.
For the first time, he looked ready to reveal everything.
"Eight years ago, my father built a private network."
Alessandra listened.
"Not a criminal organization."
"A protection system."
She frowned.
"For who?"
Massimo looked at the drive.
"For people powerful enough to erase their own crimes."
Daniel shook his head.
"You’re making it sound better than it was."
Massimo looked at him.
Daniel continued.
"They weren’t protecting innocent people."
The room became quiet.
"They were protecting the powerful."
Alessandra understood.
The missing money.
The fake accounts.
The hidden identities.
Everything connected.
Massimo continued.
"When Sofia discovered the truth, she tried to expose it."
Alessandra looked at the screen.
"My mother helped her."
Massimo nodded.
"They worked together."
"And then?"
Massimo’s face became colder.
"My father found out."
Nobody moved.
"What happened?"
Massimo looked down.
"I tried to get them out."
Alessandra stared.
"You tried?"
His eyes met hers.
"Yes."
A pause.
"But I failed."
Those words sounded heavier than anything else he had said.
Because Massimo Costa did not sound like a man who lost a fight.
He sounded like a man who had been carrying a defeat for years.
Alessandra looked at Leo.
Then back at him.
"And my mother?"
Massimo hesitated.
"She disappeared before they could find her."
Daniel interrupted.
"No."
Everyone looked at him.
Daniel shook his head.
"That’s not the whole truth."
Massimo’s expression changed.
"Careful."
Daniel stepped closer.
"You want to tell her you failed because you couldn’t save Sofia."
He pointed toward the screen.
"But you’re forgetting something."
Massimo stared.
Daniel continued.
"Sofia didn’t disappear because of your father."
A pause.
"She disappeared because she found out you were involved."
Alessandra looked at Massimo.
The room went silent.
"What does that mean?"
Massimo didn’t answer.
She stepped closer.
"Massimo."
His jaw tightened.
Finally, he spoke.
"My family controlled parts of the network."
Alessandra waited.
"And?"
"I helped them."
The words hit harder than she expected.
"You helped them?"
"Before I knew the truth."
Massimo’s voice was lower.
"I thought I was protecting people."
He looked at her.
"I was wrong."
Alessandra didn’t know what to say.
Because for the first time, she saw something she never expected.
Regret.
Real regret.
But regret did not erase secrets.
A loud sound interrupted them.
The security alarm.
Every light in the lounge turned red.
One of Massimo’s men rushed in.
"Boss."
Massimo turned.
"What happened?"
"The building cameras are down."
"How?"
The man looked nervous.
"Someone disabled them from inside."
Everyone became still.
Again.
Inside.
Not outside.
Not enemies at the door.
Someone already among them.
Massimo immediately looked around the room.
His eyes moved across every person.
Alessandra noticed.
He wasn’t looking for an enemy.
He was looking for betrayal.
Clara whispered:
"Someone knew we had File 07."
Daniel looked at the drive.
"And they know we opened it."
Massimo picked up the laptop.
The screen had changed.
The folder was gone.
The files disappeared.
Only one message remained.
YOU SHOULD HAVE LEFT THE PAST BURIED.
Alessandra looked at Massimo.
"Who can do this?"
Nobody answered.
Then the laptop made another sound.
A new file appeared.
No title.
No sender.
Only a timestamp.
Eight years ago.
Massimo opened it.
A video started.
This time, it wasn’t Sofia.
It wasn’t her mother.
It was Massimo himself.
Younger.
Standing inside an office.
Talking to someone.
Alessandra watched carefully.
Because the person standing across from him was familiar.
Too familiar.
Massimo’s face changed when he saw it.
"No..."
The younger version of Massimo turned toward the camera.
And the person beside him stepped into view.
Alessandra stopped breathing.
Because the person in the video was the one person she trusted most before everything collapsed.
The person who had helped her investigate the company.
The person who claimed to be protecting her.
The person who had brought her into this nightmare.
